a nerd is someone who knows alot about random things. for example, a harry potter super fan could be referred to as a harry potter nerd because they know way more than they need to about harry potter. and the people who spend all of their time on the internet could be called nerds. youtube, tumblr, facebook nerd (spends all their time on youtube, tumblr, facebook.) Personally i use the term nerd as a term of endearment cause im a proud harry potter, youtube, tumblr, hunger games, internet nerd

pardon me if i am wrong, but don't americans speak ENGLISH... but they call english people "language" wrong? yet i do believe that english originated in england. quite silly, those americans are :P (no offense intended to any americans! it is supposed to be a silly sarcastic comment. i know i am not very good, lol)
@lovex3ism
@lovex3ism 12 лет назад
Luke you did an AWESOME job ! :) I totally agree how a lot of American language is shown through like television shows/music/literature over there in England. It's harder to learn the British language...the only way I learn is when I skype with my best friend or read Shakespeare haha bc. even British artists sing they sound totally American!
@treehopr
@treehopr 12 лет назад
He did a significantly better job choosing words. Half of yours aren't even applicable... Slang you just learned from hip-hop that's popular there too, acronyms, internet slang and a load of common words in English. Do you speak with real people or just media and the internet? Either or, your knowledge of English, American or British is terrible. This was a smack down indeed.
@lilacchocolate
@lilacchocolate 12 лет назад
Obviously Jim you don't watch the philip defranco show because he uses BAMF quite frequently and that's where I discovered what it is :P I'm confused because I left a comment answering your question Luke on Jim's video, and now commenting on yours for Jim, I'm assuming you guys are going to read both :P
@AwkwardHester
@AwkwardHester 12 лет назад
Okay I'm British and I knew all of those apart from the one you'd say if you like something (can't remember what it was) maybe I watch too much American tv :/ Oh and also, for our yearbooks we all had to do a little quote or something and I put DFTBA for mine, and none knew what it was, and people in my form were all like what does that mean? So I had to explain it.
@kokoshneta
@kokoshneta 11 лет назад
Wow. That is NOT what “I’m going to get reamed” means to me. Definitely not something you would EVER want to hear a kid saying with reference to their parents! 0_o (Am I a nerd, though, when my very first thought when he said ‘ream’ was: “500 sheets of paper!”?)
@notoriousLIZ
@notoriousLIZ 12 лет назад
these were WAY obvious. What about GTL, wack, jacked up, boo, shorty, grub, bent out of shape, paper, by the skin of your teeth, go dutch, hot mess, paint the town red, to do something "mickey "mouse", tight, dime-piece, dope, hella, major props, go ape sh*t...
@xsabrax
@xsabrax 12 лет назад
Even though its months later, i still love watching these types of videos! However, most of the words you used were almost exclusively californian or internet derived. Next time you should look into some southern or northern american slang. That would be way more fun. :)
@amsardina11
@amsardina11 12 лет назад
That's funny because it seems like British people are the ones who never swear. Go anywhere in America, especially on a freeway in traffic, and you wouldn't believe the things you hear. Nevada is hilariously cussy. People are so loud when they swear and they don't care who hears. LOL
@HillaryHorror
@HillaryHorror 12 лет назад
Lol well this is awful, but if I were to put it in a sentence it would go something like, "Man, last night I met this girl and she totally let me ream her out." You can probably infer from that example what that word means to me lol. I had no idea it had other, not so filthy meanings!
@Carcharien
@Carcharien 12 лет назад
lol, I first understood "creamed" and thought of something dirty, I apologize for that..... anyways, awesome vid, I actually learned a lot of new words, which maybe is not really surprising, because I'm german and my english still sucks, even after all this years....

I don't use a whole lot of these because I live in Pittsburgh, PA and we simply have our own language "Pittsburghese". It's pretty ridiculous lol, if I asked you what words we say meant you'd think I'm from a different country haha!

I used to live in NYC but live in LA now. People swear a lot more in NYC than here in LA. Lots of vulgar words are peppered in their daily speech. Yes, I've heard that people swear a lot in daily speech in the UK.

Hmm, maybe it's a regional thing? I've lived in the South for most of my life, so I'm more familiar with more country terms for that like... "getting your ass whupped" haha. Or even just "getting in trouble."

Just to clear things up (nerd alert) Kray isn't slang or even American....When they said "that sh*t Kray" They were talking about Robbie and Reggie Kray who were London crime lords from the 50's and 60's :)

haha ... I suddenly think of a HongKong-ish slang - Chok.. It is very difficult for people to guess the real meaning. Luke, can you try to guess? This is not a Chinese word anyway. It is a Hongkong-ish English word.
@IImoonifyII

That's not so much of an internet thing, more like a particular "community" of the internet... try searching for the Vlog Brothers (John and Hank Green), that's where it came from. You'll enjoy it.

I can't believe that Jim didn't know what YOLO was! All of a sudden it's hit our generation and become part of our everyday vocabulary, so much so that shops have printed them on vests and T-Shirts!!

Yes, they do say "prick" as an insult in the UK! Because in Skins series 1 when Chris is talking to his job coach and she keeps telling him not to swear, "prick" is the one that slips out.

I have learnt British English form the beginning, but we picked up a couple american words as well just to have more words to use. But since I watch a lot of American TV shows and read a lot of books from american writers I end up picking up more and more expressions. I read British English books as well, but not as many as american ones. By the way I´m already subscribed to Jim, he is really entertaining and gives good advice even if he always says it´s rubbish. :)
