If you have an agave, sooner or later you'll deal with a bloom that signals the end of its life. The flower stalk can be a bonanza if you're into propagation. Otherwise, it’s a fascinating manifestation that also may cause problems.
In this video and in the corresponding article on my site, you'll find expert advice that includes dead-agave removal and cautions, plus 20+ agaves in bloom (to help you ID yours and know what to expect), and how to start new plants from seeds and bulbils.

From the stalk to harvesting the seeds? I did do a seed-starting video with nurseryman/grower Aaron Ryan several years ago at Succulent Gardens nursery. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Ecpchjuy1fM.htmlsi=jGkRVOZNL3y9Unau Thing is, most agaves are super easy to start from pups and bulbils, so seeds tend to be "why bother?" But I realize not every agave can be propped vegetatively, nor is everyone able to access mature plants in order to harvest offsets. I'm acquainted with breeders, and will see what I can do to fill the gap. Thanks for asking!

@@QueenofSucculentsExcellent, thank you so much. You see I am not a stay at home gardener. I travel for a living. I happened to be traveling through the Texas Canyon in the Sonoran Desert and I noticed these incredible plants. I had to stop and take a picture and try and research until I might discover what these symmetrical beautiful flowers on stalks were. I ask a few gardeners I know and I looked up native plants of Sonora desert. Then after I felt closer to an identification I wanted to walk around one to see if I could find any pieces lying around I could take for a positive identification. This started an entire love affair with this Mescal Agave.

@@QueenofSucculentsI couldn’t dig up pups at the time because the plants didn’t belong to me and I was simply fascinated with learning everything I could about them. From my experience traveling the entire United States.. I hadn’t noticed these in any other locations. Recently, I have discovered a few in California. I started to investigate the possibility of growing a few in the Mojave desert in my yard. This started my search for growing a few plants from these seed pods I found on the ground around the plants as the season moved on. It took several months for the pods to naturally split open to send the seeds into the wind. I kept the seeds in envelopes with the location, date collected and specific plant gps coordinate. I am interested to revisit next year to see the offspring. I have a dozen sprout pots going now at home in the Mojave desert. Thank you so much for your link. I will watch it after meetings today.

These plants are gorgeous and I had one in my yard that was probably 3‘ x 3 or 4 feet, but I sold that house and I wanted another one since then so I frequently travel through the Texas Canyon in Arizona, where they grow natural wild and I see them in bloom right now And there are some areas that I could walk out and shake the stocks and maybe harvest some pods but I don’t really understand the process of extracting this feed from the hot sun of the pods are brown and dried up. Some of them seem to of popped open and their seeds are already gone and the pods are Like a fruit or a green type pear and then there are also times that are brown and dried up and closed and then there are pods that have open and there is hardest wood Ranboo and the seeds are gone from those, so I don’t see any pot around the plant so I wanted to harvest some of the seed pods but I didn’t know if checking the stock and having the pods phone lol I’m trying to harvest seeds from that would be successful or not

Debra, Thank you for your kind reply. I used talk to text because I am a driver. I read my question and realized it did’t make much sense. My apology. I will try again.. ty.. i found a huge 40 foot stalk half pods dropped off or open.. so i picked up some off the ground and i shook the stalk to see if anymore would fall off. I collected a few dozen pods. Now a week later the green pods that were the size of my thumb have now turned dark brown and appear to be drying. I believe it is a Century Plant (Agave). What would my next step be to harvest seeds? Do i wait for pods to burst open themselves?
@QueenofSucculents
@QueenofSucculents 5 месяцев назад
Yes, you can wait until the pods open on their own, or until they feel and look dry, and rattle when shook.

Last October, a neighbor gifted me a dozen tiny Octopus Agave bulbils. I have them planted in pots in an inside holding area. About how long will it take for them to mature enough to be planted outside? It sure seems like they are growing very slowly... Thanks in advance!

You want them to have established roots then they can be planted outside as long as you climatise them slowly to the sun.

This is so interesting! We planted blue agave and Caribbean agave about 5 years ago. Today I noticed a flower spike in the large Caribbean agave that is in our sunny hot South West Florida garden. We head north in a few weeks so I doubt we will see the whole process. I wonder if any babies will be present when we come back in 6 months? Should we leave it be or saw off the stalk? Thanks
@QueenofSucculents
@QueenofSucculents 2 года назад
If you cut the bloom stalk of Agave angustifolia back as far as you can now, before you leave, the plant will probably look fine when you get back. It's one of the few agaves (that I'm aware of) that doing this delays its death.

I have two agaves blooming now. The first to go was the last of our three octopus agaves, which will give us lots of babies. The second is a dasylirion (is this the same as an agave gemini.... featured in this video? looks exactly the same). I was not expecting that one to go. I've had a time lapse camera on it for the past 3 weeks or so.

Aloes are perennial, meaning they bloom yearly. Agaves are monocarpic, meaning they bloom once in their lifetime.

I have a friend that had a agave plant that bloomed and died off. They gave me seed pods that are still green? Did they cut them too soon? Are the pods good to allow the seeds to dry properly inside? How do I propagate the seeds? I appreciate any help with my questions as I do want to plant the seeds but don't know if they are still good or green inside and don't want to cut the pods while green if I shouldn't. Thank you.
@QueenofSucculents
@QueenofSucculents Год назад
The pods need to be mature for the seeds to have the best chance. Set them aside and let them dry, and if they split open, they may be viable. If they wither and don't open, probably not. If you have plenty, you have nothing to lose by experimenting: Go ahead and open some pots and plant the seeds, and let a few others dry before doing so.
