As we prepare for our upcoming Carryology collaboration, bag designers Alec & Taylor take a look back at the original Muir Project backpack.
They delve into every detail - discussing what worked, and what didn't - in a bid to learn from the past and make their next collaboration the best one yet.

I just needed it to be bigger, for me. The format works for most folks, and my life isn’t for most folks. So I realize that my perfect pack prob won’t be mass produced, but that’s really the only reason I didn’t keep using my Muir. Also- I actually really love the Trakke sternum strap. It fits me perfectly- I guess not for other folks? Thanks for doing all this, it’s super fun!

I think you covered the key points. It was a great pack, but it was fiddly. I also found with the bottle holders being used, it sort of compressed the lower part of the pack which meant I had to put my big packing cubes at the top, which blocked the little bits at the bottom of the pack. The sling is really cool, but if you filled that up without filling the pack it made the lid too top heavy and wasnt easy to use. Agree the magnets / fid lock system could have been better but aware of the limitations. The front pocket also became quite limiting / hard to use if the pack was full in the main compartment, so could use some more ‘outward’ space. Ultimately I ended up returning to using a DIY 1.5pack solution - being the Hoy with the Gingha sling (which effectively became the new Storr - albeit the new storr is of course more integrated than this DIY solution!). Whilst I like the ecopak, I think I do prefer the Trakke heritage waxed canvas. I found it more waterproof and versatile and classic looking. So a muir III upgrade closer to a Storr style 1.5 pack solution would be something very cool! Will keep eyes on the lookout for the Muir III updates! 👀

I really hope the interior is not ecopak, that was one of my peeves.

Would like to have a bairn pro that fits a 16” macbook pro and sometimes a 32oz water bottle on the side or in the main compartment.

I use the bairn pro with my 16” MBP, tight but fits fine.

@@Misterion25 Mine loosened up after a few days. Fits my 12" MBP perfect now. I also carry a 32oz water bottle in the main compartment.

@@stevencook1288 12" - that would probably fit in the regular bairn. 12" in the pro is like hotdog down a hallway loose.
