In July of 2022 three of my permaculture friends and I transplanted two large agave plants that were growing up against the side of my house in Brooksville Florida, requiring frequent trimming to keep them from stabbing my window screens. With their serrated edges and extremely sharp tips, these were not friendly plants for such a small yard.
Agave plants thrive in sunlight, and were only getting about 40-50% sun at my house. As of April 2023, the two plants are thriving on about 80% sun in their new location in Floral City, Florida!
Since I transplanted these plants, I realized that their high sugar content might make agave a good ethanol feedstock. I may still harvest some stalks and experiment, but I suspect they take too long to grow to be very productive. I will plant some spineless prickly pear in my yard to see how productive those are as ethanol feedstock.
