Transforming a Plain Canvas Bag with Granny Squares!

Ever noticed those plain canvas bags at craft stores? They're cheap and great for lining crochet bags, and I thought it would be perfect for granny squares, and I put that to the test in this video. It was a really fun experiment, and it turned out better than I could have imagined!

This is such a clever way to use granny squares. I love making motifs as a summer project while I’m bored to death at work 😂 and this is a great way to use them.

I would do a button loop around straps so you could remove to wash separately. Very clever idea

Nice! the only thing I'd suggest is perhaps sew some buttons on the upper edge of the bag and use the spaces in the upper crochet border to keep the cover from sagging with use.

Wow!!! What a great gift idea! I’m going to crochet the border a little longer so it will fold over onto the other side, cut the canvas straps off and add some faux leather purse straps that I’ve had forever! I don’t have a sewing machine so you just made my day!!

What a wonderful idea. I picture a bag made with only yellow granny squares and brown flowers added to the centers to represent a sunflower. Great video!

What a great project. We will be losing plastic bags as an option at our grocery stores here in Virginia soon. I would love to make these to keep in my car for grocery trips. They would hold quite a bit and the canvas bags are sturdy. Plus, they are so cute with the granny squares, they'll look cute in my car. Thanks for sharing!

It looks very nice. Because the bottom of my bags are Rectangle, I would add a sretch of leather with holes pre-punched; I wouldn't want the yarn to become damaged with the bag sitting upright. To help that happen, I would add the depth (1.5" or 2.5") wide up both edges of the design, to help the design to better fit around the squared bottom of the bag. As far as the handle, I might use my sewing machine for a basting (longer stitch) in your choice if color. The handles get a lot of wear! Another choice, may be to replace the handles with leather & Stitch them in place! I am sure there are more choices!!! The top border really adds to the colors!

I think I'm going to try this but instead of looping around the handles I'm going to add some buttons around the top rim that can fit through the granny "spaces".

so you mean sew buttons onto the top edge of the bag then push the buttons thru the DC gaps to keep it in place ? yeah i 'll do that too then

I love this idea. So much better and simpler than the traditional way of lining a bag. I would imagine that the canvas bag will hold up better without the bag stretching out so much with use. After seeing this, I checked your channel. So many great videos to watch. I think I've found a new crochet rabbit hole to explore. I subscribed right away.

Great idea! I’d probably add a bottom to the bag to make it a little roomier, and I’d attach the top edge by either sewing it onto the canvas bag or attaching it with fabric glue.

Would you not stich the top. To secure it with a blanket stich. That may stop it sliding down the tote. Love the idea. I have lots of free totes and dont like the pictures would be a great way to cover them up. Love your idea.❤

Beautiful. I would like it to to be detachable from the liner so that the canvas can be washed in hot water and the crochet part can be hand washed and blocked.

Good idea, but be careful washing the cotton canvas. They can shrink pretty bad and become misshapen.

My opinion... I think you can keep the squares the same size going forward. Just add a couple of long rows of borders to join the "front to the back" panels. So... 3 squares, border border, 3 squares, border border. Now that you know you need a few rows added to the top, you can add half the amount to the bottom, or just keep it as the "cuff" that it looks like. Great job overall! I love that there's no sewing to "add a liner" or straps. KUDOS!

Thank you so much for this . I made one for my daughter and she loves it. I did poked holes all around the top of the bag and blanket stitched the crochet case to the bag as well as chaining around the handles 🙏🏽🙏🏽❤️

When I tried this for the first time I was told to wash the bag. I watched it turned out wrinkled. And shrunk up really bad so when I try it again. I'm not going to wash it. And I was told to use clear thread to connect. Because I want to use a box bottom Bag, they tell me to use the clear thread. So I'm going to try that next time. Thank you so much. Turned out nice beautiful. Love the colors.

I love this!! I think I'd just grab my needle and thread and hand sew the top to the bag, all the way around. I did one of these smaller ones and use it as my makeup bag. I used the crab stitch around the top. 😉
