What I like to do when I'm shunting is use cards. I've made a deck of cards with one card representing each individual wagon or coach, and by shuffling the cards and laying them out in a certain order (and sometimes roll a dice to determine how many wagons to form a train) I'm able to randomize the wagons I want in a specific siding, which keeps the shunting layout both interesting and challenging.

I've been binge watching all your vids, abs getting into it all again and I even snagged a NOS Lima 33 tonite for a veritable song as I have several HO wagons and coaches. I have a fondness for the 33 as I spent many a summer holiday day in my uncles Hoo based 33 as we did duties to Ford, to the steel mill, to the glass mill, occasional run to Willesden or Hither Green in the old chuckler. Next on my list is some EMU, EPB, CEP, a shame no one does a reasonable cost Hasting's DEMU, oh my joy would be profound as my desired layout is the Bromley North Branch but I am thinking in OO scale that might be quite a challenge lol
@dodgydruid

I am waiting for Hornby to get back to me with some press pics of their annual exhibition train they used to drag into Bromley North for a week, 73's either end, spotters dream was the Hornby train.

People forget with models that old doesn't mean bad. Often the older models are much more robust and some are very well detailed! On eBay when they say a model is a 'bad runner' it just needs a clean and a bit of oil and it will be good as new.

Inspired by the Micro Layout I am having a go at one myself. I did like your original theme of a dockside with fish vans so that will be the theme for my layout. I haven't a name for it yet but maybe Brixham or some other similar location as there are no trains dockside at Brixham. I am struggling to get it all on a three foot board and it is more likely to be around 3' 5". I had enough track and points but am now sourcing some fish vans to compliment the parcel vans I have. I will bring out of mothballs an old Triang Dock Authority shunter which is a good slow runner. Keep the videos coming.

Sounds an epic plan. The new Hornby Bagnall shunter in green would also be excellent, have fun with it.

You make a good point about identifying which cars will run well on a particular layout. Also, i need to make sure particular cars will run well together. For example, i have a coach and a box wagon that do not like each other. But each couples just fine to the loco.

Very nice little layout you have there! It can be a lot of fun moving cars around between stations and industries. I know people with room for large layouts who have only an 18" x 96" switching layout, because that's what they like to do. Do an internet search for "John Allen Timesaver". That's a switching layout that can be a real puzzler!

The la,yout turned out sooo nice :D.. And i like how ur wagons and locos look.. They seem to be bigger than the austrian/german made trains.. Around here its blasphemie to not make them loom as realistic as possible.. I like the uk designs a bit more than our designs.. And finaly i got the right track for me.. The peco track, whoch is ultra hard to get in austria is the best choice for me because its the only track on the market which isolates sidings via turnouts.. Every other manufacturer makes turnouts which power both rails automatically... There is onl, 1 shop who sells peco in vienma xD but its the same price as in the uk.. Which is basically cheaper than in the uk in the end.. 15 gbp eqals 20€ but they only charge 15€... Lets hope they have everything on stock for my ngauge 3x2 box layout :)
@BudgetModelRailways

@@BudgetModelRailways the most important thing is to do things as you like to.. And not to please others. But that is something many people in our society don't understand. many people say.. Oh no, you are not doing it the right way.. YOU MUST buy märklin, you must buy fleischmann and so on.. I hate it.. I want to do it my way.. And if i fall, i fall. But i get up again and try something different the next time.. Around here.. Nobody knows shunting layouts.. But i already started a new series on my channel and i will introduce these layouts in austria and Germany.. And i will clear up some of the old and dusty opinions around model railways.. that it is expensive and only men in their 90s do it... It is time to make a ruckus and to stir up the ol dusty pond of modellers and bring in some new blood.. :)

It's the rarer OO version, I got it for £20 from Classic rail, it's a lovely runner

Thanks for the info. Were br 12 ton box vans and wooden 20 ton brake vans used frequently during the 1970's/era 7.

Honest answer, don't know for sure, I've seen pictures of them in use, but I don't really care too much, we just tend to run what we like

Not really, they take the coaches I want them too, and then the layout would have to be bigger, which defeats the objective of seeing how much I could fit into the smallest practical space. It's not supposed to reflect an actual station, it's a different approach.
