Transfer files from PC to Amiga using a gotek drive and ADF disk images

In this weeks video I show you a method for transferring small files between windows and my A1200 using ADF disk images but no emulation.
ADF Opus is a fantastic tool that allows you to easily create ADF disk images so we use that to copy a few modules from the PC to the Amiga.

As I said in the video I can only really recommend this method for moving small files. If you need to move larger stuff or multiple files its still easier to pull the CF card and do it directly in winuae or buy a CF to PCMCIA adapter.

Informative Video Buddy I Usually go through Winuae and I happen to have a PCMCIA to Cf Adapter but it is a Pain when you only want to Put a Small File onto ADF

HI, thanks for the video. Will this procedure also work with hardfile ADF option in ADF Opus? just in case, I would like to transfer more than can fit on one floppy size? thx

Nice video. I'm running an amiga 600 with Furia. If i'm transferring large files (or a lot of files) I remove my IDE SD card and transfer via WinUAE. If its medium size files, i use my PCMCI slot with Cf card. If its smaller files (e.g. WHDLoad games) then I use a Null Modem Cable. if its very small files then I use my Plipbox via internet.

It also has a Batch Convert mode --- DMS or ADZ to .ADF or ADF/DMS to ADZ

Elite dangerous player love if I use gotek for Amiga 1200 to get mine to run I hold down both mouse buttons at boot to get in to menu then use boot if there is another way I don’t know of like to know thanks

Does the Gotek only support ADF files that are 880k or 1.4MB? What happens if you try to use a larger .ADF file?

You know its not something I've ever tried, not sure if it would be supported or not but might be worth trying. After a bit of googling I've found a few articles suggesting that the normal gotek firmware doesn't support HD adfs but there seems to be a few modified versions that do. I haven't tried any of it but if you do please let me know how you get on.

Thanks for the tip! :) You really read my mind because that's what I wanted is to load modules to protracker and play them and it worked! thank you so much! I have a question, How can I convert an image/picture to the amiga/adf file? I wanna paint over an md11 image on digi paint on the amiga but I tried using adf opus, but it loaded, but it looked very glitched out cause the pixles were everywhere. Can you help me with this problem? I'll give credit to you! :) If you want I can show you an example if you like.

If you take a look at my video on creating a wall paper for workbench it might help. Basically you want manipulate the image on your computer to suit the Amigas resolution and colour depth, you'll also need to increase the workbench colour depth. I'll be honest though and say I'm not that good with art on the Amiga. I'd recommend checking out Pixel Vixen on RU-vid as she is very knowledable with it.

You are limited to the size of an Amiga disk image so about 800kb

I have the new gotek, I think you can just copy the adf s to a usb (fat32 format), boot into workbench then plug in the usb and use the buttons or selector knob to the disk you want with out the selector program now. Correct me if I'm wrong. You don't need the IMAGE_A.CFG file. I'm also about to test if you can make a blank adf in Workbench, save it to the usb (DF0: in my case) that way you have blank disk/s on usb to copy files to. It might be just as easy to copy them from the PC. You'd have to name them blankdisk1, 2, 3 etc. Or empty or what ever. They have to have the dot .adf after the name for flash floppy to recognise them.

I tired this to drag over my whole samples directory but got this error: "could not copy file. there is insufficient free space on the destination drive"

You need to remember that you're working with Amiga disk images so maximum of 880KB per disk.

@@jaykay5486 You could use this software to create a new ADF then move some of the contents from an existing ADF over effectively splitting it. If you want to split larger files over multiple ADFs I'm not sure that can be done easily.

Most of the times, I just stick my Amiga harddisks in my linux computer through a USB card reader, and mount the Amiga FFS in read/write mode. No emulator of anything.

Yep that'll work, just like I would but using WinUAE. This method is still handy if you need to move small files and don't want the hassle of opening the machine to get the drive out. CF to PCMCIA adaptor is probably the best option overall, still need to get one of those though.

Where can you get a good SELECTOR.ADF file?

It is a surprisingly difficult thing to find online. Try this link - cortexamigafloppydrive.wordpress.com/ Scroll to the bottom of the page and there is a link to selector.adf, you need to right click and save as. I hope it works for you, I've since changed the firmware on my gotek so I don't use this file anymore.

Is there a way to copy a bunch of files to the thumbdrive, plug it into the gotek on Amiga and just copy them off that to the Amiga? IE use it as a storage drive not adf? For example, I want to make a thumbdrive that has ALL my system files, tools, utilities, programs etc on it from my primary Amiga I have a 32gb thumbdrive which is plenty of space. Using Winuae, I copied all the files I want to a thumbdrive, now I want to simply copy them to a clean new HD on the Amiga I setup... Do you know of any GOOD extensive instructions on actually using the Gotek on Amiga? I am basically trial and erroring it as I go... I can't find anything that actually tells you how to use the thing except for a basic one page thing from the company that makes it, in very generic form.

Unfortunately it cannot be used as you described. There are usb expansions available for the Amiga though that will allow you to use your thumbdrive for storage but they are expensive. Using the gotek itself is very simple. The thumbdrive must be fat formatted. Place your adf disk images with selector.adf in the root of the thumbdrive. Power on and select disk image 000. This will boot to the selector program. Select the images you want, press enter, select which disk image you want to place it on, press enter again. Once done press F10 to quit and reset.

don't know what I'm doing wrong but the transfer now says "could not copy file. There is insufficient free space on the destination volume" that's after watching you video 30 times and done every thing to the letter so to speak running windows 8.1

You need to remember that the Amiga disks your copying files to have a maximum capacity of just 880kb. It sounds like you've done everything correct it's just that the file size of what you're copying is too large.
