It's best to release all the raccoons you trap about the same time into the same area. They form family groups which helps their survival.

HI @NancyColpetzer-tq6te . Thanks for the comment. Absolutely! Anytime we catch raccoons or groundhogs, we always keep them together. In fact, we always release them in the same wooded area. There' probably a whole Lord of the Flies thing going on in that wooded area, lol. This summer in one night, we caught a family of (4) raccoons and we let them go in the same area, one after another. You can check out the video here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-dCwxXIJKKp8.htmlsi=gu-NzZ5_6bPIrVTy . Thanks for watching! Jackie and Dan

Thanks! Although my pitchforks are curved, but I like the idea of the clamp. Another guy had a piece of baling twine to open the door, and a door stop to hold the little lever on top open. All good ideas.

Hi @debbiecurtis4146 . Thanks for the comment. Glad you liked the video. Yes, using a clamp definitely makes things easier. I just uploaded another video about 1/2 hour ago where I caught a whole family of raccoons in one night. You can see how I release them. You can check out that video here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-dCwxXIJKKp8.html . Thanks for watching! Jackie & Dan

Marshmallows work great.

Hi @jamespowers650 . Thanks for reaching out to us. We're actually going to be trying to trap some groundhogs this weekend. We'll try the marshmallows and see if we get any raccoons. If we have any success, we'll be sure to call out your handle in a short video. :-) Thanks for watching! Jackie & Dan

@@jdgardensnj4563 I use a big marshmallow and use a bread twisty or hobby wire to fasten the sugar treat to the bottom of the live trap just forward of the trip plate. That way they cannot just grab and run . They will still consume the marshmallow after being confined. Used this on many coon but not wood chucks.

Where can I find a straight pronged pitch fork like you are using?
@jdgardensnj4563
@jdgardensnj4563 3 месяца назад
Hi @cindyrobinette2322 . Sorry for the delayed response. Thanks for the comment. When you purchase one of the traps from Havahart, they usually come with a simplified version of that pitchfork. As far as the one that I used in the video, with the long handle, that's one that I made myself. I have been planning on making a new one, so maybe I'll make an instructional video. Just one note, I did use a flux welder so not sure if you have one of those. But keep an eye out for the video. Thanks for watching! Jackie & Dan

I guess I will make a cover out of cardboard or an old campaign sign made out of corrugated plastic

Hi @lydiaahubbell8545 . Thanks for reaching out to us. I would not recommend using cardboard or using any kind of soft material like blankets or towels, especially when trapping raccoons. Raccoons are very good with their hands. They reach out and tear into anything. Years ago I used an old towel and he tore it to shreds and pulled the fabric into a bunch of the little squares in the trap. Took me forever to clean up. The cover that I use it made out of a hard plastic that they can't tear into. Thanks for watching! Jackie and Dan

I have two different sturdy traps but somehow Raccoons managed to escape multiple times. They get away from the very corner bottom of the doors. Any suggestions?

Hi Moe: Raccoons are certainly clever critters. Once I did have one get out of the trap, he was probably a big sucker and got caught half way into the trap because he must have been thrashing around, the trap was a couple of feet away from where I left it. I use the Have a Heart traps and I've never seen them get through the door because there is a latch that drops down behind the door. What kind of trap do you use? You can check out how the Have a Heart trap works on one of my earlier videos: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-DfOUWGFji1U.html . But one thing that I learned from the one raccoon that got away, was that if I'm looking to trap raccoons or even groundhogs, I'll generally try to wedge the trap in somewhere between a tree or a shed or something, so that if they do try to move around too much, it'll limit the cage's movement. Once a critter realizes that it can't move around too much, it generally tends to calm down and won't thrash around as much. I hope this helps. Again, let me know what kind of trap you use. Thanks for watching! Jackie & Dan

@@jdgardensnj4563I have the Havahart easy set and twice I've set it & he gets in there, gets the bait and gets back out. Feeling very frustrated and tired of hearing them above my head while I'm in bed lol

If there's others, they'll help each other escape. I've seen it with my own mind. I haven't seen that raccoon that was in the trap since then... But I might have got his helper. That big one make a HUGE mess in a short time. Pulled in like over 30lbs of mud, bent the trigger plate, etc.
