I used your method . The otter dug a hole under the fence . I extended the snare out from the hole about 2" . With a different wiring . "L" shaped out from the fence . Placed the snare so it hung straight up and down from the ground to the top of the bottom of the fence. The key is what you said have the snare hanging straight and flatten it out a bit to cover more area side to side. It worked! No more otter eating my fish.
Great tip Jeromy. Simple. I'm going to try a few. I make my snares a little different using camlocks and break-aways, but I'm going to try your fence method of attaching. Heck, just lifting that bottom wire up a bit is a good thought. Thanks for taking the time to share.
Thank you! Lifting up the bottom wire almost acts like a funnel to them visually I think. I’ve heard of a lot of people who swear by the cam locks, I know they are a good system too. Good luck to you this season!
@@jeromycooley-outwestadvent5790 Where are you at? I'm In Grant county Oregon. I will start putting out sets November 5th. I usually start around October 22nd, but this year the fur buyer strongly encouraged me to wait. And with the last few days of heavy rain I'm glad I did. Tight chains!!!! Les from Eastern Oregon
I’m in mostly Crook County, but I have some trap lines in Lake County, and Deschutes County. I’m going to wait for another week, or two, but I’m chomping at the bit for sure.
You make your baling wire snare support look real easy. I don't have that perfected yet. :) Fence snares are one of my favorite sets! You just have to make sure its a hole where coyotes are going through. I've probably caught close to a dozen coyotes over the last several years out of the very same hole in the fence. It's productive if its in the right place.
I agree, they are productive. Dan asked how many deer I catch in fence snares. It’s a very low percentage for me. How many deer do you unintentionally end up catching in coyote fence snares, Seems how the majority of your sets are snare related?
@@jeromycooley-outwestadvent5790 In all my years of snaring I have only caught 1 deer in a fence duck under set and 1 in a trail set. both were set at 10" or less off the ground from the bottom of the loop. I get very few non-target animals, mostly just coyotes. :)
Hey Dan! I do have some problem with the deer. I have caught two in the last 15 years. One I was able to release, and one the coyotes had eaten completely except the hair, bones and head. I check them every 48 hours. The deer usually jump the fences around here, but it does happen once in awhile. Great question!
unfortunately this is absolutely the most amateur set I have ever seen ! NEVER set in a wire fence you are asking for ripped hides and countless other scrap that is unethical!
Hmmm. I seem to have caught hundreds, and hundreds of coyotes using this set. Maybe one out of fifty has some damaged fur, but not one ripped hide. It is extremely effective and definitely any amateur can make this set. I always set every fence I can. Some states it is not legal, but my state it is. You’re definitely entitled to your opinion, but I’d be careful trying to dogmatically tell another trapper what to do on his trapline.
