Lobtailing or Tail Slapping This involves lifting the tail out of the water and then slapping the surface, often quite forcefully in a belly or ventral-down position. If the whale is on its back (dorsal-down), it is called an inverted lobtail. Others have found that it may be a way for the whales to cool down in hot waters, by exposing their tails to wind. In any case, it's a stunning reminder that there's still a lot to learn about these gorgeous mammals. Offshore, a whale tail pokes above the water surface, where it stands motionless for minutes on end. No need to panic! This is a behaviour called tail sailing, a posture that, though rarely observed, is not abnormal. This behaviour is often seen in females accompanied by their calves.
@@danieltaylor6253 I have heard many whales, but they do not bother us since they are in their habitat. There are many noisy humans and he also gets too close, if something happens to him he will blame the whale.
wish this comment was higher up so people could understand what she's doing rather than top comments just making fun of the guy for his choice to go in a clear kayak.
Right !!! What an idiot she warning you dunski. She is about to slap your ass back to reincarnate and try at life again ...... 🤦Redo , do over, 8 lives left 1up From the aerial view, You kind of look like a large fly buzzing around and she's about fly swatter you 😆 But what do I know. Whalers use to row boat out in the open ocean away from the ship and harpoon these massive creatures and ride the ride till the whale tire and die.....
@@krank8385 I think Aussies are the finest people I have ever met. I used to travel with a monster truck company putting on shows in the US. One year the owner of the company said we were going to tour Australia and I had the time of my life. I don't think I had to pay for a single drink the entire month we were in your fine country. Everyone was so friendly it made me want to live there....lol.
@@TjnosaurusRex They don't need to. A blue whale can kill you with heart beat if you aren't protected properly. It's the same reason people freak out about gorilla's at the zoo. It doesn't matter if they aren't trying to cause damage, they're massive and can hurt you anyway. Also, while technically not true whales, Orcas absolutely attack.
I don’t know what’s scarier, the whales tale getting ready to slap down at any second or the amount of faith you’re putting in that tupperware you’re floating in 💀💀💀
You 'think' its a whale's tail? There's NOTHING else it could be with the exception of a sculpture of a whale's tail floating in tbe middke of the ocean. That would be extremely awesome to see!
He's not in the middle of the ocean alone💀 there was a video where there's a boat not to far from him. He really just paddles a distance away an sets up base operations 🧘🏻♂️
@@TYLERSWIFTSWORD orcas aren't that bad if the whales are also in a pod, and we as humans shouldn't hunt them honestly, but I'll say humans are more predators of whales if anything tbf
Well, if they are provoked (or not) they could attack boats too, just few weeks ago near botany bay (Sydney) a man died from the boat getting attacked by whale
I love how the dude instantly thought "it's acting that way because of my transparent kayak" It's hilarious, like the whale saw a transparent kayak and instantly went upside down, like some kind of cartoon ostrich hiding it's head in the ground
Not to mention if this is really a nature moment with a whale and his baby this has to be the worst time for him to get this close. Now if this is a "MATRIX" moment he caught on camera than he needs a award. And if he did we need to know if he made it back to land without "Mysteriously" vanishing.

“The whale with the extended flukes is most likely a female humpback with a newborn calf. The mother is resting while still allowing her calf access to her mammary glands (located near the posterior portion of her body some 6-8 feet from her flukes). By extending her tail into the air she is able to keep her body relatively close to the surface, allowing her to rest while minimizing dive depths for her young calf. The calf is then able to nurse at will and expend less energy.” From Maui Now’s page
@@2uppa507 You might be right. I've seen the Orcas in person & their tales are much larger in reality v/s photos/video's. But now that I'm re-watching it does look like a humpback.

Dude caught something that scientist have seen only a few times on camera. Whales will either sleep like this or nose up a bit deeper in the water. I could only assume mom's doing it this way cause she's got her baby with her. Add on: I am no whale expert. I know very basic of these creatures. Some comments below are saying it's something different(which I looked up). It could be any number of things. The only videos I've seen of whales doing this, is from people saying that its a mother who has a fresh calf. Mainly because a fresh calf would still be working on it's breathing while also needing to feed. I assumed sleeping because of how long it seems to be holding the position, I could be wrong to. Some people are saying it's lobbing(which I doubt do to the tail not being brought back down. Lobbing is when the tail is raised and brought down hard), some tail sailing(which is highly likely. They do this to basically act like a sail boat. Wind pushes them thru the water and it helps cool them down. And is still a rarely seen thing.), some dead (though dead position would be a lot more limp in the water. It only floats for a few days before sinking. Apperently the smell is God awful, this guy made no comment on any smell so I highly doubt death. Unless it's freshly dead..) From what I have looked up, their brain is (assumed) to be 50/50 when sleeping. There is still lacking research to properly know for sure how, when, and where a whale sleeps. Until proper brain scans can be done on a sleeping whale (which could be severely damaging to the creature, depending on what is used) there isn't a real way to tell what exactly is going on.
@@sabinakoka7967 actually, whales "sleep" is more like dozing or rest. Scientist say they basically keep one eye open at all times. So the baby may be looking for danger, but could also just be acting like a baby that doesn't want to sleep. And would rather play.
