An interesting compromise are the new Adaptive Sun lenses by Zeiss. They are photocromatic, but start with a 60% tint. Which means, they are ideal in any conditions outside (if needed they darken up to around 95%!). Behind the wheel, you have that 60% darkening, which is not as good as a standard sunglasses' 75% or even 85% darkening, but it's much better than the close-to-no-darkened support you'd get by other photocromatic lenses.

I had transitions before. Not good for driving but if you have alternative transportation motorcycle 🏍️ drive a convertible or someone who’s outdoors a lot .this time Got both prescriptions sunglasses 🕶️ and a pair of regular glasses 👓 for night driving, and wear indoors both progressive lenses. I tried using prescription sunglasses 🕶️ indoors like in grocery stores or walmart had to take them off to see up close. So got clear progressive lenses which improve my vision. Tossed my reading glasses tho. It helped to pay extra to have behind my eyes checked , the old dilating drops I couldn’t do because I had to drive and it took hours to get my vision back to normal. With this new technology I was able to finally checked . So my prescription was perfect. I work overnights and it’s important to have prescription sunglasses 🕶️.eyes are sensitive to bright light. great video .

Good video. I wear photochromic (aka "transitions") glasses most of the time, but for driving I switch to prescription sunglasses with a gradient tint; the gradient tint makes it easier to see the dashboard.

can any Transition lens darken as dark as a tinted pair of rx sunglasses can get...80-85% darkness i think it is? ideally i'd like to not have to switch back and forth between two pairs of glasses but i love my dark sunglasses and i'm just not sure transitions came come close to that...

Transitions XTRActive lenses can achieve what is called category 3 darkness in the sun. This is comparable to standard tinted sunglass lenses that are designed to be worn in the sun. XTRactive is now also available in Polarized as well, which you might like even more since polarized lenses add a layer of protection from glare.
@SWLinPHX

What's the difference or advantage/disadvantage of Transitions Vantage and new Transitions XTRActive Polarized? It seems you get the benefit of polarization with the latter as well as darkening behind the windshield.
@HicksBrunsonEyewear

You are right! XTRActive Polarized lenses have the new benefit of behind the windshield activation. They are also better at darkening in warmer weather.

@@HicksBrunsonEyewear Thanks so much for the response. I need to replace my brown Transitions Drivewear in my gold RayBan aviator frames since the prescription is seven years old, LOL. Trying to decide if I should get Drivewear again in those nice expensive frames with my brand new prescription OR if I should change to Transitions XTRActive Polarized so I can drive at night too. Question is, will the polarization prohibit nighttime driving? I know Drivewear isn't for nighttime, but do I need to get XTRActive non-polarized for nighttime?

Hello! Have you reviewed Transitions Drivewear yet? I’ve searched but can’t see that you have. The reason I ask, is that I bought some Xtractive lenses but they don’t get dark enough in the car (shape of car means windscreen is further forward) and I miss the glare reduction of polarised. So I was thinking of Drivewear and had a couple of questions. Drivewear are not recommended for driving in the dark. Is that because they have a darker base tint? And can a mirror finish be added to Drivewear the same way it can for Xtractive? Many thanks!
@HicksBrunsonEyewear
@HicksBrunsonEyewear 2 года назад
Hello Ian! I would agree that Drivewear is not for driving in the dark. I have driven as the sun is setting, and for a few minutes after sunset, but the window closes pretty on your ability to see well as night falls. The base tint is Yellow-Green, which is ideal in lower light conditions, but not in the dark. It is a great lens for all types of driving conditions from sunup to sundown, because it turns copper when it gets brighter outside, and then dark brown in the brightest conditions. I plan to make a review video, but I have not done it yet. -Daniel Brunson

Of the Transitions Vantage (which are polorized), Xtractive Mirrors (which are not polorized), and Drivewear (which are polorized), which do think works better Outdoors? I spend a number of hours outdoors, each week, training dogs and some pistol shooting sports. Thank you, Tony

@HicksBrunsonEyewear 3 года назад
Hello Tony, It sounds like you lead an active lifestyle! Thanks for the question. Drivewear works great outdoors, but not so well indoors. Vantage works well outdoors, but not so well behind the windshield and not as well as XTRActive in warmer weather. You might want to try the soon to be released XTRActive Polarized, which will work well in warmer weather, activate behind the windshield, and have polarization.

@@ytTonyZ Mirrors will make them darker in a sense. A mirror will let less light in, which will make them feel darker. Our mirror includes a backside anti-reflective coating and adds $90 to the cost of the lenses.

The lenses will continue to turn dark in the sunshine for several years. They may slowly lose this ability to change, but that will not happen for many years and it will be very gradual.

@HicksBrunsonEyewear
@HicksBrunsonEyewear Год назад
That's interesting. There are many factors that influence how dark they will get like UV intensity, temperature, and whether the lenses are exposed to direct sunlight or indirect sunlight. The Transitions XTRActive line works best in warm temperatures and in indirect sunlight.

I have 2 questions: 1) How long will this glass has validity i.e will it fade away soon as years pass by? 2) I went to a store where they told me once i am out in the bright sun it will change to completely dark i.e fully BLACK and your eyes cannot be seen through the glass. Is it true? Kindly answer me thanks a lot. great video by the way.
@HicksBrunsonEyewear
@HicksBrunsonEyewear 2 года назад
Thank you! I am glad you enjoyed the video. Over the years the lens may lose some ability to fully darken and fully lighten, but this will be slight and will depend on how much time you spend in the sun. They will get pretty dark in the bright sun, but perhaps not so dark that no one will be able to see your eyes. They generally get dark enough to provide protection and comfort.

I just purchased some prescription lenses (here in Japan) and am not happy with how dark they get. Even out it the blazing sun they don't get dark enough. Can these lenses be re-tinted? (is this is thing that is possible?) or would I have to get a new pair of lenses made? The coatings here are a bit different name wise but my lenses have AR coating, and they react to UV, so not the Xtractive type.
@HicksBrunsonEyewear
@HicksBrunsonEyewear Год назад
Photochromic lenses have traditionally had a hard time achieving maximum darkness in warmer temperatures. The Transitions XTRActive lenses were made to fix that as they do well in warmer weather. I'm not sure which lens brands you have available in Japan, but you could ask for it by name or something similar.
@hachirev
@hachirev Год назад
@@HicksBrunsonEyewear Thank you for taking the time to reply to this comment. There was a similar active version to choose from when I got my lenses, but the coatings and everything were more "Premium" or they made it look that way for the no active version. Unfortunately I'm stuck with these until I can buy new lenses as I was told they cannot be made darker and the warranty only covers the prescription. (T-T)

In our experience this depends on the number of times they are activated, which varies from person to person. They should last most people at least two years or more. After that you might notice a slight color when they are in the clear state.

I’m glad I don’t wear eye glasses otherwise I’d either have to get prescription sunglasses. Or just wear contacts. Transitions just don’t work. Still too many complains exist about them. Transitions it’s the tablet of eyewear everyone wants the tablet to turn into a computer and still doesn’t happen yet, everyone who wears eye glasses want their solution to not buy eye glasses and sunglasses separately and yet still nothing effective happens yet.

We find that it comes down to personal preference. We like the advanced technology today that is now in the 8th generation and superior to previous generations. It gets darker now, and it changes from dark to clear faster than it ever has. It's not for everyone, but it has made quite a few people much much happier wearing their glasses in bright sunlight with the convenience of automatic darkening lenses.
