Traquair House - Innerleithen - Once a royal hunting lodge that played host to Mary Queen of Scots. 

Traquair House is the oldest, continuously inhabited, house in Scotland. Alexander I had a hunting lodge here, and Traquair was visited by many of the monarchs of Scotland, and some of England including Edward I and Edward II. The lands had passed to the Douglases by the 13th century, then through many other families until it was sold to the Stuart Earls of Buchan in 1478.
Mary, Queen of Scots, visited with Lord Darnley and her son, the future King James VI and I, in 1566. James Stuart, 4th Laird of Traquair, helped Mary escape from Lochleven Castle after her abdication in 1568.
The famous Bear Gates were closed by the 5th Earl of Traquair after a visit from Bonnie Prince Charlie, as a show of support for the cause. Not to be reopened until a Stuart monarch was returned to the throne of Great Britain. The Earl spent time imprisoned in the Tower of London for his Jacobite leanings.
Sir Walter Scott was a friend of the family and often visited Traquair - gaining inspiration, it is said, for some of his works.
