In this video we are doing transition force to a pile. This is a great drill to further advance your dogs retrieving abilities. We often get the question about "why force to _____?" and the answer is to create compulsion and have the dog be able to break through any kind of mental barrier. Is the water chilly this morning or are they feeling lazy and not motivated... well there's no option, we're here to hunt and work and let's go. That's the attitude we want to teach our dogs.

this is where im at. Been trying to do force to pile, but he is shopping. Likes to try and pick up multiple bumpers at one time. Then he will finally pick one up and return.

Bob, I appreciate the transparency of many of your videos. IMO, this is what dog training videos should be: show me what you are doing and let me make a decision on whether or not it is for me. These short videos are also great for translating retriever terms (in this case "force to a pile") to those unfamiliar or new.

Is there a reason to transition from fetch to back? Does fetch go away or is it ised in other situation?

Your videos are very helpful. How far out do you work up to on this drill? My 1-Year-old GSP stays focused up to about 25 yards and then seems to lose interest, sometimes even pausing and looking around confused. When I re-establish the pile by throwing a pumper into it, he will charge it at 100%. Having trouble figuring out if he is confused or just isn't interested in picking up from the pile.

Could be lack of desire but I’d encourage using a white pole to make sure he knows his target as you get further from the pile. Typically when I’m doing force I get done around 25 yards

What level stim are you using there? Ranging from you not noticing, to an ear twitch, to vocalisation?

Depends on the dog… goal isn’t vocalizing obviously but if it happens I don’t fret over that, back back down and keep ‘em rolling

My 10 month old male lab has been at Duck school for 6 months. He is learning a lot but his drive keeps going down. He does everything you ask of him but walks back like “Eeyore”. The trainer said he is in a “do I have to mood”. What can I do to get back that drive he once had?

Can you do a video on Dogs that their drive has dropped or in that “do I have to” mood?
