The Cherokee Tan Pumpkin is a long term survival food that we have grown for several years. These small personal size pumpkins have a one year shelf life when harvested and stored properly. Our line of Cherokee Tan Pumpkins came from a Cherokee elder. These have been handed down for many generations.

Thanks for that bit of history on the Cherokee Tan pumpkins! I'm part Cherokee Indian from North Carolina. Traced my ancestry years ago to find that my grandfathers people claimed to be FARMERS on the census to get out of being sent to the Oklahoma Cherokee Nation. By doing this, they relinquished their Cherokee heritage but were saved from the Trail of Tears journey. It is disappointing not to be able to LEGALLY claim my Cherokee heritage but in my heart I know that I am and that is all that matters to me. My Cherokee Tan pumpkins have gone slap crazy and have taken over the woodline by my garden area. They are growing up the trees, all over brush piles but have also crept up into my garden area to the point I can't get to several of my raised beds without stepping all over vines. I know one vine is over 200 ft long and is almost up to my pots of tomatoes & bell peppers up by my greenhouse. People are amazed at how this pumpkin vine has taken over, almost like kudzu!! I have seen several of the round balls with blooms so I know I will have pumpkins, if I can follow all the vines in the woods to harvest them. LOL!! I planted 4 seeds and they all sprouted and made vines so I am hoping to be very blessed with a nice pumpkin harvest. QUESTION: How would you save the seeds to plant for next year? Do you let one get really ripe and harvest those seeds or can you save the seeds from any of the pumpkins? I'm not wanting to sell them but have plenty for next year and to give to family.

Thank you for showing us the whole vine Danny. Mine tried to come back after the grasshoppers got them a few weeks ago so I can tell they are very hardy but there isn’t time for them to produce anything this year. So I got more seeds from you and will try again next year. Loved hearing about the history. I’m really praying I can grow these successfully and want to have a area in my garden dedicated to my Cherokee great grandparents. I think I found my great great grandfather on the Dawes list a few weeks ago. They were in Oklahoma and my great grandmother lived in Joplin MO after she grew up and got married. The records only go back as far as her father and his siblings and parents. Wish I could find out more but for now I will try and grow the Trail of Tears, the Cherokee Tans and the Danny Corn together. Looking very forward to that coming to life next year.

I was hoping for a dedicated video on Cherokee Tan Pumpkin. Got my seeds from you. Early on when the vines were less than 10 ft I picked them up to cut the grass underneath, I didn’t know about the roots along the vine and they stopped blooming for 2-3 weeks, thought I ruined the plant. I didn’t disturb them again and they finally started to produce flowers again. There are at least 4 pumpkins so far. Thank You.

In my small garden I plant chives, different varieties of onions, leeks, marigolds and onion chives. A lot of little bugs do not like these, neither do the rabbits. You can add garlic to that list. You can plant the root portions of green onions, they too come back in the spring. If you get tiny onions to plant at the nursery, they also are said to overwinter. Might look a little dry by now, so you might get a good deal. You can always mulch plants a little, before it gets mighty cold. Plant garlic cloves root side down, a thump deep and a handspan apart, around the time when frost starts happening. They develop a root system over the winter, that's the best way to do it. Or right away in the earliest spring if you missed that opportunity. ❤ Happy gardening to all, everyone and everywhere. ❤ Even with a few occasional challenges, or setbacks.

If the bugs are getting in from the bottom I've put a small board or paving brick under them. Get them off the ground. I have problems with the grubs chewing into the bottoms of my squash. I also run my squashes up fencing. Those cattle panels tend to really hold the weight for me but I only grow smaller squash like honey nut and buttercup and after seeing the ones Danny is growing would be good on a fence.

They quite big already and I'm hoping for a long warm fall since it's in a somewhat sheltered spot I've already decided to cover with frost cloth if it's only one or 2 cool nights in the hopes of stretching my season. @@rodneysnextchapter615 the dry beans look like black kidney beans but a bit smaller and they cook up a deep brown. We use them for chili beans and in the mixed bean soup. The plants are beautiful too. The bean pods turn a rich ruby red as they age. They are good for greenbeans but i like the rattlesnakes pole beans a bit better flavor wise so the Trail of Tears end up for dry beans. I only grew out about 10 vines this year to refresh my seed stock as I had quite a few left from last year and needed to refresh several other pole bean seeds. Im kinda a seed hoarder! 🤫 I have the Anasazi beans out there too. But one of my other soup bean favorites just didn't grow this year so I'll have to see if I can find more stock. The Speckled Cranberry pole bean makes wonderful fat creamy beans i hadnt grown it in years due to losing the seeds. I might try planting out all the rest of the seex left and cross fingers next year. The worst thing is running out of garden space.

Going to try some of your Cherokee Tan seeds this year. I want to save some seeds from this crop for next year, but I want to be sure to keep them pure. I understand that Cherokee Tans and butternut squash are related closely enough to cross-pollinate. How far apart do they need to be to prevent cross-pollination?

Ok im convinced the long thing that was supposed to be a squash called aomething like " trombone" squash seeds are actually these...or seminole. ..im saving one for seeds...but its a pretty plant and does produce a lot of fruit...but it isnt long by any imagination. Swash vine borers which i have a lot of...dont bother it at all. So.strange to get this instead of what i ordered as the packet even had a picture of that trombone squash on it! And all i get is round small green things...

Thanks for the video. I hope you can answer a question I have. Do you know why a pumpkin plants female flowers will bloom but the male flowers stay closed? This is what my plant is doing right now. 😩

Question-- so do you harvest these individually as they ripen or wait and harvest them all at once ? Also, is it better to cure them before eating?

We planted a garden for the first time this spring. My first planting of summer squash did well. But in July I planted a second round of summer squash and a first planting of winter squash including pumpkins, cushaw, butternut, spaghetti and acorn squash. And also Hubbard squash. Then came the powdery mildew and squash vine borers. I lost all of the plants. The borers were even in the blossoms and fruit. Please tell me what I can do to prevent another infestation.

Pick the male flower off then pull the petals off exposing the male center and rub it all over the inside of the female flower.

I have some of your seeds growing in Washington State, and they are full size, but still green. How much time do they need to turn tan? I'm worried the cold will set in. They mature much slower than my small sugar pumpkins, which are ready to pick.

As a citizen of the Cherokee Nation and a cultural director of the tribe, I can assure you this is NOT ACCURATE. The heirloom seeds cultivated and available to the Cherokee citizens are FREE OF CHARGE! This has been reported to the authorities.

We are not representing the Cherokee nation. We are simply trying to get these seeds out there. We received them from a friend who got them and gave us the history on them as was given to him. We now have several seed companies selling these to help get them back in circulation. This is done to be a blessing to the people.
