This video captures some highlights from the Transforming Conservation: Indigenous Protected and Conserved Areas (IPCAs) gathering, held in May 2018 in London, ON. Hosted by Trent University’s Indigenous Environmental Studies and Sciences program, Plenty Canada, Walpole Island land Trust and Ontario Nature, the three-day event brought together 97 participants, including members of 19 Indigenous communities and organizations and representatives of 34 conservation and environmental organizations, government agencies and academic institutions.
Building off of a previous gathering in October 2017, speakers and participants explored the concept of Ethical Space and shared governance, the recommendations of the Indigenous Circle of Experts, opportunities to advance IPCAs on Crown and private land, and the potential for partnerships and alliances.
The gathering, video and report were generously supported by the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry, Parks Canada, the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Joseph, Ontario Biodiversity Council, Environment and Climate Change Canada and Ontario Trillium Foundation.
