In this TEDx talk, Karla Hawley shares how a nostalgic piece of music helped her address and overcome the pain of childhood abuse. Her work as certified music therapist with the Snohomish County Music Project gives her a unique perspective on the role of music to help individuals, families and groups suffering from trauma find peace.
This talk was given at TEDxSnoIsleLibraries 2016 in Edmonds, Washington.

Karla seeks solitude in wilderness and playfulness in people's smiles. She uses music therapy to build communities within assisted living and memory care facilities, and to treat people who have suffered from trauma. Karla directs music therapy services for the Snohomish County Music Project, working with families and intimate community circles of youth who are at risk, in legal trouble or on the streets.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

People would ask me what style I play guitar, my only response was I play how I feel, I dont have a style and now I understand why. Im taking musical therapy in school this year.

This really got to me. Didn’t expect to cry at a TED talk, but a profound story about personal expression in a repressive environment. Thankyou❤

This has brought so much understanding to my drive and need for certain songs to be played over and over again when my anxiety is at it's most unbearable. When I put on those songs reality, the world, and my anxiety disappear. I feel strong emotion but it is empowering relief and release. Until now I had no insight to why I obsessively listen to the same songs over and over, only that it helped sooth me. Thank you Karla for sharing.

Yes, it happens to me too, when music moves you into another dimension, but unfortunately the peace doesn't last for long. It's like a short-term painkiller.

So sorry you have anxiety.😢. Have you considered listening to self hypnosis recordings? There are many here on RU-vid. Self hypnosis, where YOU are always in control, is such a valuable tool , to help you feel more in control, generally. It's like having a caring friend talk to you kindly.😊. I take the view that anxiety can become a " Vicious Circle", so you need to do something that frees you from it.😊. Michael Sealey is my favourite, for his friendly, soothing speaking voice.😊 Best Wishes.😊💕😊 🇬🇧😊💕🌹🌎🌿💕😊🇬🇧

I understand you, and I admire you for your optimism and resilience. I was in a similar situation, and I had stepmother as well, and she gad schizophrenia, and she was violent with me , sometimes, and she told me she will kill me in my sleep, and I could not sleep well, for 10 years. After all these things, I married a covert narcissist, who put the icing on the cake. I found refuge in reading , and later on I became an artist, a painter. I still am a chronic insomniac. Partial success, problem not solved yet, even if I listen to music before sleep.
