King's Birthday Weekend in June 2024, Garratt locomotive 6029 and Diesel 4501 crossed the Blue Mountains to spend the long weekend giving locals (and interstate visitors) the chance to ride behind the largest running steam locomotive in the Southern Hemisphere. The one-hour long journey ascends the famous Tumulla bank, a five kilometre stretch of steep curves upon steep curves, a Mecca for steam enthusiasts from all over.
I was so glad to see 6029 in steam, the first time since I last saw her in 1972 working between Fassifern and Newcastle.
