Please put the full performance on live RU-vid, because I'm interested in this play, in addition, it is my graduation project and I have only its text.
Hmmm hedge schools were not simply schools for poor Irish people, they were schools that operated covertly to provide a rudimentary education to catholics. The penal laws denied catholics an education, as a "non-conforming" (ie. not protestant) religion.
Hugh doesn't go on to teach in the National School. It's an important part of the plot that his offer of a job there is rescinded to someone less qualified, less loving of language, less embedded in Irish and a tradition of scholarship for its own sake.
That english persons description of what a hedge school is very interesting. Even a nice educated individual that he seems to be he still doesnt understand. They think its about the Irish but its not, its about the english and our need for them to understand what they have done. They see mud cabins, "peasants" in hedge schools, we see what the english has brought us to.We see a land under occupation where they stripped us of everything, even our language. Interesting Ukrainians are putting this on in Ukraine at the moment. If u want to understand Irish history look at Ukraine today. Its the same old evil on a loop. Same arrogance, same land grabbing and same hidden atrocities going on that will be hidden if russian wins.
Near me there's a hill the British named 'Vinegar Hill'. It's real name is Cnoc Fhiodh na gCaor ... which means hill of the wood of the berries which had real meaning. The Brits thought it sounded a bit like vinegar so that's what they stuck on it. A stupid name with no meaning what so ever. Vinegar Hill leaves me with a bitter taste in my mouth.
Seconded. Irritating to keep hearing "the north of Ireland" instead of Northern Ireland in reference to the "Troubles". Does not appear to appreciate how the plan was to erase the language & culture, it was not just "slipping away".
I would love to see the entire play. Is that possible, somewhere or somehow, maybe online? I don't even know where the National Theatre is located but I doubt it is anywhere near where I live in Canada.
Great play but the guy talking has no idea what its really about. His understanding of why hedge schools existed is totally wrong as is his interpretation of the play.
