Hello and welcome to episode 28 of Trash to Track.
In this episode we look at my dads Mainline class 45 Peak loco. This loco has been sat unused for around 15 years. I have fond memories of this loco so lets see if i can reactivate this family favourite back to operational condition complete with DCC fitting.
Thanks for looking.

Excellent work! Do like the old Mainline Peak - good to see one fully rejuvenated and modernised.

Great repair Dan. Just to say the red stuff on the brushes is in fact post assembly screw lock, to prevent them coming loose

I can remember in about 79 80 ish running my mainline 45039 manchester regiment on an ovel of track in my bedroom and the real 45039 came past on a coal train to barrow colliery , my bedroom window over looked part of the wath branch of the woodhead route and several 45's started to appear after being cascaded from passenger workings .

I just got one of these but it's a bit of a sheep in wolf's clothing with only two axles picking up and two driven!

I think the red paint was a factory anti tamper seal as I believe the models came with a manufacturer warranty? I remember getting one of these in 1976 for Christmas. This model was a real game changer in 00 guage! I loved the almost real Sulzer sound they made ! Iloved this locomotive back in the day ,these had amazing tractive effort for what it was?

Looks nice, you could always add a stay alive if it has trouble with the pickups.

Good effort Dan, always good to bring a model from your childhood back to the land of the living.

I'm sure I read somewhere that red insulating paint was for warranty purposes, anti tamper paint

We must be about the same age. I still have my blue Mainline 45. I repositioned the buffer beam to the bogies too. I guess there must have been an article in one of the magazines of the time. Maybe Airfix Model Trains? I also replaced the head codes with the dots that featured on the Peaks I knew at New Street in the eighties and I remember also I fitted reversible lights stolen from a Lima Italian electric loco. I seem to remember adding extra pickups too. I’ll dive into my train box tomorrow I think and have a look. It was always one of my favourites, not least because I found it made a nice « diesely » noise as it hurtled around my layout with a rake of Airfix mk2’s behind it

I got one. Think it’s called The Manchester regiment. Has been run for 30 years.

Hey great video, one point to note, when you disassemble the motor, there was a white washer that goes on the front the armature and the front pate, you can see it at 5.40, when you cleaned it you dislodged it, I don't if you put back, but that needs you be there as the it will cut down on the noise it makes and stops the armature moving back and forth.

Nice restoration Nick Australia

it wasn't for insulation it was to leave witness marks if you stripped it down yourself to get out of waranty claims

I got a few Mainline peaks, only because they're cheap to get and my favourite loco class - I've found them to be noisy and underpowered but I know Bachmann retooled that model to make it 8 wheel drive (4 wheels off each bogie) with a center motor so I'm hoping once I found a cheap one of those I can upgrade one of my peaks

The early Bachmann flywheel drive chassis will drop straight in. The only problem is its ridiculously geared so it comes out of the starting blocks like Eugene Bolt and has a top speed higher than concorde lol. Smooth and quiet though 😀😀

The red varnish is applied at the factory and would have originally gone over the screw heads to make people, with far less ability than you, stop and think before removing them. Please stop telling people to oil the front bearing on ring-field or any motor with a horizontal commutator. the oil seeps through to the back and then centrifugal force spreads it out across the surface of the commutator and, if its an oil like "3 in 1", it will dry leaving that orange/brown gunk you've just taken ages removing. You should really use a dry lubricant like soft pencil lead. Twisting a soft lead pencil on the inside of the bearing and or rubbing the rotor shaft before assembly. Can I also point out that those fibreglass pens are very abrasive and can easily remove the plating from wheels. Once the brass is exposed, they will need constant cleaning.

Hi Dan great video, I've just been running my Peak mainline diesel, it runs okay foreword but in reverse there is a knocking, there's nothing catching and it runs but just knocks I can't see where the knocking is coming from, any advice would be really appreciated, thanks John
