Hi guys. Instead of throwing out and wasting the roughage in your peat moss simply use it to bed your trap in it. You will find as you drive around to your sets you will find that the rough stuff comes to the top of your bucket or carrying tote. Been doing this for 40 + years.
Glad to see you take the time to post. I use peat and have mixed results, but it sure does repel water . I use it and waxed dirt as the season goes on. I was amazed at the amount of stuff in peat. I even found oak leaves in there. Keep them coming Amigo
What works for me , I get the peat moss at the start of the growing season and put it in a barrel and will dry out . Be ready for the season and I only sift it when I put it over the trap after I bed the trap in it . What I mean is that after i got my stakes in the ground and have the trap open ready to set I put a layer of peat moss on the ground and then I I bed my trap , The peat moss is not sifted any sticks in the way I take them out other wise I just bed the trap in it and make sure it dose not move in any way , then I put my pan cover that is waxed paper that is under the loose jaw and then I sift the peat moss over the trap. after I get what I need . I use dry dirt over it or small stains of grass to cover it . Depending on the type of set. There is some brands of peat moss you will see it is mainly clean and do not need to do anything. Other is like in the video .This works for me . Just to give some ideas . But like in the video . Make sure your peat moss is dry before use .
Good show buddy, I always have peat ready to go and when I do use it most of the time I'm still able to sift some ground cover over it, it works for me here.
When i run out of my 5gal bucket of peat, i always sift the new peatmoss into my peat bucket. I bought a 50lb bale of peat 2yrs ago and im almost out. So i'll be purchasing more this fall.
I really like your information your SM has helped me more than you know past 5 years, my offer stands bring your moss to North Dakota my spots or find some in this area yourself, I have an extra bedroom in the basement or bring a camper, this fall I had a buddy and fellow trapper from your area.. long story short after his ride blew a head gasket I used dry peat moss that "he sifted and sun dried it" full bale 3 years old as FLOOR dry yes he was more than surprised how effective it HOLDS moisture, in ND that equals frozen traps if bedded in moss only, I do use small amounts not to bed or freeze proof its a sponge when used with wax product and I use it like that with shale, hulls, sand, etc, he brought to my attention its not the same Peat Moss he buys on the east coast? Is that true? I got mine from Lowe's. Why don't any one cover that issue? Could it end the peat moss debate?
Thanks for sharing bud I had peat moss freeze up on my I uploaded a video 2 weeks ago missed a coyote for sure foot print was half on pan half on dog..
I have trouble with my screen pan getting exposed in the rain using peat, I throw more peat on my trap and then when it freezes I’ve got a solid rock of peat….. frustrating.
I use some. Like the way it beds but my problem with it when it rains for several days then the sun comes out and starts to dry the ground you can actually see where the trap bed is because it drys much faster than surrounding ground. Most of my productive set are in corn fields along ditches.
