Transmission Fluid Change In 24 Years! How Bad Does it Look? F-150

Some folks say not to change the automatic transmission fluid on an older high mileage vehicle like this 1997 Ford F150 with 138K original miles. Changing the fluid and flushing the fluid are two different things. Flushing can push particles of contamination into small orifices and clog them which can cause transmission failure. Draining the old fluid and replacing it with a new filter is more gradual and tends to leave the bad stuff undisturbed. Fresh fluid has properties that improve lubrication and also help to maintain the proper fluid pressure necessary for smooth shifting. This video shows what the first transmission fluid change in 24 years on an Ford F150 transmission. Feel free to leave a comment or question down belowand if you get a chance smash the like button. I appreciate you taking the time to watch the video, thanks! -Glen

You might do a flush. As good as that pan looked, I wouldn't be afraid to do a full fluid exchange on it. I've never had trouble before. Whenever I buy a used vehicle, the first thing I do, is change ALL the fluids. That includes the power steering, flushing the brake lines, as well as the engine oil, transmission fluid, differential (s) oil and even the transfer case.(if FWD) I also flush the coolant, especially, if it looks brown.

Hey, Glen! It's crazy ! I am in a similar situation. I am the only owner of a 1998 Camry LE 4-cylinder, which I got brand new in '97. The car is currently 26 years old with 136,000 miles, and I never ever changed the transmission fluid nor the differential. As of late, when i put the car in drive, it reverses, and other times when it's in drive, the car takes a full minute before it moves, even when I press the gas pedal,it stays in motion. And when the car does drive, it makes a whining noise when I accelerate. Lots of sources say not to change the fluid because of the age and mileage, but my mechanic says I should change it, even though I never did this service before. All I would do is drain and fill the ATF and differential. I wouldn't flush it, just drain and fill. I am lost on what I should do . Some say nothing might not get done if I change the fluid because the transmission is done, but I have no idea .
@ozzstars_cars
@ozzstars_cars 18 дней назад
@mc.ashlandfelix7140 fluid is cheap compared to expensive transmissions. I did a second fluid change on the truck in the video and it shifts even smoother now, like it had years ago.

@mc.ashlandfelix7140 18 дней назад
@@ozzstars_cars I appreciate it, Glen! I was just unsure because many people and techs say if I do it, the slipping would get worst because I never did it before. Do you agree with that? The car is almost 30 years old with over 100K miles. And if I do this service, should I have my mechanic drain and fill it twice, or should I have him do that once? He told me if we go along with the process that I should bring 8 quarts of fluid, which I do not understand why because the transmission drain and fill capacity is 2.6 quarts and the differential capacity is 1.7 quarts .
@ozzstars_cars
@ozzstars_cars 18 дней назад

Good video. Simple and Straitforword. FWIW: I cut the heads off of 4 pan bolts that are a little longer than the originals and round off the cut ends. I then cut slots into the rounded ends for a screw driver and thread them into the 4 corners of the case. This keeps the gasket aligned as I put the pan back up. The modified bolts sleep in my 'Odds and Ends' plastic case until needed again. I also disconnect the cooling lines at the radiator and drain the torque coverter. If replacing all that fluid causes slippage, it simply means I was headed for an overhaul soon anyway. Again, Good Video......

Drain and refill.
@andrue17

When you flush the fluid is when you start having problems with the transmission. Better to drain and refill couple times till the fluid is fresh again.

@@ozzstars_cars when you say drain and refill do I have to also change the filter each time I do this? How many times to do a drain and refill, until the transmission fluid is the normal color?
@ozzstars_cars
@ozzstars_cars Год назад
@flowersfam3462 depends how dirty. I usually change the filter once, then next time just change the fluid only.

Great video Glenn, I guess that’s a good way to flush out the torque converter as well just drain it again!! Inside of that oil pan looked great, I was kind of wondering how it’s gonna look but it appears to be a good transmission still👍!! I have a nice Fourth of July buddy!!

@flowersfam3462 with that mileage I would only change the fluid if there was already a shifting issue OR the transmission has had regular interval trans6 fluid changes.

Got a decent leak under the engine. We can't tell if it's oil or transmission fluid because of the age of the transmission fluid. It's brown semi translucent and about the consistency of oil and transmission fluid. 2003 f150 v8 4.6L 347k miles! Checked both dipsticks and both show very low. Certainly haven't lost 13 quarts of transmission fluid . Nor have I lost 5-6 quarts of oil. Unfortunately after driving to the store and back, the fluid is all over the damn engine now.
