In this video I explore Transactional Analysis ego states in the treatment of depression. I explain how depression is frequently caused by dominant Critical Parent and Adapted Child ego states. By contrast the Nurturing Parent, Adult and Free Child and often weak. I explain what causes this ego states to become unbalanced and what to do about it. Using Transactional Analysis (TA) as the core model I also introduce Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT).

Thank you for the tips on how to strengthen the neglected, underused ego states. As someone who is learning about the goals of TA, what are the easy-to-understand meanings of Spontaneity, Autonomy and Intimacy? I’ll do a search for this in case you’ve already covered this. Thx again.
@LewisPsychology
@LewisPsychology Год назад
Thanks for your question Darren. Berne described autonomy as being script free. It also comprises awareness, spontaneity and intimacy. Awareness is the ability to assess a situation for what it is in the here and now using your Adult ego state.Spontaneity is about being able to do the things that really excite you in life without being held back by history. Intimacy is about being in game free relationships. Best wishes, Teresa.

When we can connect to each other from an authentic place, having already full cups, and looking to enrich, not deplete each others lives, we can form functional and healthy connections with others. When we feel safe to communicate from a vulnerable position that we will be understood this allows for intimacy, it is a prerequisite for intimacy intimacy is safe and vulnerable sharing, conscious relationships share these traits. Healed individuals working together in life not against each other. These ideals help us empower and gain sovereignty-It’s developing emotional intelligence and setting healthy boundaries. Much love

I love your content because you are actually suggesting ways to work through our inner thought processes using theoretical models. Some of us cannot afford a therapist at the moment so this is very helpful, thank you. As an adopted child with a distant mother who had her own biological child, I needed to separate and find my own identity and autonomy and recognize my inner dialogue to heal.

I saw your comment and as an adoptee myself can identify too well . My adopted mother was quite distant also and I believe quite depressed and my adopted father was often bad tempered and angry . Separation from our birth mother is huge trauma in itself and the absence of safe secure attachment is yet further trauma . I sincerely hope we can make improvements with this kind of education and help ,with best wishes ,Nick .

Thank you from the bottom of my heart for your incredible work with these videos. In the space of 30 minutes, I have watched 3 of your videos and have learned a lot about where my behaviours are coming from. I am in Therapy at the moment and we have been using the Ego States in those sessions, but now I understand my biggest drivers too, and realise that a lot of how i behave comes from two of the 5 drivers! I am in awe of these revelations and you have motivated me to make a difference to my life and change it for the better. Thank you again!

We can look at the dualistic nature of both extremes related to each ego state. Middle ground is the best approach and that is literally what spirituality represents. Human evolution and awareness into unconscious behaviors. We are healing trauma people, I’m proud of you

Hi thank you for a very informative video on TA. As a CBT therapist im interested in what formulation you use in TA please?
@LewisPsychology
@LewisPsychology 5 месяцев назад
CBT and TA and two very different approaches and the approach to formulation is also different. We can formulate in TA by using ego states (as per this video), injunctions, drivers, script work etc. All my TA videos illustrate different ways we can formulate using TA. In reality we will be using all of these methods in an evolving formulation. You may find my video on the script matrix of interest. Best wishes, Teresa.

hello, I was never criticized as a child, I was very praised yet I have a very negative self talk. I have to add here that I was a perfect child and quite enmeshed with my mother. So how would you explain the harsh negative self talk? Thx
@LewisPsychology
@LewisPsychology Год назад
Hello Rya Rya. Thanks for your comment. A negative internal voice can be caused by many factors such as internalising the messages (verbal and non-verbal) from your father, a teacher, grandparent or other significant person in your life. It can also be caused by a dominate threat system due to trauma, abuse etc. The videos that I'm releasing over the next few weeks are about the messages (verbal and non-verbal) we receive from our parents and the unconscious decisions we make as a result. I think they should help. Best wishes, Teresa.

I've noticed a lot of children of a narcissistic parent growing up as "the perfect child" and enmeshed with that parent because they were brought up being used as a source of narcissistic supply. The narcissistic parent typically treated them as "extensions" of themselves and almost never encouraged the child to be/do/act/play/ outside of that narrative that was going to make them look good or 'the perfect parent'.. Don't know if this was your experience but these parents also tend to have the "scape goat child". So if you had a sibling your mother hated and blamed everything on, then there is a very good chance that's what you grew up with

I just don't understand TA. It sounds like a lot of Freud non-sense when I hear it. I know this isn't part of Freudian Psychology, but just the examples used seem so picture perfect that I can't see them in regular every day actions. I've had psychiatrists that seemed like adults, but then talked to me like amused children when they wanted to know about SA I experienced. I just can't wrap my head around using these concepts in a daily or benneficial manner. I guess it could be used in private like sitting at home and putting the days conversations into categories, but I can't see someone thinking about this "in the moment" as they say. Now, I have been learning about Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and the other one, Dialectal Behavior Therapy (I know I spelled that word wrong lol), and I understand that as something you practice at home, or you set aside time to practice, but the TA stuff I just can't understand. Everybody that talks about it acts like it's something you do during active listening whle IN the moment and my brain just isn't smart enough to process my ego state, their ego state, all the while wondering if someone is being friendly, combative, wanting to rob me, or wanting to help me lol. I just usually find myself, in any interaction, wondering about 20 billion things, that ego doesn't seem to come to mind. I just don't get it. I guess if this is something you are meant to practice? Something you are meant to do in your spare time, or you do with a friend, maybe significant other, I can sort of see that. Although someone practicing this sort of thing on their own could convince themselves of the wrong thing couldn't they? Mistake a certain conversation as part of the child ego instead of the adult ego? I guess people could convince themselves of many things lol. Anyway, it's just frustrating that I hear about this from people I know and they act like it's the most amazing thing ever, but I just don't understand it. I can't wrap my head around the concept's I guess? I'm not sure what makes understanding this so hard. I just see conversation as being more complex than ego states, or maybe not as complex as every sentence being an ego state? I'm confusing myself BLARG!!! I hate not understanding things lol. Your videos are great by the way. I stumbled on them today when I was going through websites on Bing looking up more info on TA. I saw one of them on the Bing video page and was brought here. You have a lot of good stuff on here. I just can't understand TA lol.

This is quite an advanced TA video aimed towards therapists so please don’t worry that you don’t understand. There are many different types of therapy and you may find one that your resonate with and another that your don’t, that’s totally fine. Best wishes, Teresa.
