Hi there ~ So then if I want to transfer it onto a large canvas or heavy watercolor paper, do you rent an overhead projector? I know I have access to one through my local library ~ but is that how you would do it? I'm making a gift of a Homestead/Family Farm sign and it's going to be approximately 20" vertical x 52" horizontal.

I provided this video as just one example of what you can do to get a light starting point sketch with correct proportions before staring the shading and details phase. But my preferred method is using a grid, especially if I intend on enlarging the original. You don't want to bother with a lightbox for canvas or dense paper, or for enlarging. With that said, some do use projectors. I have never tried it myself.

Great vid! Thank you! By any chance do you have a suggestion in how to do a transfer on black paper?

Why do I get a "great video" but not a thumbs up? LOL! ;-) Use white transfer paper. Do a search and you will find it.

@@RixCanDoit wow, you're pretty rude.

@@Music1990Luver It really comes down to how you see text. If you look for the negative, you will find it. My comment was "tongue in cheek". I'm going to assume you are very young. Maybe I add a smiley face so as not to trip up the more sensitive among us. :-) :-)

@@RixCanDoit The way I read it, it did come off as rude. You could be right about what you're saying, I guess. I apologize, maybe I misread cause I felt bad for the person who asked the question even though it is old.

@@Music1990Luver No worries. It's good that you feel for others and I sure hope the OP didn't also take it the wrong way. That's how it goes sometimes with text comments. The kidding around can get messed up in translation. My reply to the OP was the correct answer to the question. "Use white transfer paper". This kind of paper contains the white backing needed to allow the image to show up on dark surfaces.

I have a question, in this case you used a regular printing paper. Would the light go through the same way if yo use a thicker drawing paper?
@RixCanDoit
@RixCanDoit 7 лет назад
No. The thicker the paper the less light gets through.
@ClariceAust

All you need to do is get some graphite paper and trace over your outlines onto a second, thicker piece of paper.

Can you use a canvas do trace on ?
@RixCanDoit
@RixCanDoit 4 месяца назад
Probably not. The light won't shine through. Canvas tracing is usually done via projector.

Something around 100lb Bristol Smooth. Once in awhile I might use 140lb cold-pressed cotton watercolor paper (Arches) but mostly the Bristol Smooth.

What about using Watercolor Paper that is NOT see through?
@RixCanDoit

Then the approach would be using a grid instead.
