Transcendental Etude No. 1 for the trumpet ("Gracefully")
Written in 2020, these (10) etudes are for the advanced trumpet player, each exercising a different musical style and/or trumpet-related concept. Written in a similar vein as Debussy and his piano etudes, these are a “warning to trumpeters to not take up the musical profession unless they have remarkable lips/fingers.” It is the composer’s hope that trumpet players everywhere will feel their playing and musicality transcend to a higher level after practice and execution of these etudes.

Love your tone some big and warm. Sooooooo much control. Hope I can get that good someday!

1:15 Love how the high notes have that tight, "guitar-string-lips" sound to them. Sounds amazing.

Lovely etude. A story of a tumultuous journey that ends with a quiet return home.

I’m a piano/guitar player so I really like having big fancy polyphony. I’ve never been so touched by a performance with only a single voice before (not to mention the composition). Seeing this video has been quite inspiring for me in that regard. Thank you and consider me subscribed!

Pedro Gregori I agree Robo, I’m considering transcribing this for piano, the fact that it’s already modal gives it a lot of potential. This and the Silvistrini oboe etudes.

@@ilikeplayingffftonecluster851 You can listen to all 10 of the trumpet transcendental etudes on his site www.brandonridenour.org/ Check them out! I'd also be interested in transcribing it so maybe we could split the load and work on them together. Although we wouldn't be able to share them due to copyright so idk.

I’m very malpracticed lately. Makes me wanna open that case again. Got me remembering what it felt like to play this type of music in college

You have to decide - do you want to be a former player, also known as a fan? Or can you answer, “Yes, I play.” You don’t have to be professional, but pop that case and pull the horn out. Vibrate the lips and move the fingers again. If you are lucky, you may find other people to play with.

Absolutely amazing. You make the jumps and technical parts look so easy! Definitely qualifies for “remarkable lips/fingers”.

It sounds so effortless for music that is very difficult in reality

To me it doesn’t sound so much effortless as it looks. The sound is relaxed but there’s a quiet intensity that underpins it’s round centered tone. The video of the performance at times looks incongruous with the demands of the etude. For example, I would expect to see a little more embouchure pressure in the face at bars 34-37. Great performance! Wonderful phrasing. Fun composition. Thank you.
