Hello, welcome back to another video! For this week's train trip report, we will be taking a look at the brand-new Class 397 electric units in operation with TransPennine Express.
These trains were built by CAF in Spain, as part of their Civity family, making them closely related to the Class 195 and Class 331 units in service with Northern. This fleet operates on the train services between Edinburgh/Glasgow and Manchester Airport, via Carlisle, Preston, Bolton, and Manchester Piccadilly.
At the time of filming, these units were in service for a little over a month, so I took advantage of their limited service to try them out, and was pleasantly surprised with what I found.

Wow! A carriage where the seats line up with the windows - there’s a lesson for Hitachi! Yes a good looking train - another lesson for Hitachi. Great livery. Pity about the seats - a rather important part of the train. Thanks for sharing.

Hitachi have nothing to do with seating arrangements thats down to the operators design. Same with aircraft the airline operators choose and design how the interior looks before they order and begin manufacturing of the planes. Also the Azuma looks beautiful?

Always put a smile on my face seeing these pass through Bolton, for me the best looking units in the UK by miles. Only done as far as Preston so far due to my Carlisle trip being covid cancelled, but on the whole I enjoy them (seats being the only downside)

Fantastic units, Done one myself from Manchester Piccadilly - Haymarket. Don't mind the seats and found them comfortable. Issue with them, Like with the 195s/331s, the small wheels pick up every detail in the track hence you get a rough ride

I found the 195 to be quite smooth but had the worst seating I've ever sat in at first I thought everyone was overreacting but like 20 mins in my neck starts aching

Awesome class 397 they look very good design and the new TPE livery suits all the units they ordered im suprisised they have the same seats as the 800 series but just slightly more padding I do hope to try these later this year or next year great trip report as always superalbs

All new 125mph or higher trains will have the Fainsa Sophia seating featured Ehre, since from what I’ve heard they’re the only ones approved for 125mph operation

Unfortunately it's the exact same seat! :( Rumour has it there is a different design coming soon for a few upcoming orders, I look forward to anything else except the terrible seat they currently use.

To be fair the 802 looks to have the best standard class seats I haven't been on the nova 2 or 3 so I can't say for sure but the nova 1 was comfy had a look at first class which was disappointing should have the same seats as the nova 2/3 or 185 first class seats

It does look impressive externally, possibly the best looking trains of this decade. I'm not sure about the interior though, it seems quite dark and cramped but that may just be an illusion caused by the camera lens. Looks like there wasn't provision for a rubbish cupboard either. The seats on most recent trains leave a lot to be desired. The days of seats to the standard of Express Sprinters (classes 158 and 159) are long gone.

The camera seems to make it look a little dark, they’re actually really nice on board, not too bright like the AT300s but not too dim like the Pendolinos. I seem to remember there being a reasonable number of bins of a decent size, although I haven’t been on one for many months now. The seats are, AFAIK, the only ones approved by the Government for 125mph trains

It seems as though CAF just whacked the same suspension in these trains as they did in their Mk5 coaches; they seem to have the same rattle. Still, looks like a good train though. Great video!

They’re of very similar construction, which makes sense since they’re all intercity trains. I’ve heard the Mk5s have started to bed in over time, I’ve certainly noticed an improvement with the Northern Civity units since their introduction, but I haven’t been able to experience the TPE units again since lockdown began to say if there’s been any improvement

The trouble with any delay in the timetable is that all the other trains still have their timetables to keep - it becomes a nightmare for the signallers and control staff, to thread the delayed service through, and try to make up time.

I like to think of transpenine as an express version of northern and the new nova trains suit that well as opposed to the old class 185 which really made it look like a commuter network and it didn’t visually look different from northern, I don’t really know why they ever had 185s before, you’d think they would’ve had HSTs back in the day but then again HSTs are IMO for really long distances while the new 802s are quite adaptable and can be used for long intercity and medium distance regional systems, I actually quite like the new 800/801/802 family, a bit like the HST they are starting to be used everywhere and they may get boring but for now they are wonderful!

Great video mate. I love the TPE class 397 I think he's from Edinburgh Waverley and a train fault on this train is not that bad. Is nice that you were try to see if this train have some few legroom to sit down and u think is comfortable. Some TPE to the airport from Scotland can call at Bolton but doesn't call at Wigan North Western. Next can you travel on a Hull Trains class 802/2s pls.

That is beautiful inside and out. I love the design. Slight sci-fi vibe, but like you said, not overly bright, and the design is functional. Too bad about the seats.

Used one last week from Carlisle to Bolton, you summed everything very well, only comment is that the ride quality hasn't improved (nor the seats). Can't put it down to track quality as the northbound Pendolino the previous day from Wigan was much smoother. Used a Freedom of the North West Rover like you.

The through platforms (13 & 14) were rebuilt in the 1960s, there had been a link between Manchester Oxford Road & London Road (as Piccadilly was then) since the mid 19th century. And please leave captions up long enough to be able to read then.

Great video as always. A shame about the seating - seems to be a fairly common complaint about the new trains. The new Class 700 Thameslink train seats are terribly uncomfortable. Whenever I see luggage racks at carriage ends it reminds me of an experience at Milan Central in 2014 when we had to stand guard by our luggage until the train departed for Basel due to gangs of thieves on the platform who hop onboard and steal the suitcases. Has since made me very nervous about putting any luggage in these racks.

Regarding the clunky suspension, didn't CAF build the MK5 sleeper carriages too? They apparently suffer the same issue.

Yes, they did. Hopefully, they’ll end up similar to the new Northern units, which have started to bed in now they’ve been in service for nearly a year

I heard that the rubbish seats in these trains, and the class 800 variants is down to health and safety, rather han than the more obvious motive of saving money. On that basis, it would be interesting to know how seat comfort in first class compares to say HST first class seats.

Thanks for the comment! I see little merit in doing a video on a Class 345, at the end of the day they are just a big boring pipe with a few solid seats. Reviewing metros doesn't hold too much interest to me unfortunately, unless they are particularly notable. Never say never though! First class on a Class 397 though, that would be a nice trip to do. :)

I'd say the seats on the train are fine, I've heard some people say they're pretty decent. I'm not saying you're in the wrong, but I've heard people say that. I haven't actually ridden this train, so I haven't tried out the seats. Also, this train actually goes 125 mph in service (precisely north of Preston), despite the fact that they don't tilt.

I just choose the routes that have the most interesting trains, or if there's anywhere in particular I want to go, I will try and find an interesting route to get there. :)

I do like what CAF have done by manufacturing 12 5-Car Class 397 Civity Nova 2 EMUs that has replaced the 4-Car Class 350/4 Siemens Desiro EMUs that have been cascaded to West Midlands Trains. Such brilliant wonderful new trains for Northwest England and West Coast Main Line. Wouldn't mind if CAF could of built these for East Midlands Railway but instead Hitachi are to manufacture the AT300 Class 810 IETs. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_Rail_Class_397

I couldn’t agree more. CAF are still continuing on manufacturing the Class 196 West Midlands Railway and Class 197 Transport for Wales Civity DMUs. 1) There are physical forms you can fill out and hand in, however it’s easier to claim online at their website, you just need a photo of your ticket and to fill out your journey details 2) The interior colour scheme is actually really nice in person, it’s not bright and in-your-face, without being boring either, which gives the train a nice overall feel to it 3) Most services should have an on board trolley, however it may not always be able to get through due to overcrowding

These 397s seem to be lumbered with same ride quality issues as the 195/331s, I really want to like them, but that bumpy ride is so bad, and the seats are genuinely horrible

Those seats are used on the short distance trains in the Netherlands and they are horrible. Even if you have to go three stations which takes something like 15 minutes you’ll already get a sore back. And you guys are lucky because you get fabric seat covers but we have some sort of fake sticky leather.

Crappy and crunchy suspension AGAIN as with all new trains. Nothing like the older trains all the new ones are replacing throughout the UK. Quality is cheap. Noisy and totally unfit for the job. I can't travel on any trains in the UK now as between London and Yorkshire the 800's break my back and the noise is a headache after just 30 minutes. I am now back to my car.
