Havahart 1089 Trap Assembly Instructions 

Thank you! Thought I was loosing my mind until I watched this. Just caught a kitten that was in the parking lot at work crawling into car motors and wheels for 3 days to get warm. You have saved a life.

This is absolutely WONDERFUL!! I spent about 2 hours trying to figure out the instructions that came with my cage (a #1099). Couldn't make heads or tails with the grid drawing ...no parts labeled...and one part upside-down! I watched their own video which didn't help AT ALL! So I kept searching and finally found yours. It's great that you take your time and show all angles as you're assembling it. A key difference in how you do it, is to put the trigger rod on the trigger hook FIRST - and then thread the other end through the bottom loops of the trigger pan. So, yes...this is a million times better than what they provided as instructions! Thank you for taking the time to do this.

I just got my 1099 trap and took one look at the instructions and wanted to run away from home. lol Thank goodness for people like you who do these videos, Kent! The cages are the same (1089 and 1099) so your video was exactly what I needed. I don't care in the slightest that it wasn't professionally recorded. It's a video on how to put a trap together, not a multi million dollar budget movie. ;) It was so easy to pause the video to get each step accomplished and I thought that you were very clear and easy to understand. My cage is now put together properly and I can trap the little stray girl kitty who has been on my back patio for weeks and get her spayed and all the other vet things she needs. She's very friendly and chirpy to me (and she's actually made friends with my kitty Gator who hates all other animals!) but she can't handle being touched yet so the trap was a necessity. Thank you SO much for making the video!

Perfect video? Nope. Better than the instructions? A million times better. Plus, we could actually see what each part looked like and confirmed they failed to put in the u-shaped back lock. So, thank you for your efforts.

is it easy for a cat to get out? Does it lock the door well. Its real easy to film and demonstrate if a helper or tripod is used.

I suggest a larger trap for racoons. So far the trap has caught: 1-Cat 1-Oppossum 4-Ground Squirrels 1-Weasel It's a good size for smaller pests. I have a small trap and it is useless. If in doubt, go for a larger size.

This is much better than the written instructions that came with the trap btw. Mine came out of the box with one of the sides bent a little inward. I can’t tell yet if that will affect how it works.

This video was made in 2012 before the Havahart model 1083 "easy set" trap was being made. The 1083 is a much better squirrel trap. It is much faster to bait and faster to set. If you just bought a 1089 to "self-assemble", I would send it back and get a 1083. # The Havahart # 1083 is not being stocked at any of the Lowes or Home Depots near me for some crazy reason, so you probably have to order them online. It should cost approx $35 plus shipping. # I reconfigure my # 1083 squirrel traps every morning for their intended purpose and then I put the plastic mouse traps back inside the 1083 at night. The reason I use the TomCats inside the squirrel trap is to protect other wildlife like birds from setting them off in the early AM before I wake up. Outside mice traps could also hurt other wildlife or dogs etc. # I set my plastic saw-tooth Tomcat mouse traps traps outside because if you have mice inside, that probably means you have 10 times as many outside. I found this out by accident recently when I was leaving my squirrel traps out overnight and noticed the bait was gone in the morning. Squirrels and birds are not active at night and I realized it had to be mice taking the bait. The trick to baiting traps is to spread the peanut butter in a thin layer across the entire platform. Don't just put a glob of peanut butter in the center. Don't let it get old. If it is laying around for more than a week it loses the odor and you should replace it with fresh PB. I like to put 2 traps inside of a Havahart model # 1083 squirrel trap at night. Mice are not very active (outside) during the day. Leaving outside traps set during daylight is a waste of time. Leaving squirrel traps set at night is also a waste of time # I place 2 plastic mousetraps inside each squirrel trap and some nights I catch a mouse inside each trap even though they are in very close proximity to each other. I have caught 24 mice the first month I began doing this. I had no idea there were so many mice in our suburban neighborhood !! I thought that only catching an occasional mouse inside the garage meant we were free of mice. The relatively new Havahart # 1083 "easy set" trap is the best squirrel trap by a wide margin. I only use my other older traps to catch mice now. # # I hope this advice helps someone. Bill Z Delaware County, PA

The main door locks securely. I never bothered with the back door. Nothing gets out until you let it out. I always use front main door to release the animals.

Good tutorial, but you moved your phone/camera around so much so that it actually made me a bit dizzy. It just made it a bit more difficult to follow along. However, thank you, as the instructions they sent along were a bit hard to follow, and I usually don't have difficulty reading instructions lol.

Kent, you might do better setting the camera down, recording, pick it up move it, then put it down again to record.

Just bought this trap and watched your video. Terrible. Suggestion: have someone else hold the camera!! Also, instructions were wrong.
