It looks like I'll get the opportunity to trap pollen this season, unlike last year when we had a terrible drought. As long as the rain keeps showing up here and there, it's surprising how much pollen the bees keep bringing in during the summer dearth. I have three different types of traps and I plan to use two of them, if not all three. Let take a look at what I have and how I install one of the,

Looks like a nice crop of honey we having this year. I made two pulls and put the boxes back on the hive to let the bees clean them up , but they started putting nector in, they getting it from somewhere cause the taloe is finish.

Same here. Put a super on and knew the tallow was done and yet nectar was going in. At the same time, I’m trying to get supers put away a little at a time. Hoping I don’t overcrowd them😬😬😬. Take care Brad!!

Interesting stuff Mike. I have never really trapped much pollen. Do you have any full sized Apimayes? I tried out the traps on those one time for a couple of days just to see and they are very effective. One day maybe I need to look into it more. But as you said there is this thing called time…and not enough of it. It is amazing what seemingly average to small sized swarms can do. Sometimes they blow up and do incredible things. Love the new camera but especially the mic. Sound is crystal clear. DJI has it figured out!

Thanks for the comment Bruce. I am looking to get and Apimaye full size hive so I can use the pollen trap on it and I’m hoping to pick up a couple more 7 frame units when I look at the expo specials. So far I’m liking the camera. Just need to get the wanting software to cooperate better. I think I finally got the performance back up on it.

A little off the current subject BUT we met in Louisville this past January and visited a while. I'm from SE Missouri. Wanting to thank you for the video you produced discussing how you set up your swarm traps. I've always used plastic foundation some old drawn some wax coated new. You shared that you use a beeswax strip along with an old drawn comb. Tried that this season and had fantastic results. Swarm bees truly like the wax strips. And it's a little cheaper to do. Caught 17-swarms thus far and feel like it has a lot to do with your suggestion about the beeswax strips. Thanks and look forward to watching all your videos. David Childers

With heat and humidity come the beetles. Almost time to break out the Beetle Sucker 5000 🙂. Great video. I may need to start pollen trapping.

Yea, they’re livers of the heat for sure. I’ve seen a lot less this season and I have to believe the harsh cold snaps we had knocked back the pupae production, but July and August will tell the whole story. We shall see. I have the vac on standby. 😬😬

I sure hope to follow thru with some videos on it. It’s a process, but the pollen sells out fast and folks always ask when I’ll have more, so I need to grow that particular side of the bees as well.

Like honey, I'm assuming pollen varies based on the time of year that it is collected.
@MikeBarryBees
@MikeBarryBees 3 месяца назад
Yes it does. I’m seeing dark brown right now and then in fall the bright yellow and mustard colors will come in and just like golden rod honey, it smells pretty rough😂😂. In the spring we get the whites, reds, light yellows, and then the greens. All vary in how healthy they are. Some are more healthy than others. I need to be collecting in the spring next year.

Mr. Barry you have to extract that and let the queen lay. You need a lot of brood so bees have a reason to bring pollen. I'm so lucky I don't have hive beetles. Right now I have a lot of queens in cages for brood breaks. And as the brood emerges that box gets full of pollen.. l don't think I could do that with hive beetles. Sorry Mike it confuses me.. l always think Barry is your name
@MikeBarryBees
@MikeBarryBees 3 месяца назад
Yea, I agree. I’m usually never installing them this early, because our queens will naturally slow down in the next two weeks and because I don’t normally begin harvesting until July. But the queens do normally slow way down soon Unless we feed and supply pollen sub, and I usually don’t. So what I normally do is install them toward the end of summer, or at least I want to. But I’m always late and miss about three weeks of pollen as they grow back up for winter. This year I want to install on the hives that I’m not really counting on for honey or that I have supers on so that come the growth phase, all I have to do is drop the door. I did drop the door this past weekend to gauge what’s going on and I got a little bowl of pollen. It it’ll be shutting down very soon. I get that a lot with my name. With my middle name, I basically have three first names😂😂

@@MikeBarryBees l can't do it in summer. It gets so dry that everything stops. Even the bees stop flying. So l collect spring pollen and propolis in August and October. But I pay attention to not overdo it. Propolis is difficult on bees.. people are asking for it.. l can sell everything here. Even the jelly. There's a market for venom but I can't make myself start it. Too much gadgets and dangerous if you get it on a cut or wound...

Mike , love your content. Got a question I’m in southern miss and we haven’t seen any hummingbirds this year. Have you heard any reason why ?? And are the bees being affected also?
@MikeBarryBees

We didn’t see any until late down here, and have only seen the one. Usually we see them much sooner. I don’t know that the bees are being affected. Things seem pretty normal or average with the bees that I can tell. Thanks so much for watching and glad you enjoy the videos!

Hello Mike I had been looking at pollen traps last year an looking an looking but I ended up getting the yellow one like you had . The problem was all my hives are eight frames well the most are . The ones I got were all ten frame traps so I had to do some work on my boxes to get them to work an they turned out ok . With the yellow traps I found the collection tray wants to fall out real easy so I ended up putting a string around it to tie the tray in . I was wanting the Sundance style but for the price I went with the yellow ones . Have a good week. Thanks
@MikeBarryBees
@MikeBarryBees 3 месяца назад
Sounds like you did some beekeeper engineering. I have to agree on the price thing. The Sundance traps are way over priced. I bought it to see if I could do some reverse engineering and then gave up that idea. John Pluta showed how to make them and there are plans on the net, but I hate building stuff, so I bought the cheaper Mann lake and the two of the yellow ones.

Hey Mike, like seeing your pollen collection methods. I tried the plastic model wasn’t a fan, this year I bought two different traps at the expo one was the Sundance the problem I had with it seemed like they propalized the door shut. I also bought a couple from dancing bear l liked them their made something like the Mann lake but without the tubes just my thoughts check them out. Thanks for sharing

WHEN BOTH DEEP ARE HONEY BOUND HOW MANY FRAMES DO I NEED TO EXTRACT AND REPLACE
@MikeBarryBees

If it were me I’d try to get at least 8 open frames in the bottom. If there is still nectar coming in, I’d add 4 to the top as well.

My screen bottom board (with oil pan) seems to be acting like a pollen trap, except the pollen is floating in oil. I like the screen bottom board for beetle control, but the amount of pollen the bees are losing is crazy. I need a solution.
@MikeBarryBees
@MikeBarryBees 3 месяца назад
Well, I’ve gotten to where I replace any screen bottoms with solids these days. So I’m probably not the best person to ask, but I see that in my screen bottoms, but I really think the amount you see isn’t as significant as it looks. When the pollen trap is running, there is SO MUCH pollen that is coming in, that the stuff I see on the boards under the screens is not much at all. I would bet 95% of the pollen is getting in to where it needs to. Bees regularly lose pollen when going thru the hive. Just part of there day.
