I was lucky to have a really cool older guy that was my big homey as a teenager. He was the captain of the football and basketball teams. Real local celeb, always in the local papers type cat. All around, all state athlete. And he was a talented musician to boot. He'd take me to functions where there were older chicks and stuff but he always told me that I wasnt under any pressure to do anything to fit in and that included sexual stuff with the girls. He told me he'd been waiting himself and that was because he saw how much of a responsibility it really was after watching guys pump and dump on his three older sisters. He said he wasnt ready to be responsible for a young woman's heart like that yet so he was waiting until he really respected and loved a girl. That gave me a lot of confidence to be myself and tune out the noise.

As a teen, i can say that half the generation is growing up too fast and the other half refuses to grow up.

I remember back in high school when I was 17 that most of my friends already lost their virginity, and felt like I had to do it soon or else I was gonna be "that loser whos still a virgin in their 20s", that was what i thought in my head. Looking back now as 22, I feel so stupid of how much that worried me and made me feel like I was weirdo for not losing it alreadly before graduating. If I could go back in time and talked to 17 year old anxious me, I would've and told him to not worry and that all the hype about sex and losing it soon is all bullshit. And also your first time isn't gonna be "the greatest experience in your entire life", most stories about losing your virginity, including mine are awkward. There is no such thing as an "A++ perfect score!" on the first time. tldr: All the hype about having sex and losing your V-card soon in high school is all bullshit, and not to be something a teen should ever worry about in school.

Its funny to look back at my high school life and realize how non-present sex was. I'm not sure if it was because I just wasn't around those types of people, or if it was me not recognizing it, but especially when compared to my friends at other high schools, its seems weird that there was never like a "thing" within my social circle. I mean, I had romantic relationships and interests but sex was never the end goal for me (and it still isn't lmao). Initially I was a bit anxious about not having any dating or relationship milestones even in my early 20s that a friend of mine said I should just have a one night stand (note they were joking). I told myself to wait and find someone who loves me and I love too. Eventually I had my first relationship at 23 and I’m glad I waited because I learnt a lot from my own maturity and from my partner. I’m happy I had these moments with someone I love and who loved me back.

Thankfully, when I was a kid I never really felt the pressure of "having to lose my virginity", in fact, in the vast majority of cases, schools and societies in the west tend to promote abstinence (which comes with a lot of issues as well). I decided to have sex because I was intrigued by it and it seemed pleasurable. When I finally did, I ended up really enjoying it and actively looked for more. People who pressure you into having sex are usually other kids, and it is because of the parents and institutions keeping sex as a taboo that teenagers end up developing all these unhealthy attitudes towards it. Sex should be talked about more and old, backward terms such as "virginity" need to be abolished. The concept of "virginity" is specially harmful to girls, who grow up being told that losing it will somehow diminish their "value" and would be a stain to their purity. Women obviously don't have this same standard or pressure the boys are describing here. Both the boys pressuring themselves to have sex and girls being too afraid to enjoy or explore their sexuality are products of a patriarchal society who is still too afraid to talk about one of the most natural human activities there are. Nowadays, no people or institution should be pressuring you into doing anything. Follow what you feel is right for you and do it responsibly, always acting with empathy and care.

Funnily enough, I grew up in a weird hyperfeminist period in Australia during the 2010s that had numerous articles on why all men are rapists and that sex is evil, so I grew up thinking that women didn't really like men. This was also when being bi was apparently a "new thing" (like no media ever mentioned anything about sexuality here in Australia in the early 2010's, everything was censored heavily) and girls were only ever openly "dating" each other and openly hating men was the "revolutionary" thing to do, especially on their public social media accounts. None of my mates ever lost their virginities until after high school and we weren't even part of the "nerdy losers" clique. None of my classmates ever dated each other. I only later found out that most of the girls secretly dated guys much older than them, funnily enough, like 20-to-30 somethings when they were in their mid-teems.

It's so weird when you get older and discover there is more to life and finding a good partner and happiness than sex. You look back and think you shouldn't rush it. We should encourage people to wait till they find someone actually good and healthy for them. Also, in Australia, we have a school subject called "Health Ed." (It was called Sex Ed. For a few weeks before, all the parents freaked out.) In that class, everything was explained in both a medical way as well as a social advice way. Health. Ed. really should be mandatory in all schools. There are too many people who have no idea how any of it works, are totally unprepared, and as a result make horrible mistakes or treat their partner horribly because they just don't know what they are doing and get all defensive if anyone tries to explain it. There is also a lot of misinformation both on the internet and because there are friends who are either themselves misinformed or are purposely trying to prank or bully their other friends. Having an actual school class on it is super helpful because it would be a reliable source of information, and I gotta say that class gave me actually useful and helpful advice.
