TRASH Them or SAVE Them? - What to Do with Action Figure Boxes

As action figure collectors, we need to make a decision about what to do with the boxes--save them, or throw them out?
I used to be a pretty dedicated Transformers collector, and there was a time when I had difficulty throwing out the boxes due to the cool artwork and the novelty of having them. Over time though, it got out of hand and I had way too many boxes and not enough space for them all. Eventually, I threw most of them out.
In the video, I show some of the action figure boxes that I still have, including boxes for Overwatch figures and a few Transformers boxes that I haven't thrown out.

I would say another pro to keeping the box is to protect more fragile figures during transport if you had to move or something. It’s a must for statues as well.

As a collector of Video Games and Transformers. I was looking for a solution to Bulk Boxes from action figures. By watching this video I came up with a very good idea. At the time of writing this, I have been breaking down my figure boxes and being delicate with the tape cutting them with a box cutter. Then flattering the box and keeping inserts, manuals, and other important papers to be able to reassemble a box as needed. I hope this helps. Happy hunting for new and exciting adventures collecting everyone!

I do the same. I started doing it with the legacy transformer boxes because the art on the box is beautiful. I cut and flatten them and keep as much as I can recreate the box and keep them in a folder with dividers. Easy way to store them and keep the box art.

This is my issue constantly, I can’t believe there’s a video. I did get rid of a lot of Nendoroid boxes in the beginning and some of them are worth a lot now. I’ve actually bought the empty boxes of some of my fav figures that I threw away. Not I’m just struggling with space so the question presents itself again. I live in a small studio apartment. I’m just going to have to be more discriminating in what I buy, and maybe part with a lot of my figures.

Yeah, its rough. I've only recently got interested in Nendoroids. They're pretty neat, and right now I keep all the boxes. I only plan to buy the Overwatch ones so hopefully things don't get too out of hand. With higher quality figures like that, it feels like a crime to throw the packaging away, but sometimes you just gotta do what you gotta do. If you suspect a certain figure is going to really increase in value over time (limited editions, rare variants, etc.), in those cases I'd try to hold onto the packaging as long as possible--its kinda hard to predict that sort of thing though.

initially i kept all the boxes, but like you said, overtime it just piles up turning into a mess, one good trick to not feel attached to the boxes is to tear or damage them, it feels easier to throw them out, but i do keep some boxes especially the plastic clam shells because its useful when you want to sell/ship the figures securely. also i try to keep the newer boxes, if im not happy with the figure and want to preserve the value when reselling them

I’m a big McFarlane Toys collector. The boxes I save vs the ones I throw away breaks down like this. If I’m collecting the entire line like Spawn I will save the boxes. If I only cherry pick from a line, like DC Multiverse, I throw them away.
@justingarman6980
@justingarman6980 5 месяцев назад
That’s terrible advice. I mean I get what you’re saying. But, one figure from a line could be worth more with packaging than an entire line.

@@justingarman6980Who cares what its worth. Collect to collect and stop worrying about the value. You shouldnt even give it a thought since if you bought it then you should want to keep it forever. Unless youre an in box collector every box should be trashed unless you need it for to store it if you dont want to do the obvious and bag it up and throw it in a tote. Ive collected for 43 years and have tens of thousands of figures and boxes cant be kept for something like that.

@@FFFFPPPP no but you can keep card backs, fit nicely in a comic book box. Also, my family will have to deal with all of it. So if either sell it before I passed away if I know I am lol.

I am a box and loose collector (TF,Joes,DC multiverse, Halo) My first 500 figures are loose then I noticed that I was out of shelves space, So I started to keep the rest in their boxes. Actually keeping the boxes is working for me because I can stack them which I can not do with loose figures. When I want to display I just pull them out of their box.

I chuck my boxes away without a second thought, I buy the figs to enjoy in my displays, not as some potential investment for the future, go re-watch Toy Story 2 and relearn the lessons therein

The boxes of overwhelming. I don't think I will open all my figures. But some I have too cause I like certain figures.

I think my takeaway is, figures like Legends and Black Series and McFarlanes, most of those figures are readily available and not too much on eBay or Mercari. Figures like you said, sh figuarts, Goodsmile, Mafex, you might want to keep boxes for.

@@collectorsheadquarters1069 I first started collecting some saint seiya Anime heroes last December. I got 2 as it was my favorite show and they were on sale for 50% off. I also bought the funko pops and banpresto figurines of the same series. Once i got up to date with all of those I later found interest in Mortal Kombat again and got the McFarland Figures of MK11. The rest that I have are just pops of street fighter and some of mortal kombat. I don’t have to much space to display them so i keep them on a bookshelf for now although I can fit more on there by moving them around or like how you mentioned in the video, I can simply place them back in the box and hang them on my walls.

I collect a lot of anime figs, and I started keeping the boxes a few years ago. It was fine til they started taking up so much space. It's gotten out of control. Now, I'm only gonna keep the boxes for certain figs. Thanks for the great advice

I used to keep my boxes, but I eventually filled a large space of my loft with them. When it came to moving house, it was to much stuff on top of everything else, and I decided to get rid of them. I don't regret it now, and over the years I really haven't resold much of my collection to worry about the resell value.

With some of these newer non plastic boxes What I started to do was cut all the tape off all the sides and pull the boxes out as nicely as possible and flatten em as flat as can. But I have noticed numerous of my older boxes I put into storage into my garage like u said they fade or worse in my area they start to break down. My garage is off the house and I live rt next to the ocean so humidity is a major issue. May just start throwing em all out

I just keep then in a heavy duty garbage bag (the ones worth keeping) and put them in the garage, closet or basement or attic. They're not that hard to keep out of the way.

Reason #3 for getting rid of your boxes: You eliminate an unnecessary fire hazard in your home.

Well I only keep the import boxes like Figma and S.H.Figuarts because I love Japan figure boxes because I appreciate the product shoots on how they display there figures. When it comes for Marvel legends or Star Wars The Black Series I normally cut them for artwork or logo designs I thinks it’s cool and I enjoy it.

I've noticed that people are selling their boxes online, but wasn't sure if it was worth doing. I kept all my boxes or most (MAFEX, Mezco, McFarlane, SH Figuarts, etc) but now I have run out of room. If I could get a few bucks from them and help another collector out, that would be cool.

These past few years I've been able to renew my love for Transformers. I started off collecting the Power of the Prime's Trilogy, then moved onto the War for Cybertron Trilogy. Lets just say probably 95% of my so called Covid $$ from our tax returns went to launching my collection. I had this very situation come up when I began to unbox a few of my figures. I love the Box art as much as the figure, so I didn't want to throw them away. Some boxes came in very poor condition and I'm trying to figure out how to flatten/fix them. Since the boxes are folded by tabs and taped together, I'm able to have a flat piece of artwork now. My goal is to one day meet up with the artists and have them autograph them. Do you know of a way to flatten a box to get rid of crinkled areas? For the instructions I plan to laminate them to preserve them. And then digitally scan them so I have a record of it in PDF form.

Nice helpful video! Thank you. I was a Mattel DC collector and now transitioned to McFarlane. I have accumulated a lot of boxed yhat luckily is in a storage space at home attached to my garage. But its getting out of hand slowly. Also bothers my spouse and kind of also "shows" how much I have bought ($). So figures by themselves will not look like much compared to figures plus boxes (or in boxes). So I am gonna dospose. On the fence if inhave to save the art in the back (too much effort tho due to sheer number of boxes i have)
