It’s time to be a part of the solution, we are aware that the literacy rates are low. Now what?
The steps to take when teaching a child to read are basic but complex, they are fundamental.
They include;
1. Phonemic Awareness: Emphasizing the recognition and manipulation of individual sounds in words.
2. Learning the Alphabet: Mastering letter recognition and the relationship between letters and their sounds.
3. Building Word Skills: Expanding the child’s ability to recognize and use a variety of words.
4. Phonics and Decoding: Teaching the rules for connecting letters with their sounds to decode unfamiliar words.
5. Vocabulary Development: Enriching the child’s vocabulary through reading and engaging activities, starting with short vowel words.
6. Reading Fluency: Practicing reading smoothly and with expression to enhance both reading time and word accuracy.
7. Comprehension Skills: Strengthening strategies to improve understanding and retention of reading material.
8. Encourage Conversations: Discussing books, stories, and new vocabulary to enhance critical thinking and deeper understanding.
9. Building Confidence: Working to boost the child’s confidence in their reading abilities, which is crucial for effective learning
