Wang Yangming (1472-1529) was a Chinese statesman, general, and Neo-Confucian philosopher. He was one of the leading critics of the orthodox Neo-Confucianism of Zhu Xi (1130-1200). Wang is perhaps best known for his doctrine of the “unity of knowing and acting,” which can be interpreted as a denial of the possibility of weakness of will.

Wow I didn't expect to see Wang Yangming here! I was introduced to his writings through Yukio Mishima when I was a teen. Very interesting stuff.

Wonderful! I actually just bought Mishima's Spring Snow to read in 2024. Would love any book recommendations you have.

@@philosophy_schilling Spring Snow is part of a tetralogy called the Sea of Fertility so if you enjoy Spring Snow I'd recommend reading the other 3 (Runaway Horses, The Temple of Dawn, The Decay of the Angel) The whole project is about 1,000 pages and it follows a timespan of over 60 years. I felt 60 years older after reading it lol. The Sea of Fertility tetralogy was Mishima's last contribution before committing ritual seppuku after trying to pull off a coup inspired by his own story in 1970. You could tell where his mind was at throughout the books. His own life and death was almost an extension of the series.
