In this video I´ll show you how to change the transmission fluid in your ZF 6 speed transmission. In this case in BMW 5 series E60 model. This is a common 6 speed ZF unit, so this procedure will apply for other makes and models too. This is the facelifted model of E60 with electronic gear selector. There might be small differences, if you have an older model.

--WARNING-- this job requires spending a lot of time under your car. If you do not have proper tools to lift up and securely support your car, DO NOT attempt to do this.
Also, I am not a professional mechanic. Should you follow this tutorial, you do so at your own risk...
_____________________________
I used four jack stands with 3 tone capacity each and I also left my floor jack under the front jacking point just to be sure.
You will need:
6-7 litres of ZF LIFEGUARD 6 fluid (yellow)
new oil pan with integrated filter and gasket
new set of bolts for the pan and a fill plug
hex bits 8 + 10 mm
torx T40
torque wrench
drain pan
hand pump
some brake cleaner spray
and something on the floor to prevent stains
Ask me anything if you have any questions.

Awesome video mate, very helpful and spot on. After letting it drain with the cover off for a couple of hours, I was able to initially add about 3.5 litres of oil. Then after running the car and going through the gears a fair bit, I was able to add another 2 litres. So 5.5 litres all up for me.

I’m having the same issue. We’re you able to find any fix?
@DIYProjectX
@DIYProjectX Год назад
Thanks. It could be quite a few things. Fluid state and level among those. Also mechatronic solenoids, perhaps. There is a lot of rubber seals within the gearbox, even that could be a problem.

Try to use the tranny in sport mode for the first 10 minute or switch to neutral at the stops. If there is no jerks at the lights than you have neutral idle control calibration failure. The theoretical solution is to turn off this feature using ISTA-D.

AWESOME VIDEO !!! hey question what are the torque specs for the drive shaft when you reassemble it and do you reuse the 4 bolts you took off???
@DIYProjectX
@DIYProjectX 2 года назад
Thanks a lot. The info I found was 55Nm + 90° and new bolts. But I suggest you do your own search as I am not 100% sure.
@varArnfjorBjarmason
@varArnfjorBjarmason 5 месяцев назад
The Bentley manual says 20 NM + 45° (260-5), and the bolts are 26117529387. I think you used the torque for the transmission to the rear driveshaft, which per the same manual is 55 NM + 90° (260-8)

Hey @DIYProjectX, thanks for a great video. Can you tell me which diagnostic tool do you use to read the transmission oil temperature? I have an OBD adapter with the bimmer link app and this is the only data I cannot get.
@DIYProjectX
@DIYProjectX 4 месяца назад
Hey there. That's a great question. To be honest, I only have a basic scan tool, which doesn't read the tranny oil temp. So I use infra red thermometer to measure the oil pan temperature. Works well.

@DIYProjectX

Yes, it is important. I know my driveway is level, so then it was only a matter of setting all of my jacks the same height. If you do it the same way, you should be OK.

Not sure what you mean exactly. I would only use stands to have all wheels off the ground and have the car perfectly level.

Hi, Great video, I will be doing this over the weekend, how did you check the fluid temperature before checking the gearbox oil level? Thanks!
@DIYProjectX
@DIYProjectX 2 года назад
Well, I didn't, which is not ideal. I didn't have a propper thermometer nor a diagnostic tool that shows this temperature. So, I left it warm up for what I consider a reasonable period of time. Never had a problem since the oil change. Good luck changing yours.

@@DIYProjectX another question i drained 3500ml but only input 2000ml even though i started and shifted gears on manual mode. Is this normal? if not what am i supposed to do?
@DIYProjectX
@DIYProjectX 2 года назад
@@dwightlee6164 You should put in at least what you drained out. It was about six litres in my case. Do you have the six speed ZF gearbox? Is the car completely leveled (both axles lifted in the same height) - that´s super important? You need to go through all the gears, including reverse and give it some time to warm up. Then remove the fill plug with the engine running, transmission in P. It should let you pump more fluid in.

I suppose there is still quite a bit of fluid in the system that doesn't come out. Also, I used all 7 bottles when filling up, so the fluid level was probably low prior the change.
