This is the first in our Gunboat Atlantic Ocean crossing series. Shayne shares with us an insider's view into what crossing oceans is like for a professional Gunboat crew. These videos are a real treat as Shayne takes the time to share his experience sailing a Gunboat 68 from Antigua in the Caribbean to Toulon in France.

Hey thanks for explaining the mast rotation I’ve always struggled to understand exactly how to set that, though I sail hobie cats so I have to estimate the degree of rotation but now I have some knowledge to work off of.

How does the J0 furl with the fiber luff? Crazy sheeting position to be so close to the wheel - not sure I'd be super pleased with that. Was it a bit of an afterthought? I shall have to save my millions and get a GB68. Sailing fast in flat water is always the best. We used to pray for 10-12 knots on a passage though we sure didn't do windspeed. Our heavy mono friends wanted 20 knots+ to move their boat with the accompanying seastate. Fools!
@youngbarnacles
@youngbarnacles Год назад
Yes, the steering wheels were added after the initial design and it does mean the J0 sheet runs very close. Not ideal, but it works.

Curious why you leave daggers down while motoring in no breeze? Extra drag can’t help.

Whats your thoughts on hybrid propulsion? Hybrid to me seems like it would be the go, no engine noise, can recover power while sailing and use solar to get you going along. I'm sure it's not as simple as that, but interested why on a new boat these days people don't tick that option more often.. other than cost.
@robalex117
@robalex117 Год назад
I had a GB 60 with diesel electric otherwise commonly called a hybrid. Done right is is a great solution. Done wrong it is a rabbit hole that you wish you never went down. My system was designed in 2011 and when first installed did not work well. After many modifications, most importantly new electric motors they system achieved it potential. For a high performance catamaran that sails fast and sails more than it motors it is a great option. At 10 knots we could generator 4kw of power from each prop.
@vokstar
@vokstar Год назад
@@robalex117 I have seen a few hybrids that it seems like they have had to make modifications over the years. Do you know if there was/is a weight penalty? Obviously there are going to be discrepancies in weight in a traditional setup as they burn fuel, but if they are fully fuelled up it has to be reasonably close?
@youngbarnacles
@youngbarnacles Год назад
What 60 was that? We are looking at repowering and the hybrid is a good option. I designed a full electric boat in Australia around the same time as your hybrid. Like you w had the start of a good thing. After ironing out some details the boat went well.
@youngbarnacles
@youngbarnacles Год назад
@vok star it depends on where you set the goal posts. The energy density of diesel allows for crazy being tanks and fuel to give huge range. However most like us don't carry huge amounts of fuel. So the weight of the solar and battery with the huge reduction in weight of the actual motor you end up with potentially like for like weight. If managed well and the weather plays well, you are carrying your fuel station with you. But it is soooooo weather dependant!

If you still have wind pushing the sails you have dagger boards down. The better question to ask might be when do you bring dagger boards up. We'll put something together in a video and try to explain 👍

Has anyone figured out how to put aerodynamic flush-folding footpegs on the mast, all the way to the top so you can climb instead of being hauled up?

You don't need mast steps when you have a bunch of young apes on board who sell their souls to make a trip like this on a boat like this...I don't know if i have ever seen mast steps on a c/f mast.
@langalex
@langalex Год назад
so now the questions is: how does one become one of those apes?
@youngbarnacles
@youngbarnacles Год назад
They do have mast steps that fold away. They are located around the boom to give access to boom. There are also a few at the top of the rig for when you are working up there. They don't go all the way up the mast because 1) windage and 2) it's too big a section to climb up. It's massively wide so it's hard to climb and it's a loooong way up. You'd be knackered before you reach the top to do any work.
@searlearnold2867
@searlearnold2867 Год назад
@@youngbarnacles by windage, do you mean they would disturb the airflow meant for the sails and reduce efficiency?

200nm per day? Thats like 8 knots average, Which seems rather unremarkable for a gunboat. Do you maybe mean per 12? We did 3000 nm between Galapagos and marquesas and that took 17 days on a leopard 45. We averaged around 176 nm per day....
@youngbarnacles
@youngbarnacles 9 месяцев назад
The weather conditions make a HUGE difference to how many nautical miles you can do per day. The Gunboat 68 was doing 200nm days in sub 10kts.
