I was MASSIVELY disappointed in the Revenge of the Fallen Skids. I remember hearing about the twins, hoping for Sideswipe and Sunstreaker, kicking ass and making wisecracks. Instead, we got...skids and mudflap. Thank fek we had IDW and James Roberts to wow a decent story for Skids
@@ChrisMcFeely As someone who knows how high Marvel comic Starscream's KO count was when he was cosmically powered thanks to one of Diamond Bolt's older videos. I know how it feels at times.
MTMTE Skids really is the best incarnation of him, pointless death aside. And while I'm generally not someone who thinks about Transformer shipping a ton, I happily make an exception with Skids and Nautica.
I'm not one for shipping usually either but because I love Nautica so much, I head-canon shipped her with Brainstorm. His crush on Quark was never reciprocated that we know, he was also amongst their good friend group, and the penultimate issue featured the two holding hands as they fought. But Skids was definitely a close second 😁👍
Fun fact: In Issue 1 of Last Stand Of The Wreckers, there was a panel where the Decepticon jet Snare _decapitated_ two Autobots with his wings. If you looked at the colours of those two headless 'bots you'll notice that they share the same colours as Revenge Of The Fallen's Skids & Mudflap. You can thank the comic's colourist Josh Burcham for that act of fandom displeasure for that! 😈
I actually did not notice that part of the comic, I had to go back to check and you're right. There are two Autobots with Skids and Mudflap's colors that get decapitated instantly on the panel. It gives me some sense of sadistic pleasure.
Basically... G1 Skids - the forgotten one RID Skid-Z - the one from a forgotten series Movie Skids - the one everyone wants to forget IDW Skids - the one nobody will forget
i still have both of the 2009 variants of skids as well as his alternators counterpart i got a year and a half ago for my birthday. (the ice cream variant broke but i glued it back together kinda)
Fun fact We loved the twins in latin america because we didn't heard the "racism" implicit in their voices and just them being so goofy. As a matter of fact Skids is dubbed by Alan Prieto, the same guy who dubs stewie and Baymax for latin america, while mudflap was dubbed by the same dude whos Rigby s voice for latin america too We missed them in dotm
Finalmente un fan latino, y concuerdo de hecho me parecieron buenos personajes, osea ayudaban en lo que podían, eran graciosos y más memorables que algunos del cast.
So basically your dub made them sound & act less like racist stereotypes via some form of censorship. Honestly one of the better uses of censorship if you ask me.
I just realized. There was a Scottish band called the Skids who played in the late seventies (Stuart Adamson, their lead singer and guitarist, would later go on to form Big Country, my favorite band of the time). Years later, Team Train Wreck give Skids a Scottish accent for their dub of “Liars A to D: Hangers On” from MTMTE. Coincidence? I think *not!* Anyway, awesome video on a low key awesome character from G1 onward!
Ever since Thew made the skids episode, skids has suddenly started to appear everywhere. This can't be mere coincidence. It could also just be because people finally realised how precious he is.
@@juniper3955 no denying it. But his supposed unknown status was there back in G1 days according to this video. I think many old schoolers who don’t even remember his name would recognise his toy.
@@danielebowman As someone who read the UK Transformers comic as a kid, my response to the title of this video was "what, the guy who has his own extensive 'b-plot' story arc, which went on for (seemingly) years"
@@arfived4 It seems to some the brilliant UK comic was an "unknown" quality. I'm sure it's why Transformers G1 era seemed to last longer in popularity than the US with the latter lines getting European exclusives.
The thing I remember most about Skids is he was the first Transformer SFDebris ever got. After a grueling summer job, he saved up what he thought was enough to buy Megatron, but no one told him about tax, so he had to settle for Skids. He was rather ticked off that by the fact that in one of his few appearances in Triple Takeover, it wasn't the Decepticons that took him out, he just crashed. "Oh, for God's sake, Skids, you didn't even lose the fight. You just crashed, you fucking asshole, Skids! I scrubbed toilets for you!"
@@ltb1345 He's a reviewer. He's done a lot of stuff like Star Trek, Transformers and a bunch of others. He told this story twice. Once in his review of Triple Takeover and once in his review of Revenge of the Fallen.
@@VerdantRange Most of his stuff isn't on RU-vid but his own site now because he kept getting copyright claimed. His review style is really good. Superman vs. the Elite is possibly the best video review I've ever seen
Revenge of the Fallen Skids and Mudflap are kinda like Donald and Douglas from the British tv show Thomas the Tank Engine. By that, well they’re twins and sometimes disagree with each other
G1 Skids is pretty massively underrated. Every other version of him is basically forgotten, while others are basically hated. It’s a shame he doesn’t get much attention in current TF shows anymore.
Still love that SF Debris joke that involved Skids during his review of the Triple Takeover episode. Chuck goes on to say that Skids was one of the first Transformers toys that he bought and was legitimately excited to see him in the G1 cartoon. Cue the car pileup in that episode, several seconds of awkward silence, then "I scrubbed _toilets_ for you!😭"
I love it that you do this every Saturday morning 😇 it reminds of when I was a kid excited for Saturdays to watch transformers, spiderman and his amazing friends, bionic six etc etc. So many good memories, thanks for bringing that all back to me. Keep up the Fantastic work, hope you are well and staying safe 😊 🙏 ❤
At least his elbows will bend, something that always bugged me with the original, given that was pretty much the only kind of articulation Autobot cars _did_ have. :)
Man, the original profile Budiansky wrote for Skids was the best version of his personality. I do wish he'd continued to have the green color scheme though, as it makes him stand out and look less generic among the Autobots.
Man I really need to read MTMTE cause I could've sworn I saw a scan that showed Star Saber killing Skids 🤔🤔. Fantastic vid as always. Would love to see a vid on The Universe War.
The Skids and Mudflap from ROTF were, at least for me, an interesting concept executed poorly, very poorly. Like they could’ve been those rebel soldiers who performed their missions on a kamikaze way, or be those “bad guys” that actually pretend because of their own insecurities, and thus have a better approach with the discriminated communities of civilian humans who look like gangsters, but aren’t gangsters. In a darker way, they could’ve been somewhat of corrupt autobots, who let some decepticons live, in exchange of weapons, resources, or information, and then betraying those decepticons after getting what they want, only to get killed because of their own ambition.
I don't like sentinel because it killed skids and mudflap and I like the way they are twins in the movie especially when one's father is a twin, he likes it more when he sees a twin in the movie
For those who don't know the Diaclone car robo version of the toy came with a small motorcycle with fold down handle bars and when the toy was in vechile mode you could open the back door and place the little motorcycle inside.... Just like the real vechile.
@@twistedgaming9185 nice. Hopefully the MP version will have it.. I'm not sure if the real vechile was only sold in Japan or not but over there if you bought 1 of them you actually got the motorbike with it.
Hey, ever noticed that the original car in disclose were like ginormous compared to the little pilots? I understand that was because of limits at the time, but still
Even RID kinda forgot Skid-z. He(and Tow-Line) were half forgotten after their intro episodes and briefly came back right in the middle of the final battle. I don't remember it was him or Tow-Line but one of them had a 5 second cameo in one of the banned episodes due to 9/11, making them even more forgotten to the American audiences.
@@HenryLouis21 And yet Que got a toy despite also being the worst Say what you will about Skids, but there's no denying that he had a good toy back then, whether people liked him or not
So what got me into transformers as a whole was ROTF. I remember as a kid there was a teaser trailer that featured Skids and his toy was one of the first I’d picked up. I built this backstory in my head that he and Mudflap were protectors of other humans like Bumblebee was to Sam. I didn’t picture him as the awful character he ended up being but more a dim witted but hopefully heroic autobot. Of course I was massively dissatisfied with the film version so to me movie Skids will always hold a warm spot as the first time my imagination really took off with the Brand. Shame how he turned out.
the film twins are the example of what happens when you try to hard to make a focus charather. and then drown them in the bay-sauce™. the best part of them, is the duocom mode that happears in the beginning, should have kept that humor, they would have worked
So as a kid I loved Skids and Mudflap, I had toys of them and genuinely didn’t know it was a racist stereotype. Looking back it was obvious, but for a little kid they just seem like fun silly characters. They still hold a weird, screwed up place in my heart alongside other characters that looking back on them they were either racist or just cringy but as a kid they were fun. I still love the idea of trash talking twins but I just wish they had been handled better. I also will stand by them having one of the coolest scenes in the movie when they fight Devastator just for the fact that they were fighting the coolest designed character other than Megatron in my opinion. I hope they can recapture what childhood me saw in the characters without being offensive in the future.
Amazing. This is the first time I’ve seen someone talk about ROTF Skids and Mudflap without saying “Michael Bay” a single time. Good on you for that. 👍
DId you know that two bots that seemingly resemble the live action skid twins made a cameo in the idw optimus prime series in sideswipe virtual reality when he was about to die.
I like to think that Skids and Mudflap could be brothers in arms among Cybertron's military as theoretician and vehicle mod engineer respectively in some new continuity...
Easy to imagine Budiansky's Skids spending his free time with Tigatron. Ha. Describing movie-Skids as "not very bright". How very diplomatic. If the movie needed to have a set of Autobot twins to provide some comic relief (ignoring the fact that every OTHER character was ALREADY providing comic relief), it would've been great if they had two brainiac Skidses on set. They're super-smart, they know all of this obscure Cybertronian lore, making them actually have a PURPOSE in accompanying Sam in his quest to find the Matrix. If they have to be comically annoying, at least they could be INTELLIGENTLY comically annoying, showing off their know-how, finishing each others' sentences as they deliberate and pontificate... "Hey, those symbols! The language of the primes!" "Primish, I think?" "Primese. Definitely Primese." "A dead language." "Definitely dead." "Unused for centuries." "Beyond even OUR knowledge." "We should remedy that when we get home." "Oh definitely." "How would we learn it?" "Yes. Dead language, not many around to teach it." "Perhaps perusing the archives would be prudent?" "The archives, yes." "Should be fun." "We'll make a day of it." "And if unsuccessful..." "...At least we know where we couldn't learn it." "And we still learned something." "YES! LEARNING!!" 🤜🤛
Nice to see Skids finally get his time to shine in this series. Personally, I think the upcoming Legacy Skids looks quite solid, and I hope it's a good figure alongside that upcoming Masterpiece figure too. That, and I hope Powerglide will get his time in the spotlight in the near future
I remember on a TFW2005 podcast many years ago, some jackass was insisting that Skids from ROTF was not racist - and the people saying he was racist were in fact the real racists! That’s when I unsubscribed from the podcast.
@@HenryLouis21 People do this all the time, claiming that any time someone sees parallels to a racist stereotype in a fictional character THEY'RE the ones being racist. It's a bad faith argument from people who don't wanna admit that media they like can be racist.
@@CollinBuckman Oh, so I guess black people are racist themselves for calling out racism and problematic stuff that appears in many sorts of media? It's not just white people who have an issue with racism in media. No, they are not racist for calling out racism in popular media. "It's a bad-faith argument from people who don't wanna admit that media they like can be racist." how is it bad faith to call out that something in a form of media is rooted in racism or not? It's not bad faith when you see a character being portrayed stereotypically and calling it out for being rooted in racism. "don't wanna admit that media they like can be racist." that's not a good excuse to be okay when a form of media is being racist or portrays a character who is rooted in stereotypes.
I loved him in the MTMTE series, he was awesome. It took me a while to realize he was supposed to be the green aberration. Since his toy is in Legacy, I hope he reappears soon.
With apologies to cowgirl Charlene, IDW Skids is simply the best. Smart, funny, courageous and compassionate. One of my favorite moments involves this epic putting in his place of Autobot Megatron... *Megatron:* "Might be populated", you said *might.* If that planet were teeming with *Cybertronians* then yes, there'd be an argument for going back into the breach. But I doubt that's the case. *Skids:* Ah, your *true colours.* I'd forgotten how purple they were. *Megatron:* You've forgotten something else. I am your prisoner. I've been granted conditional bail while we look for the Knights of Cybertron. Where in my bail terms does it say-where *precisely* does it say-that I have to risk my life to save a handful of strangers? *Skids:* (Taps Megatron's Autobot insignia) Right. There. What does that even *mean* to you? How has wearing it forced you to modify your behavior? I'm serious! How has being an Autobot *in any way* prevented you from doing *exactly* what you want? Because if the answer is "it hasn't" then nothing you've said or done in the last six months counts for *anything.*
That racing driver of that racecar in RID, Auggie Cahnay, was originally a character in the G1 cartoon who appeared in the episode "Trans-European Express", a racer who disliked the idea of the robots (namely Autobots) taking part in a Trans-Europe race, but he softened up a little after teaming up with Bluestreak, Wheeljack and Bumblebee to stop the Decepticons from acquiring a weather-controlling energy device buried under Turkey.
rw:Skids and Mudflap in the 2009 movie almost reminded me of the Mario Bros cause of their colors.^_^ my fav scene was when they took on the Decepticon combiner Devastator.^_^
Poor Skids. I barely thought about him during the G1 era. All of his cartoon appearances amount to about 1 minute. He does have an underdog appeal to him. If it were up to me, as an inside joke, in the cartoon, I would ALWAYS have Skids as the first Autobot shot and hurt whenever they fought the Decepticons while a fellow Autobot would yell “SKIDS, NO!!!” After the battles, you would always see him getting repaired by Wheeljack and Ratchet. He would be like Kenny from South Park; Getting hurt in every episode. BUT, in the 1986 Movie, Skids would have his redemption. The underdog SKIDS would be the one to receive the Autobot Matrix Of Leadership; not Hot Rod. The Autobot everyone had doubts about, would then end up as a great leader. Skiddimus Prime. 💪🏼🤖
I was nine and was on a family trip to see other family for Thanks giving. My grand father took me to Wal-Mart and let me pick out a TF, thats when I saw one I didn't even know existed and looked so cool I had to have him. Skids is still a fav. 37 years later.
When I watched Revenge of the Fallen for the first time, Skids and Mudflap were painful to listen to. If I had written them, I would have made them street-smart youngins that often talked big, but couldn't walk the walk. Kinda like Johnny Test. Also, instead of 'we don't really do much reading'. I would've had them say 'Nobody's spoke that in decades'. But, that's just my opinion.
I don't have much in the way of memories of Skids but he is one of the figures I have been wanting a solid version of since the generations one kinda left me feeling meh. Hopefully the Legacy release makes up for it.
I'm glad RotF wasn't the last iteration of him. Seeing as how that version of him was my first introduction to the character, I'm glad there are much better more thought out versions of him. I know some people did find the twins funny in the movie. I didn't care so much about the stereotypical portrayal I just didn't find them funny, could barely understand 90% of what they said (probably why I didn't find them funny too) and thought they didn't really contribute much at all to the movie. I mean the ice-cream truck part was pretty funny at the start of the movie but that was about it. I'm quite fascinated by the idea that Skids in the comic almost quit being an Autobot because he wanted to instead learn more about Earth culture instead.
I think the problem with the live action movies is they add cool characters but change them so drastically so you don't recognize them barely show them long enough to realize who it is or just end up scraping them or making a new bot or something else which generally gives a negative impression sometimes because we hold our classic characters so dear
I wonder when Frenzy and Rumble will get their episode. I’m expecting them to have only one episode for both since that’s an easier way to explain FIRRIB and FIBRIR
By God, I cannot WAIT for that video. FIRRIB, FIBRIR, unite across the battle line in the comments! Okay jokes aside, that’ll be an episode just as awesome as this one.
Great Stuff! The G1 Skids did seem a bit of an outlier, but not more than some other figures, like the kind you could only get from pack-in ordering forms. The live action films definitely seemed to have it in for African American _coded_ Transformers. First with Jazz’s fate (also being the smallest of the cast, even smaller than Bumblebee) and of course the depiction of the twins in the follow up, film. Someone in Hollywood wanted to send a message, an angry one. It was a different time, for sure.
I mean, we can probably put it on Michael Bay and his writers, being in charge of the movie as they were. At least Jazz was a good character in the movie though
I wish that if they did a comic or series for Transformers Legacy, Skids would team up with the Cybertron Version of Mudflap. Skids: Haven't I seen you before? Mudflap: Not in this life.
Never realized he was even in any American g1 episodes and never seen the g1 toy when I was a kid and I thought I'd seen them all especially all the characters from the first 2 seasons.I guess it's easy to miss since he was only on screen for a couple of seconds in two episodes and the original figure seemed to be overlooked.
In Europe, the Diaclone Toyline was released before Transformers, so you most likely had the Red Honda City Turbo, which was later turned into the Autobot Reboost!
@@HenryLouis21 they couldn't even make a crankcase toy in it and everyone hates it so hate them or not hasbro might make it for fans who likes them because in there eyes they see money
@@TransformersRocks1YT There is no way they are going to make Skids and Mudflap toys because the only thing they see is money. They will most likely distance themselves from those characters and forget they even exist.
Aw what? We're not going to get a studio series skids? (Or subsequently mudflap) Man, that stinks. Yeah they weren't my favorite bunch in the film, but so much for my hopes of a complete movie collection.
I know the movie version is really hated, but I’ll be honest, I kind of want an updated ice cream truck figure just because it’s a really unique vehicle
I remember my friends and I thinking he was a mis drawn Ironhide in Triple take over. But yes, I have to admit I love the MTMTE and have posed his toys saving with Nautica
Got him for Christmas from my Sister. All I could think was that I got a Transformer that transformed into a minivan. Boring….. Then I started to play with him. Loved that toy. Just felt bad for my Sister. Bet she thought I didn’t appreciate him.
