This amount of time between when the trap was thrown and the bird was caught is pretty common for this kind of trapping. Truthfully, I think the bird should have been caught quicker but our trap is not the greatest. What is not shown however is what happens before the trap is thrown. This bird was trapped the first day, almost first hour searching for a bird, which was really lucky. My last bird, Pete, I probably spent a full week and drove at least 1,000 miles trying to find and trap a suitable bird. So, to fully answer the question, a bird needs to be located, then identified as an adult or immature (In most cases falconers can only keep immature birds), trap thrown (it is never out of our sight), and if it's caught the bird is collected as quickly and safely as we can.

Why don't the birds fly away when you approach them? Are their talons caught in the wire of the rodent holder? Then also, when you get to them and cover them (I guess that's what you do, couldn't really see), anyway, Why don't they struggle to escape? Just asking strictly out of curiosity; I don't want to catch anything! But I do have one on my land that sits atop a utility pole every morning watching the little birds that come to get water in my bird bath. I sit and watch him her watching them! Fascinating.

Mz No Skills Living Singular in the Desert you can’t trap a hawk without a falconry liscence which requires passing a test and so much more. Also this type of trap I believe is the bal chatri which is a wire cage with bait inside and small nooses on top. When the hawk comes down and tries to get the bait inside the cage, it gets stuck in the nooses on top and that’s why it can’t get away

Hey I made a bal chatri trap and put a white mouse in it. So far I seen one hawk inspect it but he didnt fly onto the cage. Instead he flew elsewhere. How do I camoflauge my trap to blend in for a better catch rate?

Are you in the United States? If so, you need to ask your sponsor to help you or stop. It is a felony to trap native birds without a license. If you don't know what you are doing you can injure yourself or wildlife.

Falconry Uncut very true. What I did with my trap was spray paint it black, green, and brown to blend in better but only trap a hawk if you are a liscenced falconer!!!!

It was an older model garmin virb zip tied to that piece of wood. It's the same camera I use in most of my videos, but I hope to get something with higher resolution next season. Thanks for watching!

This video is damaging to the sport of falconry. What you are showing here gives fuel to those that would see falconry and wild raptor take banned in our country. For the sake of the sport, please remove this video from youtube.

I understand your viewpoint and I did see that my video at the top when I read that nafex thread. I don't disagree that showing how to capture raptors could be damaging to raptors, but I disagree that my video is damaging to the sport. I am not embarrassed to say that we take raptors out of the wild. It's a cornerstone of the sport. Hiding that I believe is disingenuous, and only adds to the general publics ignorance. I sometimes do educational talks and I have only used wild caught birds for that. I am not going to lie and say my red-tail was chamber raised, I am going to explain how the bird was taken safely and humanely out of the wild and given a better chance during it's first year. I believe it would be more damaging to hide what we do and let the tradition die through attrition, due to the low number of people joining the sport. I don't think it would be controversial to say that this is mostly an older guy sport. If people don't know that hunting through falconry exists, it will stop existing. That's just my opinion. This video for some reason gets a decent amount of views so I will try to link some studies about wild take in the description for people that care.

So ask yourself "why post this"? To what end? What you are showing is not difficult, it is not new, nor is the content of the video educational in any way. Licensed falconers that want to trap a redtail on a BC will have absolutely no trouble pulling it off without this video. So what you are doing here falls into either 1) you make money off the views 2) you are feeding your own ego with "look at me" footage. What you show here is mediocrity. The video has no benefit to falconry and only serves to piss off folks that have a predisposition to being offended by captured hawks. Showing high quality falconry in a way where people can understand the purpose, the beauty, the symbiotic nature of the hunting relationship - that is what you should strive for. And that is not "hiding" - it is being smart.

>Licensed falconers that want to trap a redtail on a BC will have absolutely no trouble pulling it off without this video. Licensed falconers have no trouble hunting with their bird either, but there are plenty of videos on that too. This video is not just for falconers. >1) you make money off the views I actually just turned on monetization. I've made essentially $0. Any money I make in the future will go right back into these videos. >2) you are feeding your own ego with "look at me" footage I'm actually a little disappointed that this video is my most viewed, and not the Pete Feat video that I spent actual time to make. Most of my hunting videos get 20 views, hardly an ego boost. I make videos because it is fun and I like to share the sport. > Showing high quality falconry in a way where people can understand the purpose, the beauty, the symbiotic nature of the hunting relationship - that is what you should strive for. Trapping is part of the sport, so I've shown it. I think it's important to show the beginning of a falconry birds journey. The first question that is asked anyway is "Where did you get that bird?", followed by "Does it bring the rabbit back to you?" If someone wanted to take trapping away from us, it would not be difficult to look up the regulations, check the forums, websites, or other resources wildly available to see how we do it. Facts are that wild take has no measurable effect on wild population, even if all 5,000 of us took 2 birds every year. I will post a source on that in the description. What people do with their feelings about wild take is not something anyone can control. I've posted a video showing that from start to finish a red tail was trapped in under 5 minutes using a technique that does no harm to the bird or the bait. This shows that we do not just leave traps lying about checking them once a day, but are right there to keep the bird safe and stress levels low. I know I will not change your view. I've written all of this to inform viewers, just like I've posted this video to inform viewers of falconry. Good luck on your season.
