Our kitchen is lacking some major features: worktop space and storage. In this project we aim to fix both of those things. Follow along as we attempt to build our first piece of real "furniture" from scrap wood. Firstly, from joists that we incorrectly installed and then ripped out from upstairs. And, secondly, from some old floor boards that we removed some time ago.
As usual, we tried to be a little ambitious and mistakes were made. Can we rescue this old wood and give it a new lease of life? Can we transform our kitchen into something more usable? Let's find out!
Also, stick around to the end for a long-awaited cat update as we welcome our furry friends back to the farm for the first time in almost a year.

As a former apprentice to a cabinetmaker and a veteran of diy, you’ll never truly be able to sand dried glue off wood. The only way is to wipe the glue off as you do the glue up. Damp rug in warm water and wipe as you go. Don’t worry about getting the piece wet. The glue inside will hold. Been doing it this way for decades.

why are you thinking of this as a temporary measure? I think it is very useful, versatile and a tribute to your skills. When we built our first house my husband fitted out the kitchen and we kept it for 35 years - we loved it so much, we love the memories of each attempt to do it right, I didn't want to part with it.

I agree, my husband made me a smaller version of this that sits under the worktop. The baskets are used everyday and as it is on castors, it can be wheeled out when the whole family come over and we need more work surface in the kitchen. I would never changed it for a more “perfect” one. Perfectionism can sometimes get in the way of life.

Mostly because it’s not the right shape for how we want to use the space (can’t reach the sockets on the wall for example). We’ll use this prototype to work out how we want our final table to be (shelves or drawers etc) and later this table will get moved somewhere else. It will still be used, just not in the kitchen

OK here are some of my 50 years of wood working suggestion. Glue squeeze can be 99% cleaned with a slightly damp rag at glue up. Don't forget your table saw can produce incredibly accurate, repeatable tenons for joinery. For larger glue ups, I use pipe clamps. They use cheap black pipe as the bar. I have a selection of 3, 4, 6, and 8 foot sections of pipe. 4 sets of pipe clamps and a selection of pipe is like having an entire selection of clamps. If clamped properly, wood glue will stick. Gluing both sides of a joint just causes more squeeze. Most of the glue you apply is wasted when it squeezes out. Your clamped joints are incredibly thin, almost invisible. When ever possible, carefully align all the pieces for dowels. Use your square and a sharp pencil to make identical marks for your dowel placement. Makes placement of individual legs or pieces less critical. A dado blade for the table saw is an amazing addition. A tenon jig is also incredible.

The absolute joy of woodworking is the process. Stretching your brain to find solutions, the feel of the wood, the smell of fresh sawdust, learning new skills - there is nothing like it. Don't worry about the minor imperfections. Every project I have ever done has had minor imperfections that only I know about and I have made some very nice pieces of furniture. When someone praises your work resist the urge to point out these imperfections! Just bask in the awareness of a job well done. Confidence will come in time. You have made a wonderful start!

Since you guys mentioned wanting to do more woodworking to build furniture (and other projects for your home), I would recommend that you purchase these additional tools as your budget allows. You have a DeWalt table saw (I am assuming 255 mm or 10 inch blade - I have a DeWalt table saw as well) so several good blades to go with it, such as Freud 40 tooth GP blade, a 24 tooth rip blade, and a higher tooth (60 perhaps) for crosscutting - 50 tooth combination blade is good also, and later a good aftermarket miter gauge, and the miter saw already, which are two good basic tools - you built that table using these two tools! Later you can add a dado blade set, but they are expensive. However, if you want build furniture, in addition to a good planer (12 or 13 inch helical head cutter or helical head type if budget allows), you will also need at least a 6 inch jointer, 8 inch if you can afford it, and if your budget allows for it, one with a helical head type cutter (has the square blades the same as a helical head cutter, but not as many - still more expensive than a regular two or three straight blade type) and a 2 1/2 HP router (DeWalt's 618 model is good), but buy 1/2 inch diameter shank for your bulk work. For smaller projects, 1/4 inch shank size will suffice. For the bits, you do not need top of the line bits, but do not buy the cheapest either. A drill press would be nice as well since you can add, with the proper attachment, a square mortising chisel which will allow you to do mortise and tendon joints (very strong). Just make sure the drill press is large enough to accept the attachment with the square chisel inserted with room to do the mortising work. A dedicated mortiser is expensive so the drill press mortising attachment is a much cheaper option. The primary thing is just buy what you need when you need it, but between the jointer and the planer, in my opinion, buy the jointer first since it will help you to square wood which is critical in furniture building. Oh, and probably the most important if you are going to have a shop is dust collection! When working outside it is not as a big problem, but when you go inside and especially working with old, repurposed wood (dust, spores, etc.), you will be glad that you have a dust collection system - 1.5 hp motor, 4 inch hose capable - you can use adapters to attach the hose to your tools. When working with repurposed wood, one thing I use is an 80 lb. magnet to check the wood for nails. If there is a nail in the wood, that magnet will find it! I hope this helps. Just be safe, and I look forward to your future work.

Love the ginger kitty, my little sweetheart, now 10 years old, is a ginger, but with no white, and he's an absolute love. My husband built a few pieces over the years, bookshelves etc, basic but functional and very sturdy, with very basic tools. Through the years and many moves, and lightening the load out of necessity, the only piece I have left is a large blanket chest he made out of pine almost 40 years ago. As creative and handy as he was, he was not great at applying the finish, so that was my job, and I still enjoy refinishing small pieces to this day. Your project came out great, and it reminded me of way back when...thanks guys, been with you since the beginning and enjoy watching your progress...carry on! 🌸

Well done as usual, you two! This one illuminated you, Guy -- your inner qualities that make your learn-while-doing-and-redoing mantra possible and exemplary -- it's your willingness to be vulnerable (make mistakes and show them to us) plus your emotional awareness about the experience ("frustration with myself") *without* having allowed shame to flood in on top of that frustration, and overtake the learning opportunity and shut down your risk-taking or enjoyment. Shame is the ultimate contraction response ... but you stretched outside your comfort zone, got frustrated, yet stayed in expansive learning.

Sweet! Nice work! Only thing I would add is a top coat of epoxy resin on the tabletop, and this is why: Even with all your diligent sanding, staining and finishing, given the nature of wood, there will still be small nooks and crannies where food can hide. This could produce bacteria which, if ingested, could make you very ill. Also, there is the possibility of some of the products used to finish the wood get scraped up into your food. The epoxy would provide an impenetrable, semi-thick clear coat that resembles glass so the beauty of the wood still shines through The end result would be protection from any bacteria or wood products entering your systems, and it would be so easy to clean! That's what I would do if it were mine... 💕
@patriciakeogh5008
@patriciakeogh5008 5 дней назад
Thank you for that information. Does this also apply to wooden chopping boards?
@Sophie-zu7zi
@Sophie-zu7zi 5 дней назад
Wood is naturally against bacteria, so sealing wood with epoxy only makes the bacteria situation worse. Also working with epoxy is not the best for chopping boards as a sealant since it will eventually degrade as it gets worked really hard on. So the best and easiest way is just plain hardwood regularly treated with oil. That seals it for water damage and if you regulary refresh the oil coat you can also clean the wood very easy. Plastics and epoxy both are very bad for chopping boards
