Watching these commercials now as a 40+ Gen Xer, I now realize how great it was to have some of the original voice actors reprise roles in these. Including Peter Cullen, and Frank Welker.
@@yell0wberry Yes, I totally agree with you John. The late Chris Latta comes to mind as well. I also loved Roger C. Carmel's Cyclonus, Motormaster, and for one season 3 episode, his Unicron voice. The voice actors of G1 were truly a talented all-star cast.
Original toy was basically an upgraded Convey/Prime with a new exoskeleton body. And yes US writers originally created Magnus to be Primes successor and rival to Galvatron...but somehow we got boring Rodimus.
I remember seeing the toys for the movie bots in the store wondering "who the he'll are these guys"? Then when I saw the movie it all made sense. No internet back then and no spoilers. Great times!
Except for one spoiler: "and soon, A NEW LEADER WILL ARRIVE! Introducing Rodimus Prime! No one takes on the Decepticons like Rodimus Prime!".. that told us something was going to happen to O.P., but not what.
@@mrwoods22 that may be the case but nobody knew what was going to happen walking in. We weren't trained to look at small minor details in trailers like we are now.
I love how they use frank welker's and Peter Cullen's voices in the commercials. Holy crap I woulda had a nerdgasm if I heard their voices on the t.v. :P !
Interesting how Frank Walker’s voice (as Megatron) makes a reference to Galvatron, when in the story, they were the same being, just in two different bodies.
Sky Lynx was an awesome toy. Never owned the original, but I got the next best thing, Earthrise Sky Lynx. It’d be cool to see Octane get a leader class figure. Also, it must’ve been an experience to see the movie back in 1986. Never saw the original movie till 2009. After buying the first two seasons and watching them, I saw the 1986 movie, and man did I feel the same way as the kids who saw it in the theaters. Speechless and left an everlasting impression on me.
The Transformers were a big part of my 80's youth, and one of my fondest memories of that time was getting the Superion gift pack for Christmas one year. Funny thing is, now that I'm an adult, I have more Transformers now in the 2.5 years I've been collecting than I ever had when I was a kid! The same can be said for all my favorite toys of the past -- Hess trucks, Shogun Warriors, Star Wars, Marvel Comics superheroes, you name it.
When a kid could actually play with his Transformers toys and they didn't require a 20 page instruction manual and 20 minutes to transform...not that the new ones aren't really neat, they just seem to be more of a collectible than an action toy. Oh and only rich kids could afford Omega Supreme lol.
I like the more complex transformations, as a kid I never ever looked at the instructions, that was part of the fun to me. So something like the earthrise/kingdom Optimus Prime is just about the perfect toy. The truck looks great, and the robot mode is so G1 and the transformation is complex but not frustrating and ugly like the movie figures.
here in the Philippines Omega Supreme was the ultimate status symbol when it comes to transformers, even the rich kids during those days cannot make their parents buy them one because of the price. there were knock offs though that you need to assemble from scratch, it was like a kit. :)
Those with complex transformations are masterpiece figures targeting the adults who grew up with G1 transformers as a kid and always wished they had a perfect toy that walked straight out of the TV screen, and are willing to pay hundreds for them. I call it the fulfillment of a childhood dream.
@@Selzor They also say in another trailer that Optimus Prime and Megatron fight to the death. That, and the Rodimus Prime toy, was a blatant telegraph that they were going to kill Optimus.
It Rocks put the Greatest Spin on how they did it magical fairytale creation animation love to return in spirit and never leave too many words the list is endless another dimension portal World was alive happening and doin vibes feelings another level planet scale class league to say about the 80s 2tv channels video tapes and games toys and of course these cartoons the music entertainment top notch than any other era years decades and history and that the 80s deserve to live on forever eternity that's what i think and want
1986 was definitely the best year of Transformers commercials. I was a kid in Sweden at the time so it's fun now watching these for the first time as an adult. The music is so cool, especially how they rework the lyrics of the main theme to suit the product, e.g. Dinobots, Stunticons/Aerielbots and Triple Changers. Love it!
80s wasn't just the best decade to live in as far as toys.. cereals were great, cartoons, sitcoms, the birth of the NES and Sega Master System, the list goes on. I didn't have many transformers growing up in the 80s but as of the past 7-8 years, I've been collecting G1s only and have a nice starter collection. If you was born in the 90s and later, you missed out on a really great decade.
Agreed. The 80's was a great decade to be a kid despite the absence of the internet. I too have been collecting G1 transformers but I only have Inferno, Brawn, Trailbreaker and Highbrow for the Autobots and for the Decepticons, I have Shockwave, Cyclonus, Astrotrain and Blitzwing. I'd get more but they're expensive and I second guess myself about buying them as I have them only for display purposes, I don't play with them as I'm an adult after all.
@@KnickKnacksPlasticPlanet hence why they brought Opitmus back. If the writers had made Rodimus a competent leader instead of the 'Give him problems kids can relate to' it would have been a different story.
@@FIDreams Nah, they brought back Optimus because kids were locking themselves in bedrooms and crying their eyes out. LOL. It wasn't an evaluation of Rodimus Prime's leadership. People - especially children hate change. Take off your internet bias, go back and re-watch the original G1 cartoon and the movie. Optimus is actually a pretty big chump who gets duped by Megatron at every pass presumable getting thousands of human non-combatants killed in the first two seasons(see episodes The Ultimate Doom, Heavy Metal War, Megatron's Master Plan), gets the Autobots exiled to the moons of Cybertron, (pre-movie) and gets almost the entire 1984 toy line killed because he's too dumb to not openly discuss important plans out in the open where freaking Laserbeak can spy on them and report his ENTIRE plan back to Megatron and gets Autobot city sacked. (Transformers the Movie) Actually if you think about it Optimus was a pretty shitty leader in the fact he CONSTANTLY allowed his personal honor (arrogance) to endanger his troops or the humans he always swore to protect. Rodimus is the one who like a good general presses the advantage and actually wipes the Decepticons off Cybertron (post movie) sends them to exile and ushers in the end of the war, dispatches the Quientesson threat, (shown throughout season 3, Five Faces of Darkness) liberates an entire planet of lost Autobots, (Fight or Flee) and THEN is instrumental in bringing dumbass Optimus back to life! (Return of Optimus Prime.) Like a good general Rodimus is constantly taking advice from his lieutenants (Kup, Springer, Ultra Magnus) and weighing decisions. Unlike Optimus who is always like "We must leave earth to be raped by Megatron - my honor dictates it." *For the record, I like Optimus Prime too, I'm just citing examples where he was less than great to illustrate how the 'Rodimus Prime was a shitty leader' trope is tiring.
Maaaaan these back memories when I was a kid in west philly rushing home from school. The fast talking and the rushed animation sequences advanced my puberty 😂
I got metroplex for christmas in 1988. It was just about the only thing that I asked for. Seeing all of these commercials back to back makes me feel a wee bit manipulated, but overall.. I'm thankful that this entertainment was around for us back then. Very strong positive emotions associated with the transformers.
I always thought it was funny that the Sharkticon commercial has the line "What could be more terrifying than..." immediately followed up by Wheelie's voice given how much the character is loathed by the fandom. It's like Hasbro knew he was despised so it was a wink and nod to fans.
Every 80s,90s child : Fantastic Transform Robot series after watching each Transformers commercial. For me from 00s : cross thing when I see an child Transform into the Robot.
I remember hearing, "Does Prime die?" in the trailer when I was a kid and thinking, well of course he does! Why else would you ask? Strange how much they spoiled ahead of time.
T.F commercial drinking game: take a sip every time they make a song about the character/s in the commercial. Remember to watch all commercials during this game, you may or may not die of alcohol poisoning
Nothing but GREAT memories from these commercials. Hated to see Gen 1 go but Gen 2 brought "evolution" to the world of Transformers that changed things for the better
Man when prime did in the movie sales DROPPED I remember I cried when I seen him die and hot rod became new leader I was like I don't want anymore transformers that's why G.I. Joe changed their story and said duke was in a coma that would have really killed Hasbro that year
Exactly, the concept that Transformers could die was suddenly thrust upon us.......totally unexpected.......just to bring in a new wave of sup-par toys.....it was the beginning of the end.
@1CodacNVegas And if you pay careful attention to "G.I. Joe: the Movie", you could tell they wanted to try it with Duke, as well! It was obvious the Prime backlash made them change course, but only after the animation was done.
@@bengejuknowit3048 yeah? That is basically the same case for me but instead of UK it was where I live: Puerto Rico (sometimes it has always been hard to find that kind stuff here and somehow nowadays it is even worse). I searched a lot of places and never found such fig (but I once heard there was a kid in school who did have it apparently. If that is true then I will say the same thing I said back then in school: "Lucky bastard").
The Logos the Voices and Themes the Movie heart of 86 hard to believe its 37years yikes and its coming into its 40s and realizing getting old really does suck love the concept to be blessed and part of the greatest decade of all time never to forget miss it so much oh hail the 80s
Its cause almost everything was new and exciting in the 80s. In the past 30 years the only new things have been the internet and cell phones. Everything else has been a variation or regurgitation.
Thank you for posting this!!!! Some of these commercials I haven't seen before, specifically some of the ones advertising Transformers: The Movie (one of my favorite films). Again, thank you!!!
@@amitypredator9385 I always figured Galvatron would sound like Megatron in the cartoon if he were sane anyway, since they obviously couldn't afford Leonard Nimoy to voice him after the movie.
@valiant wrestling Federation. I agree. I would have preferred Megatron as voice compared to post movie Galvatron. As an adult, I can now appreciate Frank Welker's take on an insane, and nearly constantly screaming Megatron/Galvatron, but as a kid, I really missed Megatron's raspy voice.
After gen 1, they never put any thought or care into the vehicle sizes from one Transformer to the next, but a triple changer that can change from an aircraft carrier to a jet of the same size (5:41) has to be the worst offender in the entire Transformers toy line-up. I wonder if the person who thought of that could even tie his shoes.
What the heck G1 had terrible scale overall. Studio Series and the current WFC and upcoming Legacy lines have great scaling. Not perfect, but far from void of thought and care
Wow great commercials. I just about had 70% of them toys as a kid. Didn't finish Predaking. Loved the Dinobots. Could not find Grimlock (best transformation ever) to save my life. Checked out two Kay-Bee stores, two Kids R Us, K Mart and Mongomery Wards to no avail. The Predacons were awesome. Grimlock and Sunstreaker were the two I really wanted but could not find. G1 toys were the best.
Kinda odd how the memories of these commercials come back after more than 30 years. It's like they were placed in an inaccessible storage somewhere in my brain until after I watched this youtube again. Then its "oh yeah, i remember that!"
crazy how cool was those days, wish 4K camera and TV existed back then... good old days! i might watch my 80s transformers DVD collection again - just need to find that DVD player....
In this Galvatron toy commercial, Galvatron is voiced by Frank Welker before it was written that he fell in the plasma stuff on the planet thrall by Rodimus Prime and all so Starscream and Thundercracker and Skyworp are all online
I was trying to do the same with action figures from other cartoons, I was quickly disappointment when I found out a Dr. claw action figure was almost $80
@@yell0wberry Try this in my homeland germany, with luck you could find this figure for under 300$, 80$ would low prive here. USA is a paradise for us germans for toys and videogames to a "fair" price.
NOBODY and I mean NOBODY can make them like they used to !!! The Vintage can you feel it !!! (OH make sure you keep the manual the complexity of it all)
Ha! The ad for the movie that starts at the 8:23 mark came from one of our local stations, back when we were living in Ohio. And then it turned up again in the special features of an Australian DVD box set I bought in 2009 when I was back in England. Ah, WUAB Channel 43, what memories!
...but still exists in Transformers limbo, allowing his ghost to harass the Galvatron-era Decepticons. And time-travel back to the Beast Wars era and possess Waspinator.
