When I watch your videos I always look at the locations mentioned from where the train originated, is going or the video location. Wirrida popped up and I found it on the map, interesting looking balloon loop. I followed the road east until the Stuart Highway and saw the 2 haul roads crossing under the highway and I knew exactly where that was as we had passed over those 2 haul roads on our way south from Darwin after our recent trip on The Ghan. When I get up to editing that part of my video I can now add some detail to the location. Following the haul road east I see it leads to Prominent Hill, we saw signs for that but didn't see any hill and was probably too far east. Anthony
In around about 1976 I worked in Signals and they began removing the old mechanical lever signal cabins and we did some service on the machine. They got replaced because "central train control" was being introduced. I think the Blackwood cabin got retained because it had one lever which allowed it ( the yard) to be remotely controlled . I know we removed the Mount Lofty signal cabin machine as the yard there got converted to electric switch machines.
Thanks again for some great shots and information. I was assuming this was a narrow gauge line but when you showed the empty mineral sands train from Perth, some doubts crept in. Is the ore train standard after all?🤔
Hi Matt top video mate ,I spent so much time on tent hill it’s not funny ,every time my mate came up from Coota I asked Gerry where we going he’d say you know where Tent Hill cheers Matt ❤️🙏😀😀👍
the passenger wagons are set up with sleeper rooms and lounges for off-duty drivers. the tanks contain fuel. there are long distances between towns so everything that is needed is on the trains.
G’day Matt, Great video & footage. Quick question so when the ore train running empty back to Darwin clears Spencer Junction is it running back to Darwin with the single loco up front ? Cheers Louis Kats 👍
@@louiskats5116 Thanks mate! Balloon Loops at the Port means the same single locomotive that leads the loaded down to Whyalla, leads the empty back to Spencer Junction. Then they swap back to the end with two locomotives for the run to Wirrida on the Darwin line where there’s another balloon loop which turns the train around back to run south with the same twin locomotives leading again.
Looking at all those containers often double stacked taking an almost uncountable number of trucks off the line. I can’t imagine why the Melbourne to Brisbane rail line won’t be a similar success.
Yes, we call it Inline Refuelling. It's meant to top up the locomotive tanks, as they used to. It doesn't always work that way, and sometimes crews have to turn on the pumps while stopped crossing opposing trains. Depending on weather conditions, those fuel pods can hold enough fuel to replenish the locomotive tanks for the whole journey there and back some 6,000 km in total. The carriage is crew accommodations allowing the same four-man crew to work 8 on, 8 off-hour shifts across the several day trips.
7-8 on average per day are scheduled with some ad-hoc services like grain also running. It varies, as Mondays only see 5, while Wednesdays and Fridays see 9.
Great work as usual Sir! I counted about 10,000 sleepers at Lofty , so there must be a big job coming up? I was concerned about the fence on the platform , but good to see they dropped it down along the front. Hope the coffee is good , as I'll be walking across a bit in the future..... Stay safe mate. Cheers Gregg.
Thanks, Gregg! I believe they're replacing all the sleepers from Belair to Mount Lofty through the National Park. There was also a Rail Train up the hills the other week doing some work, so it's good to see the line getting its deserved TLC. It was nice to see your block again. It will be great to get a coffee over at the station soon, too!
love all your content and watch to the end every time - Mount Lofty area, Cook and Wirrapa Curves are my favourite locations. Keep up the good work Best wishes from UK
As I watch from 11,000 miles away, I'm happy to see that my favorite train-spotting location in Australia isn't being torn down, and is being preserved.
Whats the middle track between the mainline and the loop there at Mt lofty? I thought it was for the running of the 2 standard gauge freighters rather than just one sitting in the loop ams one on the mainline there! Gr8 vid I love the ones that you do! Keep em up 💯 ☺️
I'm glad you enjoyed the video, mate. The middle track is a storage road for track machines and problem wagons/engines on the climb. Thanks for watching!
Yes, there are new "94" class, four have been completed, maybe five now, near two months ago but still sit at UGL and haven't been out on trials. Pacific National refusing to accept delivery? Meanwhile the RFAM "CF" class roll off production and pressed into trials straight away. Nice variety of trains in your video, well done.
I must agree with everyone else and say this is one of your best videos. I also hope the cafe is successful with lots of publicity. Well done for this excellent video 👏👍
I saw a sign on the side of a Pacific National loco that said "Real Trains, Not Road Trains." I agree with that sentiment. Let's build a more efficient freight rail system. Thanks for the great video.
