The quest of saying "similarly" lol
Shonen anime have lots of tropes one of them being the transformation getting popular from dragon balls super saiyan. Goku transforming was one of the most iconic anime moments of all time so I figured why not see how this trope was used throughout shonen anime ~ Internet Pitstop

I don't like Dragonball Super for so many reasons just cause it made Super Saiyan even more of a joke transformation than something epic each character before kid Trunks and Gotten was warned during epic emotional moments.

Gon was so hopeful for kite being alive that he eventually genjutsu’d himself into thinking Kite could still be saved but Pitou broke that illusion and Gon couldn’t handle it. It really hits you when the other characters that are accepting of Kite’s death look at Gon with such concern when Gon says things about Kite still being alive. Before you find out about Kite’s eventual monster reborn mechanic lol.

Luffy's Gear 2nd will always be one of the most phenomenal transformations honestly. Wasn't just a transformation to get more powerful but the logic behind it was also great. Same case with his other gears. Though Oda wasn't afraid to make them look funny.

@@budyz4778 Armament Haki in the One Piece World isn't actually visible, the body parts getting black is just a visualization for us to see, but the characters in One Piece don't see that, for them it's invisible.

Completely agree on the super saiyan bargain sale point. Each transformation up till ssj2 made sense and was given to characters who earned it and the only one after that I thinks worked was ssjg.

@@brandito5480 That was his ssj2 transformation, his ssj1 transformation was vegeta taunting him and encouraging him to transform. I can agree that his ssj2 transformation was partially earned but there was next to no training for it like everyone else who became ssj2 did and also one part I forgot to mention was that each transformation up until ssj2 was tied to some sort of big emotional character moment, sure from Cabbas perspective shit was going down and I'm sure he was plenty emotional but it all felt empty compared to for instance Vegeta turning ssj1.

togashi loves subversion, I mean technically it gon isn't even his first reverse super saiyan moment, in yu yu hakusho when Yusuke loses control to Raizen he pretty much has a less dark parallel, Yusuke only awakens his demon blood due to dying and while him being reborn is still a mostly happy moment the loss of control to raizen shakes yusuke up mentally and really makes him realize how much stronger he can still become. Gon's transformation is still my favourite but it's clear to see how long togashi has been thinking about some of these concepts.

phenomenal video. mainly due to watching shonen the majority of my time watching anime (around a decade at this point) id say my absolute favorite are the bleach transformations. while Kubo may have a lack of story structure in essence of his writing, his ability to communicate interpersonal struggle and growth through a creative and artistic rendition in a character’s physical appearance and weapon used is just unmatched. The care put into the design is meticulous, and the weight/curiosity behind a character’s transformation is what drove many fans to continue the series after its narrative plateauing

Luffy's Gear 4 is generally more powerful than 2 and 3 but don't forget it has a time limit and he can't use Haki for 10 minutes afterwards.

Super saiyan 2 is just more aura means the hair will be spikier. For super saiyan 3, we know that the super saiyan transformation is the saiyan controlling the S-cells , basically goku is generating and awakening more Super cells which shows and extend toward his hair.

Idk if it counts since it's more of a seinen, but the stand arrows in Jojo are a really cool concept. The arrow will do one of two things depending on how it interacts with the user. If the arrow stabs the user, they gain a new ability for their stand but if it stabs the stand itself, it changes the stand to something entirely different. I always thought this was cool since it gave the characters a new option or even challenge in every encounter. The only problem is it's typically only been used in the finales so we don't ever really see the concept used to the fullest.

When i was a kid i didn't care about any story i was only there for Goku beating up bad guys and SSJ3 when it got first introduced was honestly one of the most epic moments in anime history similarly with Yu Yu Hakusho yusuke's demon transformation was literally the coolest thing ever. Also both of those forms have really long hair lmao.

This was a great video, but one thing I do have to point out is that the Super Saiyan transformation wasn’t supposed to be hopeful, the English dub made it more epic and hopeful, but the original Japanese dub made creepy and eerie with the music and sound effects, it made you wonder what the hell is going on with goku and if he’s going to be ok, and then when he finally transforms you think what has he become, then you realize he’s become the legendary super saiyan, and your about to see him desimate frieza, don’t get me wrong I love both versions but the original Japanese does capture the feeling way better, if you took out the music completely you would get a very creepy vibe that would keep you on the edge of your seat watching it, just wanted to point this out sorry if I dragged it along for too much 😅

I’ve seen both the English also heavily changed the speech in the English it’s so much more like heroic and superman like lol when in reality goku as a character is so different Japanese is definitely better but I’d actually say it still was very hopeful to me but also like you said with an eerie tone mainly cause the form was kinda a climax to the arc goku was having through the series starting with meeting radits when he completely denied being a saiyan but as time went on he got closer to that heritage then after his talk with vegeta about defeating frieza for the saiyan kind Abd then he started saying things like I am a saiyan from earth to finally not only becoming a super saiyan but ultimately stating “I AM A SUPER SAIYAN the arc was complete he finally accepted his Heritage awww man it’s so iconic lol

Kinda late to the show, but to answer why super saiyan looks the way it is. First, it's because Akira Toriyama wanted that stated to be easily conveyed. Second, in the manga it was hard labor to fill in the hair with black ink, so in order to save time, the author made super saiyan hair blond which only required an outline rather than whole filling. Time efficiency is basically the answer as to why super saiyan look the way it does.

You wanna talk about iconic transformations, you gotta talk about the second-most icon in moment in anime: Rock Lee dropping the weights, and the subsequently opening the gates! Honestly Naruto has some great ones, from that, to all the different Nine Tails transformations (especially 4 and 6), curse mark Sasuke (the hand-wing is sick as fuck), to 8 Gates Might Guy!
