His Cypher was fire. "Russel Westbrook on a farm" was amazing. And the rest of his shit is hilarious. He may not be dropping bars like a circuit court judge left and right. But I havent heard anything i Don't like yet.
Rap freestyle is off the top, not the generic definition. No matter what people say freestyle in rap culture is rhyming on the fly and this was written Lil Dicky doesnt hide it just like his last time on Sway you can find the things he said in previous songs he did, the line were he brought flowers should have told you its pre written. That being said its still dope rhymes!
@@hwright85 Lol. Not one single rapper freestyles without a head full punchlines. The art is how they incorporate them. If they don't have a head full stuff they are gonna be terrible...
Ryan Henson You obviously don’t watch freestyles or you wouldn’t have said that. Sway 5 fingers of death is a prime example of raw free styling cause the beat is switched every minute and random topics are being thrown out to rap about to keep artist from using recycled punchlines.
@@hwright85 No, I've been around forever and that's not a freestyle A freestyle is when you dont have a particular subject matter and you improv with the beat. What you are talking about is literally called "off the dome".
@@hwright85 If you think any of the good punchlines and wordplay was made up on the spot and not written down or at least thought of before you are naive as fuck.
Is that a John Mullaney Reference? (In one of his Stand Ups, he mentions how Steven Tyler just has to snap his fingers and someone brings him a Diet Coke, and that being like the epitome of fame)
Foundations Medical Informatics - Mulaney actually references Mick Jagger, not Steven Tyler. But it’s possible Dicky was making a reference to John! Love his stand up.
"When I do shopping Spree Eyebrows (I browse) long like AD" is such an underrated bar to me. I feel like most people don't catch that, Lil Dicky just too nice with it.
Tyler Scott i never caught that and I’ve watched this freestyle multiple times, thanks for pointing it out. He has so many bars that I miss it’s unbelievable.
Whether it’s a freestyle or not, this is one of the cleanest flows I’ve ever heard. He changes styles and flows so effortlessly. His word play and his expressions are hilarious as well. Certainly he’s a super talented dude
Rap freestyle is when you don’t know what the beat is ahead of time and you freestyle the rhythm. Whether the words are off the top or pre-memorized is irrelevant. Off the dome is only one form of freestyles. But the bars can be pre-memorized and it’s also a freestyle. The point being, both are freestyles, because the definition of freestyling is that your freestyling the rhythm based on the beat your given. People are just confused as to what freestyle really means.
Brother. Freestyle does not mean off the top/dome. No hate. It’s a common misconception. Free style is “free of style”. There’s no real concept, you’re just spitting bars. It most definitely CAN be written. “Off the top/dome” is a form of freestyling that’s used mostly for joking around and having fun, but it isn’t going to sound polished. Edit in 2021: Since there’s some children in my comment here’s a snippet from an article “Everything you know about freestyling is wrong” by Complex. A peer of Kane’s, Kool Moe Dee, confirmed this meaning in his 2003 book There’s a God on the Mic. He said that, until the 1990s, freestyling “was about how hard you could come with a written rhyme with no particular subject matter and no real purpose other than showing your lyrical prowess.”
This is the best reaction channel by far...you know the culture, you know true rap and you groovin! That's what I'm talking about. Both lil dicky and you are delivering, man. Respect.
Hey man, great channel. You're authentic and wise. One of the few reaction channels that have substance. Love that occasionally pause the video and carry on a genuine, intelligent dialogue.
@@feezbreez1640 Russell Westbrook on a Farm, $ave Dat Money, Professional Rapper, Lemme Freak, White Crime, Darwin, Bruh..., Jewish Flow, and The Antangonist are all flames and I just gave u like 9 off the dome
I appreciate you have perspective an you acknowledge things that most people usually don’t see, channels dope. Keep it up man. I have nothing but respect for ya. 👋🏻🤛🏻
I watch a lot of reviewers bro and I have to say you are one of my favorite. I really feel like I always know your reactions are genuine and honest first time reactions. Also I think I realized he wasn't freestyling about the same point you did. Haha. Keep it up fam, great content.
He could be freestyling. He's got moments where he repeats himself or slows down his pace, like he is trying to process some more rhymes in his head and then he picks up the pace again. If he rapped at a high pace for the entire time, I would be suspicious. Also, Sway could have given him the five fingers of death freestyle format, where he tosses out different topics for rappers to freestyle about.
Here just a week ago he did the “Whiskey Ginger” podcast, which is Andrew Santino’s, the red head that plays his roommate in his show Dave. And he says that freestyle is just a type of rap and it is written. I recommend the podcast. You’ll like santino more as well. One of the top comedians in the country!!
The “I feel the pressure, under more scrutiny/what I do, act more jewishly?” Is actually a reference to a bar in Kanye’s Can’t Tell Me Nothing (I feel the pressure, under more scrutiny/what I do, act more stupidly?) The fact that Dicky can hide that play on fucking Kanye is insane.
@Ralph Yeah, very stupid change tbh, but writing something out of the dome in 30~ minutes is pure talent regardless, but it is definitely still not considered the original freestyle..
@@TooGood4Gamesv1 You do realize "original" freestyles were written. Early rap, freestyles were written, and THEN people started classifying freestyles as off the dome, and that stopped around like 2010. Look up the facts bro, stop spewing shit
Dylan Baynard that’s just wrong. Very few rappers can do that multiple times while sounding good and not repeating shit, it’s a completely different skill. Every rapper writes shit down when they think of bars and a lot of that stuff comes up in these freestyles. It doesn’t mean everything has to be off the top at that moment
You are always speaking the truth. Unlike other channels where they are hating on Lil Dicky because they are jealous. You know true talent. Always enjoyed your reactions.
Meme Machine Sorry bro, it was not.. I bumped lil dicky back then and I can tell you I could rap along to him when the sway freestyle dropped cuz I knew the lyrics already, must’ve been out for a while.😂💯🔥
Literally my first time watching a reaction to the freestyle where the reactor doesn't react to the xbox, boner during physical, and sportscenter bars. Lol. Still some good stuff man
I randomly ask people "Who loves orange soda?" (I have had one person who has not failed that question lol) I remember that shit lol. This is my first time seeing a video of yours and I totally agree. Man, I love me a freestyle; no reading from your phone, just off the top. I remember growing up listening to my uncles and the men around me freestyle so when I witness/am present for one it is really nostalgic for me. Loved the video. Subscribed.
As a struggling musician, and as I look and care to critics. I appreciate your insight. Your fare to say what you want, but it feels nice to agree. Thank you for the video. I watched the whole thing and I needed this.
man. i just finished the video and I have to amend my prior statement. I more than enjoyed this video. Your philosophy/world view is wonderful. Thank you.
That bar about they thought he was lonely island means a lot to him. Lonely Island is a group of established artists or people who do funny songs for fun, not for their career. LD does this for a career and he doesn't want to be taken for a joke or not a real rapper. LD wants a spot in the industry.
Out of all the reactions I've watched, you are the only one that said it might not be freestyle, I've been thinking that for awhile. It still good though, don't want to tear it up.
I immediately subscribed after you said Lil Dicky may not have truly freestyled it , but you respect his transparency of being himself. I just watched four other reaction videos on this and YOU were the first to call it like I think. He wrote it, but memorized it perfectly for performance to hold his rep. KRS-1 always said to be true to yourself and that is hip hop. #OldWhiteRapperTalk. Thank you!
Hardest part of this freestyle is easily when he switches the flow up: Am I lookin’ like I need to get a job? Or lookin’ like I need a bodyguard? I play tennis with Leonardo How y’all train? On track like cargo I go dumb, don’t dumb it up Don’t fuck on planes, but I’m coming up Add up my views to sum it up I was just on SportsCenter, dun-dun-dun
He knew he’d have to freestyle, he dint know the beat, so he could have preplaned the flowers, but had to make it flow with the beat. It’s hard either way
I can imagen that he thought many lines before occasionally and kept them in the back of his mind just for fun and then saw a opportunity to drop them there, so I would definitely say that it is freestyle
Bruh. This is a written free verse. Not off the top. That’s not opinion. It’s a fact. Straight from his mouth. But even if he never said it you would have to be so naive to think even 10 seconds are off the top. Listen to Harry Mack or Justina Valentine her free style on sway is what a real off the dome freestyle sounds like when someone is insanely talented. But yeah this is 100 percent written and rehearsed beforehand.
Freestyle is a genre of styles. One of them is no concept rhyming. Which is written but there isn't substance. Just bars. Another is a off the top freestyle. Not written, non polished.
