I love pumpkins. They were the first plant that showed me I could garden. (Notorious black thumb) I opened a pumpkin to process and it was sprouting, so I planted them and they grew! Gave me the confidence to build a garden this year, so pumpkins have a special place in my heart. Thank you for all the new information!
Out of all the pumpkin videos that exist on the internet this is the only creator that thought to talk about actual pumpkin vine and plant care. Thank you so much.
I always make homemade pumpkin pies for Thanksgiving and this year my number one garden goal is to grow my own pie pumpkins! This year I finally have the space to grow them myself, and I saved some seeds from the pumpkins I used last year. They're doing good so far so I hope they continue to thrive! Thanks for these great tips!
Can you make a follow up video on caring for the vertical pumpkins? I just created a new garden bed and want to grow pumpkins up a cattle panel but I’m nervous about how to support the fruit.
I love that second pumpkin you showed that puts all the fruit in the center! That is a great variety for my garden since I have limited space and don’t want pumpkin vines taking over my entire yard. Thanks for all the information!
I’ve ordered about 25 different varieties of pumpkin and gourds for this year… I have a question, as I usually used to buy started plants… some of the pumpkin seeds I ordered have like a green coating on them, most do not. What is that all about? I haven’t seen it on any other kinds of vegetable or melon seed I got
Good information, but could have used fertilization methods. Are they heavy feeders? Use higher amounts of potassium, etc. Those plants are so green and healthy looking! My first time growing pumpkins and I’m just guessing. Thanks, from Georgia.
If you have good soil you might be fine since it's the first year growing there. They are heavy feeders, though, and you want to fertilize regularly. What nutrients you emphasize depends on the stage of the plant too.
Another great video! So much information - our pumpkins are growing in partial sun so I'll find a new location for the next round I plant. Thanks so much for all you do for us small urban farmers!
Oh wow this is inspiring me to try growing pumpkin in my small backyard! Is it too late to plant now (mid June) in zone 10a? Thank you for all these informative videos!
I’m growing Jack Be Little pumpkins up a trellis and it’s going great but those pumpkins are basically the size of a beefsteak tomato so weight isn’t an issue lol I’m also growing birdhouse gourds up a trellis… I may need to come up with some kind of sling for those.
Thanks you for the great tips on growing pumpkins. Last year we grew some pumpkins but it did go kind of crazy in a small part of my garden. This year I think I will do better. At least to manage them better.
I grow Connecticut Field pumpkins every year to give away to the neighborhood kids for carving. They are very productive and uniform and make perfect Jack O Lanterns. I also usually try to grow at least one large pumpkin variety (usually Big Max) but this year I am trying a variety called Atlantic Giant which supposedly can produce pumpkins up to 150 lbs. My biggest pumpkin so far is 52 lbs. and my goal is to break 70 lbs. this year. Lots of good tips in this video, especially about manual pollination. Thanks for the great content!

Hello, I put up my first ever cattle panel this spring and planted a zucchini on one side and a small watermelon on the other. So far so good. I am alittle worried about this summer heat this year though. Today I added some shade cloth but I put it right on the panel and I'm wondering how the plant will go up the panel if it can't grip it. We shall see. I would love to try pumpkins next spring. Great tips, Thank you!
Use plant clips if it seems like it needs help. If the fruit is getting big, you can also make a hammock for it. You can use an old shirt, pantyhose, etc.
I'm growing pumpkins for the second time in my life, the first time was an old pumpkin I threw on a brush pile one fall and forgot about until late summer when they were everywhere. I guess I didn't grow them at all, they grew themselves. 😂
Your videos are so helpful and inspiring, and i LOVE all the seeds we've ordered from you! Now i hafta order some pumpkin seeds, cuz before this i was afraid i'd have to sacrifice so much space, but now thanks to you, i know better!
I’m growing pumpkin in container up a trellis. It’s my first time. I applied some bone meal but how often should I fertilize with bone meal or is this a one time treatment and I need to add in another type of fertilizer through the season? Your videos are e amazing and give me confidence to try. In in San Diego. 😊
I love making pumpkin spice cakes. I love this video because it tells me tips and tricks to look out for when growing pumpkins. I just got pumpkin seeds in the mail today and I cannot wait to plant them! ❤ 😊
Beautiful plants!! I had no idea their leaves got so big! We love eating pumpkin. Can't wait to explore some fun varieties and start growing them myself!
They should be fine, but there is definitely less air flow and more contact with soil. You don't want leaves in the dirt, and drip irrigation helps too.
Excellent video and pumpkin tutorial. I have never grown pumpkins because I thought I didn’t have the room. But the sturdy trellis is a great idea. Thank you.
Great video! A follow-up to this comment…How many pumpkins were planted on that one trellis? I’m going to be growing on it horizontally on a 8’x4’ cattle panel and not doing an arch. Would it be best to plant one on either end and have them meet in the middle? Thank you!!
I love your seeds and your channel…. But can you please ask your camera person to stop moving in and out. I’ve had to stop watching your videos because they make me queasy.
Saya sangat tertarik untuk menanam labu dan video anda sungguh berguna untuk dipraktek'kan tapi sayang dinegaraku saya blm pernah menemukan tanaman labu dgn yg seperti anda tanam seandainya saya bisa mendapatkan benih seperti yg anda tanam saya akan sangat senang sekali..
Ooh .. need to start .. 🎃… I’m in zone 10b as well but east coast.. and still got powdery mildew in my zinnias.. after a storm.. and continued rains.. what should I do for this if this happens to squashes??
Since first time I ate pumkin dessert, and then first time I held a giant pumpkin I fell in live with this amazing vegetable. Thank you very much for this important info you provide to us. And thanks in advance for the seeds. ;-) Regards from Canada.
If the pumpkins are turning out really small when they turn orange, is this maybe caused by a mineral deficiency to cause the size to not get to where it should be? Is there something you should do in the fertilizer to supplement this and how do you know which one?
Do pumpkins grow additional roots at the nodes if in contact with soil? Just moved some vines out of my walkway & I noticed what appeared to be roots forming under the node where the vine splits
so if you had powder mildew on your plants and when you go and pull up the plants do you need to do anything to the soil after plants are gone? didn’t know if it would affect what your wanting to plant next? thanks, trying to learn❤️christy from va
Very informative video. I am glad that you emphasized not to water on the leaves to prevent powdery mildew infection. For sure that is the reason for getting powdery mildew on my pumpkin leaves because in my village we used to grow pumpkin, pole beans, cucumber, ridge gourd, snake gourd and never had powdery mildew because they were grown on top of a horizontal (flat) trellis 6 ft above ground, and watering was done around the stem on the ground, which is very well stressed in your video here. Thank you very much for good video content. Thanks for your time and sharing it. I liked your video.
Love them pants!! Can't hide in a pumpkin patch with those on! :) Great info! I am so excited that I found a local company with organic seeds! No more buying them from up north!
This is an URGENT request for help /advice.... I have bred and developed a brand of pumpkin, that I don't believe has ever been catagorized before. Example :- maximum spread is approximately 1 Meter square, Maximum yield 12 to 15 x 1kg pumpkins per plant. Skin orange (fairly soft) Flesh orange 300 + seeds per pumpkin. I have searched the Internet for a similar variety, but as yet, have been unable to find anything similar. I would appreciate advise as to weather or not, I have bred something "unique"?
What kind are you growing? If it's any that we have or similar, all the info you need including spacing is on our seed packs and our website: sandiegoseedcompany.com/product-category/vegetables/pumpkins/
Good advice on growing pumpkins. If you do another video on pumpkin you might explain to newbies how to tell the male flower from the female. The pumpkin plants looked nice and healthy For lots of pie.
Do pumpkins **really** need a full 6 hours of sun a day? I'm worried about the spot I have picked out for mine. Also, how much space would about 7 plants take up? (It's like, half are jack-o-lantern and half are small sugar pumpkins.)
Also, about how many pumpkins do you usually get per individual plant? I may not actually need all seven. I don't really *need* pumpkin anyway, but I like them lol.
It's best, but less sun will just mean slower development. Plants can sprawl quite a bit, especially if you don't prune them. Plants can produce several (or even a dozen) fruit per plant.
We had volunteer pumpkins grow the last two years from my kids using there Halloween pumpkins as target practice with their Bebe gun and pellet gun. We love them they are the tiny kind
