In Star Trek: The Next Generation, they allowed the crew to choose to wear either the traditional uniform or the uniform that looked like a short dress, at least in the early seasons. Even towards the end, they had "dress uniforms" which were also essentially dresses. The only person who ever says anything about it is Worf, who is immediately shot down by RIker . So the essential idea is that in that era, clothing is no longer gendered. There's also a theory that several characters from the Star Trek franchise could have been trans, but it's so much of a non issue by then that it never really comes up. I could imagine 7 Of 9 being trans. Imagine she's a young trans girl who's only just started living as her true self, only to have her entire personality taken away by the Borg. Maybe that's why she dresses in such a way to show off her femininity for most of her time on Voyager. She's making up for lost time. I also find it amusing to think of Kirk as a transman. Mostly because I know it'd really piss Shatner off. But it could explain a lot about him. His macho bravado could be a way of compensating for the fact that he was raised as a girl.

Interesting and engaging topic. I also would respond to your comments regarding holding the door open for another person. My parents taught me to hold the door for anyone following, whether you know them or not, whether female or male, regardless of age. I'm 72 and walk with crutches and have had many people hold open the door for me, including a young person with purple hair in a Mohawk style to which I responded "thank you". Simple courtesy. And, years ago, my son held the door for a woman behind him and she yelled at him for several minutes because she "could open the door herself and didn't need his help. He was stunned, but still holds the door for anyone as he was taught to do. Congratulations on another fine video.

When nikkie tutorials came out as trans she painted an interesting story of somebody who didn't owe the world an explanation of her transition because her transition was already over by the time she flourished in her career. i think at the end of the day trans is just a label that can be helpful and help someone feel less alone and help them get the resources and support they need on their journey to self-actualization, which is vastly different for every individual. i think it's up to every individual whether they want to continue to refer to themselves as trans or not, but I think many trans people want to continue to advocate for the safety and rights of people who have not come out yet, so they tend to want to build a healthy open community. Maya also brought up a point that if a trans person is dating somebody new, they might be at risk of discrimination or even violence if they are perceived to be deceiving somebody. there is a lot of internalized transphobia in society so in any situation a trans person has to decide whether it's safer for them to disclose that they are trans, or safer to not touch that subject and walk away... I can't imagine how scary it must be at times. I want to live in a world where it is safe for everybody to be who they are :(

Such a great video, and Maya, I love how these things are not offensive to you.That says a lot about your character. The meme that I thought was interesting was the one with the four squares, pink hair and oranges in the green bra. I think what the community is saying here is that it’s hypocritical for anyone to expect society to accept them when they don’t accept themselves. The character didn’t like his body so he changed it but then was frustrated that the rest of the world wasn’t accepting the alterations they made and I think personally with the issue here is that we could find great joy in allowing people to express themselves however they choose. If someone isn’t comfortable in their own body why should it matter to us? If everyone would just love each other for who we are deep down, everyone would be more able to accept themselves regardless of the external. I’ll see you for who you truly are, and you are amazing and beautiful and I also love how you are working towards making your exterior match your interior. You are absolutely beautiful and courageous and I’m so deeply grateful for your generous offering of yourself to the world through your videos. It is transforming, no pun intended. 💕🙏🏻🌻

I really appreciate this video Maya. It would seem we are either pathetic figures to be satirized & mocked (i.e. just a 'joke'), or a bunch of pushy, arrogant trans people who want to force our 'lifestyle choice' down the cis world's throat! It's a sort of "blaming the victim" rhetorical strategy. It chooses to ignore the reality of transgender people as largely the victims of transphobic hate and violence, even murder. The truth of transphobic discrimination in the workplace and other institutional settings is thus minimalized. How convenient! The reality of having to struggle for basic recognition of our humanity and worth can thus be dismissed. Just as intriguing, as you point out, is the phenomenon of cismen who are secretly attracted to us and can't admit it to themselves, or feel threatened by society's view of themselves if they do, as somehow less of a man. Sad. Thank god you found someone like Igor! You inspire me every day Maya! Thank you so much. I really respect your courage.

8:38 I actually think the reason showing people as trans is kind of a new concept is to avoid making us look bad... like they only seem to think of the sterotypes and dont realize we go from valley girl to a tomboy farmer and we act like everyone else and I think they want us to stand out but they dont know how to do that without making a mockery of us so its just easier to show us at the end of transition not standing out at all.

No not in a bad way, but sci fi better technology no issues with androgyn system during fetal development or outright having the tools to scientifically test people as they are born and transitioning them there and then... also its not like editing DNA etc is impossible, we do it now. It's kinda uncomfortable to think about because everyone says they don't choose it(i know i didn't choose to be gay either) and we can all yell about how we're proud... but its be a hell of a lot easier if we didn't exist. But in your case, looking into your eyes reminds me of watching the sun rise over the ocean in Florida. (I live in Florida). Absolutely stunning. You're the only one I have ever seen pull off this look successfully.

Yes, Maya, on estrogen the prostate gland does shrink. Prior to HRT my postage gland was enlarged, not cancerous, and I basically had to pee every 45 minutes because the enlarged prostate was not allowing my bladder to fully empty. Thank god for estrogen because now I can go four to six hours without having to pee.

I just wanna comment on something you said at the end: trans people actually have not always been ridiculed and discriminated against! Transphobia is a shockingly recent thing. In fact, most cultures revered their gender nonconforming people-they were often believed to have a special connection to spirituality and things like that. I highly recommend people (especially other trans people!) read Transgender Warriors by Leslie Feinberg. It didn't used to be so hard to be a trans person.

I feel like many transphobic people either have and attraction to transgender or are confused about their own gender and afraid of how their friends and family would react; so much so that they go overboard with their reaction to a transgender person. You be you as everyone should be able too. People have the right to be who they are and they shouldn't be judged. @Maya Henry, I've been following your channel for a few years now, it's always great to see new videos, you look amazing and I hope your recovery is going well😊 I just wanted to add something of an informative comment, just for information purposes; as Transwomen we are still susceptible to prostate cancer, but the risk drops dramatically, in the antipode of; we are more at risk from breast cancer than we might've been before, but it's still very percentile...so in short; risk of prostate cancer goes down...risk of breast cancer goes up, but not enough to really be concerning. Keep doing what you're doing and much love from the other side of the pond 😘

Trans memes are hateful, hurtful and dangerous. Many may be couched in humor... but so are racial jokes. Such things give power to such hate... and air of legitimacy in reinforcing stereotypes in the widespread "acceptability" of the seemingly softer ones. We are an easy enough target without ignorant and hateful people making our world more dangerous by such things as racism, genderism(?), sexism, any-ism. GRRrrrr...
@ebogar42
@ebogar42 3 года назад
Is it really genderism though if we take a scientific approach and not a hate approach and just don't buy it? How does someone hate a gender or fear it? lol Makes no sense. I just think it's funny people think they're born a different gender, and now it's like 60 genders and no real evidence but a few studies with no peer reviews. I didn't take science in college to be against anything. I just like hard evidence before deciding something. I don't believe in God either, but it doesn't mean I don't have an open mind that someday someone might prove me wrong.

@ebogar42
@ebogar42 3 года назад
@@bubcat54 From what I've seen it doesn't follow scientific theory and is just a guess. It doesn't have any peer studies. I don't ignore science. I'm just not convinced yet. I keep an open mind about being proven wrong, but that doesn't mean I have to agree just so you won't demoralize me and call me transphobic when I'm not. There is nothing scary about you or anyone else thinking they're something they might be or might not be. I honestly don't even care. We all question who we are at times. It's not even a big deal. You all try to make it seem like one though. I'll give you one example of why I'm not falling in line. Even after surgery Trans people aren't happy and have a very high suicide rate. Lots want to change back after surgery too and don't feel they're the opposite sex anymore, but you don't talk about those people. Lots of guys act feminine but don't feel they're trans. There are all different types of personalities, likes, and everything in between, but I don't get how that makes you different than the sex you're born with. What does it even feel like to be a man or a woman without using gender roles? That's another problem I have. There is no right or wrong way to be a man or a woman. Gender roles that are a society construct don't prove anything either. I've never wondered if I were male or female. I just know I have a dick and I like pussy. You can label me what you want and that doesn't change that at all. Everyone is trying to make it so complicated now though. 60 different genders is ridiculous when there is only two sexes. Why can't it be two sexes and genders and 60 different types of females and males that are on a spectrum of different likes, wants, desires, sexuality, goals, etc. Why obsess over if you're a man or a woman or something in between? To me if you're obsessing about it, there is a lot of stuff mentally going on. I know about obsessive thoughts. I've had them my whole life. I'm a bit of a hypochondriac too. I'm always thinking shit that's only in my mind and getting tons of anxiety and depression because of it. The mind can easily play tricks on you. I sometimes wonder if I'm a sociopath. I have all the traits, but I'm also not certain. I sometimes tell people I'm one joking but it doesn't mean I'm right. I've also went through trauma, deep depression, panic attacks, and I might just be fucked up chemically and throwing everything off. The last couple years have been better and I don't really feel like that as much anymore.
