I think it's a bit unfair to say that nothing has changed in the Padi standards. Previously any instructor could teach an AOW (or OW for that matter) class in a drysuit, even if they weren't a drysuit specialty instructor. This is mindblowing and that was the case in the Linnea Mills accident. My understanding is that this has now changed and Padi require instructors to be qualified as drysuit specialty instructors if theyare going to teach AOW/OW classes in a drysuit. Also AOW classes that are thought in a drysuit must now include a confined water drysuit orientation if the student isn't drysuit certified. These are simple, no-brainer changes and would have prevented this fatality. Also to clarify, I'm no agent of Padi's and not an instructor. But I feel it's not totally fair to say that absolutely nothing has changed as a result of this.
@danadrakedives

It was already a standard that a confined water dive was required prior to making an OW dive in a Drysuit.

PADI has lost my trust. I have used too many PADI certified instructors as guides that I felt should not be teaching anyone. Just recently, I had to call a dive due to lack of confidence in the guide I had hired. As divers, we are ultimately responsible for our own safety and need to hold both dive centers and their staff to a higher standard. One problem is that in some cases, they can be gate keepers to diving that area. So you have to be smart in how you deal with the situation or you'll be black listed for making too much noise! PADI needs to police their shops better. I shouldn't have to do it myself. It's their brand, their standards and they certify these instructors... they need to be held accountable for what they certify!
@JohnDoe-ch7ww
@JohnDoe-ch7ww 6 дней назад
just as an fyi, there has been standards change (mid 2023). Now in order to have a student wear a drysuit, not only does the student need to be drysuit certified, the instructor and any assistants present need to be Drysuit Specialty instructors and/or have the Dry Suit Specialty. Not a perfect fix, but it is change. Not to mention that dive shop is no longer PADI, and the instructor is no longer a PADI member. I am a PADI Instructor

james, i hope people appreciate what is behind the culture of a company like dive rite, who is willing to send you gear to test. ALL of the major companies have plenty of cash / marketing dollars, and run numerous incentives to dive shops to buy their gear... but, the lack of openness to have reviewers like yourself openly review their gear-- that is an antiquated culture that has historically reflected poor innovation and product confidence. look at all companies around the world across all segments-- the companies that put products in hands and say 'come at me' are the companies/products you want to own. to that end, i have almost exclusively switched to dive rite for all of my gear i am 'purchasing'. love my apeks and zeagle gear, but i have found dive rite to simply be more open about their process and gear, and in today's world that is important to me.

I'm a recovering EMS professional, so that's probably a factor here. While I expect a boat to have a med kit, I never know what's in it. Is it just dramamine, bandaids, gauze, and a pocket mask? My guess is that it probably doesn't meet my standards for minimum equipment. I carry a kit with a tourniquet, combat dressing, chest seals, pulse oximeter, airway adjuncts, stethoscope, and a chest decompression needle. Aside from the last two items, all SHOULD be covered in any modern BLS CPR or first aid class but are usually absent from med kits.

@MuttMuttOutdoors Год назад
For the analog vs digital SPG I would like to throw in that you need to carry a spare battery with a digital and IMHO it's a good thing to have both. Air integration on a dive computer with an analog SPG is my ideal as you can compare and see if one or the other is not showing the same and then test/repair/replace whichever one is acting up. Plus if the integrated air or digital gauge fails in the middle of a dive you have an analog gauge that will work. Even flooded an analog gauge will get your through the dive but a flooded digital one is worth a rock at the bottom of the ocean at that point. There is a reason why we have an octo as a backup and it's not just to save someone else, it's first use is to potentially save yourself if your primary acts up, it's second use is to help someone else. It's the basic idea of, "Two is one and one is none."
@Yggdrasil42
@Yggdrasil42 Год назад
Bringing a backup battery is definitely smart but I disagree about using both analog and digital. It increases your failure points and thus the chance of a failure. Contrary to a regulator failure, in which you *need* a backup regulator, you're not in immediate danger when an SPG fails. You have the same amount of gas you had (and I assume you know approximately how much that was) and should have more than enough to safely abort the dive. Having a second SPG doesn't mean you should continue the dive after all.
@MuttMuttOutdoors
@MuttMuttOutdoors Год назад
@@Yggdrasil42 The same can be said for having a power inflator, it adds another potential point of failure and we can add air to a BCD without it. It's acceptable because it is useful. Sure we can end a dive because of a failed SPG but who really wants to do that? I don't get to dive as often as I would like since I live in an area that is landlocked and most local lakes are basically mud holes. Taking along a second source of data keeps you in the water and also can help alert you to a potential issue so you can make the repairs needed before your next dive. That seems like a pretty useful thing for those people in a similar situation. And if you look at a lot of tec diving there are often backups as well for the very reason that when you are doing certain things bailing out right then and there isn't an option. If it's acceptable and necessary for a tec diver the second SPG is safe for a rec diver to have a backup.

Wow what a coincidence! I'm looking at getting my first set of regs so I was chaining through some of your videos on regulators and gauges yesterday including the video you spoke of on transmitters. I was hoping my question was going to come up but it didn't so here goes.. In that video about transmitters (2 years ago), you mentioned to ALWAYS carry an SPG as a backup. Are you thoughts on this still the same? The reason I ask is because I brought the subject of regulators up in a post online explaining that I'm looking for a first stage with at least 2 High Pressure ports for a transmitter and an SPG and had a lot of comments saying "don't carry both". I was of the same mindset as you, it's safer to carry a backup, but some of their points were hard to argue with.. 1. If the Dive computer fails, you'll end the dive regardless. 2. If the SPG fails, you'll end the dive regardless. 3. SPGs wear over time. 4. The digital transmitter is considered by many to be more reliable and if there's a problem, you'll know about it. With the SPG though you may not know right away if the gauge isn't reading accurately but the likelihood is it would read high and in that case, you'd go by the lowest (your dive computer) rendering it basically useless. Essentially most people agreed that the SPG was just an additional failure point and the only situation where it might save a dive would be if the transmitter died (typically down to user error given that most now warn of low battery) and many believed that in that case, they'd carry a spare battery and/or an SPG in their save a dive kit but NOT on the dive itself. Sorry for the long post, curious to know your thoughts? :)
@jameshuke354
@jameshuke354 Год назад
I always check my gas pressure on my SPG as part of my buddy checks. If the valve isn't fully open you can tell as the needle will fluctuate (while this won't be apparent with a computer + transmitter). While the valve shouldn't be closed, it's a good extra check. SPG usually then gets ignored for the rest of the dive.

Theoretically, yes you can ask the dive shop to connect your AI transmitter to a rental regulator. Problem is a lot of rental regulators only have one HP port, which means you'd have to remove the SPG, and even when using AI you're not supposed to dive without an SPG.

@Yggdrasil42 Год назад
That used to be the case but in recent years I see most people choose to bring either an SPG or a transmitter but not both. Transmitters have proven their reliability enough it seems. At this point bringing both is increasing your potential failure point due to more o-rings.

Hi @Scubavery Yeah, it's a struggle. Scuba diving is usually about twenty years behind any other sports/technology industry. They're just now starting to figure out social media strategizing. It's painful to watch. I had a meeting (two years ago) with the Global Marketing Director for one of the four biggest SCUBA manufacturers who told me he thought RU-vid was where his daughter watches videos of cats playing piano. Global Marketing Director. Cats. Pianos. You Tube. I had to politely explain that it is where 85% of his potential customers go to search for product reviews before making any purchase of over $50. He was astounded. And then took no action.

When your an instructor, you can make your standards higher than the agency requirements. Any smart PADI instructor will have a higher standard following that accident. Most agencies don’t have a high enough standards for my liking. Eg, number of dives makes no sense. A diver test makes more sense. Digital gauges are more accurate than standard gauges. Traditional gauges typically read 20 bar higher but have no batteries that can die.

Hang on.... If Linnea had done the PADI dry-suit course before donning one incorrectly and believing the BS they fed her BECAUSE SHE HADN'T DONE THE COURSE, she might still be alive today. It is perhaps unfair to criticise PADI for one of their franchises ignoring their course structure when the whole point is that the structure is there for a reason. PADI stepped up and shouldered some of the liability given that the shop where the dodgy decision making and lies originated was operationally one of their franchises, but without someone there looking over their shoulder ALL the time you don't know how they are operating when you are not there. Linnea made so many poor decisions as well as the divemaster in charge, I feel that she was also responsible in some respects because there were so many red flags there that even a basic open water diver should have questioned the information they were giving her as being a no go. That is not to say that the people involved in her death shouldn't bear responsibility for their part in it as they were the legally responsible parties and 'professionals' on site.
