Nice! Good to know there are options out there. I really wanted to highlight in this video how to keep this really simple and not use any extra gear. Of course everyone's context is different and I'm glad you found a decent workaround.

Hopefully you have your homestead 🥳. But if not and you have a backyard, you could get started small scale. Even 1/20 acre would produce large amounts of greens and veggies and start your skill building.

The little stick that came with my measuring tape broke a while ago. I am using a small piece of rebar.

Yes, I have considered all of the options. I would have atleast buy the spreader frame, bars, chains and a bunch of trays. I think the dibbler would be very helpful as well. I already have all of the gear that works for me at the moment. It's also super simple. Context is everything. For the size of my farm and the amount of transplanting I do, it's just not worth it for me right now.

I don't have very many slugs so I can't really give you any advice. Sorry.

Vanderlynden Jengold I’m in PAC NW and I can’t grow lettuce due to slugs. They rove in gangs. I just recently found though that I can bait them effectively with chicken feed that’s been watered a bit. Couple handfuls will attract dozens to that spot then hit them with a salt shaker. Works after dark when they come out to feed.

Ducks! Such a wonderful help - also in the PNW, and I grew a ton of lettuce this year. We let the ducks free range and clear the garden areas before we got started. HUGE HELP! Learned in further reading their poo, draws the slugs so, if you had them housed near your gardens, it would help draw them away. Also, wood chips on the slugs soft bodies aren't so nice, we use a lot of wood chips in walkways and seems to be helping. keeping them replenished in a top dressing keeps them annoyingly prickly. But....if you do some research and understand that slugs are there to dispose of plants that are sending unhealthy s.o.s. signals (natural clean up crew) , tracking back to what Josh is saying about making certain you have really healthy starts may be your solution. We have been amending our soil for years and still boost our starts with Azomite - broad spectrum minerals that really make a difference!

There is no room for interplanting in my lettuce beds.The lettuce completely fills the bed.

DR1CHECK you plant an additional 25-40% more crop because you know your going to have uninvited dinner guests when your not looking. I know it sounds like I’m being a smart a$$ but I’m actually serious and this is what I do on my farm and I’m successful with it. It’s cheaper than putting up fences and buying other gadgets that won’t work. The deer are hungry too, you can’t blame them for trying to survive so just learn to cohabitate and life will be good! You need to understand that even if you went out and reduced the deer population by 50 on your property, 75 more will migrate into your area within a week or two so the best thing to do is just feed them. I keep a large corn pile about 100 yards from the back edge of my fields and the plan is to try and fill them up before they get to my stuff. If they do come up for Desert after they’ve had their corn , they won’t eat nearly as much as they would without the corn so I just plant extra and plan for 25% loss and it has been working great for the past 2 years. I’m probly really only averaging 10-15% loss so I’m coming out pretty good now Good luck!

To save 3 000 dollars and not rely on a company to buy new paperpots every season. For instance.

Phteven they are expensive as heck and you have to use their transplanter and their pots. Nope, ain’t happening on my farm either! And I have 10 acres I’m currently growing on and it would not make good financial sense for me either when there are better, cheaper, faster, and more comfortable options out there and I’m talking in the neighborhood of $300-$500 initial one time cost for the equipment and then you use your standard reusable trays that josh had his transplants in so you will not have a recurring charge everytime you need to flip a bed and start new plants like you would with paper pots. Those are one use pots so you always have to order a sizable quantity or order frequently and it’s an unneeded recurring waste of money when the heavy duty 1020 trays can be used for years. This works great for my farm and is a fraction of the cost of the paper pot monopoly stuff and my equipment is much heavier built and will last decades longer than the toy transplanted. Sorry, but you asked why exactly and although I can’t answer for josh but I can tell you why many other farms like myself don’t and won’t use it. Since there is only one manufacturer and you have to use their supplies then they can charge what they want and I just feel it is grossly overpriced. But that’s just my opinion and for many farms it’s a perfect tool, each farms needs vary drastically. Good luck and I hope you find a method/tool that works well for you.
