I think this type of analysis, after a trip or after living with a capsule or wardrobe, etc. is so important. Analyzing what we really wore and what we wished we had leads to better choices next time. My most common travel capsule mistake has been relying too much on the expected weather, even though I check both the forecast and averages for the location. It always seems to be hotter than I expect, so I needed more cool, lightweight items. The warmer items don’t get worn, and they’re usually the heaviest and most bulky.
@tanyaeve9498
@tanyaeve9498 Год назад
I agree, I always do this when I pack away out of season clothes. Some seasons there are clothes I have hardly worn, due to the weather ‐ I certainly got lots of wear out of my hot weather clothes this summer! Though, lifestyle is a big factor, too.

I have the opposite problem- I pack to few items to keep me warm and always wear the same few things because I'm cold (despite checking the weather).

So funny that you didn’t wear your dresses. I am the opposite! I love dresses and rarely wear shorts and button ups. I had similar but opposite conclusions to you after my vacation in Italy. Having a capsule really shows us our true likes and dislikes! Great video ! Grazie mille 💚💚💚

I just got back from France yesterday... and wore my loafers all the time. Interesting fact though, I was the only person I ever saw wearing such shoes. Of the hundreds of women I saw every day, not one had loafers on. Every woman had on either sneakers, or a high heeled bootie type shoe. Thought I was being so trendy, apparently not, but at least I was comfortable. lol.

What a great analysis. Most travel packing videos are from the perspective of before the trip but this is actually even more helpful. It would be great too if you could show how you fit your capsule wardrobe, with shoes, bags and accessories in your suitcase. Thanks!

I just returned (to B.C.) from a ten day visit to Quebec. I took three pairs of jeans and one pair of linen wide-leg pants, plus coordinating tops that went with everything. One of the most versatile choices I’ve found is to pack a couple of short-sleeved t-shirts (or sleeveless tops if it’s warm) and a couple of light, short cardigans. Every thing mixes and matches. This allows me to pack fewer clothes. My goal is always toward lighter luggage.

It will be fun to have you back with your full wardrobe to work with, but I loved your Europe videos - i was definitely living vicariously through them😊. I have to say i am not at all surprised by your shoe post mortem- I did think, way back when you were packing - that you were missing some comfy shoes, like loafers and flat sandals. I think it’s perfectly reasonable that you had to course correct a bit, nine months away from home, living in different climates, doing things you don’t do at home, plus your knee injury! You did great!

I love this video. I get so stressed when I pack even for a short trip that I won't have something I ALWAYS pack too much. Hearing you discuss what worked for you and what didn't for an extended trip is so helpful. One, to realize I WILL survive even if I don't pack my denim jacket. Two, hearing you analyze your travel capsule gives me things to think about when I am packing in general. So, thank you.

I found this video very helpful--thanks for sharing your process, Alyssa! I just came back from Italy and went through the same process--what I wish I did and didn't pack. I've learned to take photos (or keep a list) of the items I take on my extended trips as a reference for future trips. If one plans to do future such trips, it really is worthwhile to invest in some "travel-friendly" items to have on hand, especially shoes. Have lightweight, multi-purpose shoes that look cute with pants AND skirts and dresses is such a challenge!

I make a packing list with everything I bring including vitamins, food, and teabags. I do the same analysis after the trip to see which items and gears were seldom used, not needed, or never touched. After years I manage to avoid redundant or vanity clothing and have room to bring back a thrifted item or two. Gear is a hard one. I still bring way more than I would use. The excuse is always “what if”. When space is not strict like in car camping, overpacking gear is bound to happen.

Your videos have become part of my Sunday morning routine, Alyssa. The topic is always relevant to me. You make them look effortless but the way you present your content is so very thoughtful. I’m sure lots of planning goes into them. This one was such a helpful travel wardrobe debrief video. I’m off to Portugal for 11 days in less than a week. Normally, I’m a “what if” packer, but thanks to some fabulous resources, including your videos, I managed to create a travel capsule and utilize creative packaging tips - and am now all packed into one well-planned carry-on bag. I’ll be sure to take a page from your book and do an analysis post-vacay. Very helpful exercise, for certain. Thank you!

Big lesson here: If it's not right for you, let it go, let it go, LET IT GO! (I have such a hard time letting go of things that still look nice, but I never wear them!) I'm going into my closet this week and once again, try to purge (donate) what I don't wear anyway.

Such a great video, thank you, Alyssa! What I have learned from traveling so far: variety is more important than duplicates (what you touched on with the tights and loafers and a chunky sweater) - first because of style reasons, second because of unexpected weather changes. I too ended up buying a sweater during a trip to Scotland in summer. And also: when I pack I always make sure to take only favourite items with me. I have tried the trick of taking a not-so-favourite item with me (similar to your 2 dresses) in order to "force" myself to wear it more, but it sadly didnt work out for me either.

This totally helps! I am headed to NYC for 4 days and it will be the perfect Fall weather so YES, loafers, moto boots, and 1 button-up, 1 or 2 long sleeve tees, and a chunky knit-this is perfect! I often don't pack chunky knits BECAUSE they simply don't work under a coat but you made me realize-this trip I won't need a super warm coat. (That would be a great video-how to wear cozy sweaters under a coat)

Totally agreed with you on loafers (or any nicer looking, comfortable slip on shoes). I brought my ballerina flats on my last trip in September (Summer transitioning into Fall) and it was a good complementary to my sneakers. They are so easy to pack. Sometimes you just need to slip on something for dinner or a quick walk in the neighborhood. Only issue with ballerina flats is that they're not the most comfortable on European cobble stone streets - loafers would've been a more solid option!

Welcome home, Alyssa. I think basically your predicament is inevitable because there are so many factors we just can't know ahead of time (including breaking a knee cap - ouch!). However confident we are of our own style, we are going to be influenced by the prevailing style of the place we visit. Also the weather: the statistics are one thing, but what actually happens during our visit may be different and call for different clothes or shoes. Like you, my mistake is typically not to pack warm enough. Always a good sweater! Then again, when you have to buy during a trip you can end up with something different and special and that will act as a souvenir. There can be an upside such as that fabulous chambray shirt!

Welcome home!! I loved this video and can see why you feel the way you do about all these pieces but in my experience, it’s often the culture, atmosphere, mistaken weather, ambiance…whatever it is you aren’t home in your own environment. This changes everything, which is why I think that clothes change their personality if you wear them out of their usual context. Does that make any sense to you? It’s like in reverse, a huge floral dress bought and worn in Hawai’i just feels completely off here in Canada. Anyway, I love everything you teach us and this vlog topic is no exception. Merci!!

Id also take a denim jacket and a white in the same style because they pretty much pair with anything and are good for a throw-on for indoors. I’m already planning what to take for a month in Tuscany mid March to mid April. Biggest dilemmas: #1 Jacket - Leather? Denim? Other? I do have a very lightweight packable raincoat with a hood that I will take. #2 Suitcase? I’d love to not check a bag especially since I may be dong some train travel for weekends between cities so want a maneuverable bag. So as an experienced and fashionable traveler, perhaps videos on grappling with luggage types as well as managing “outerwear” when spanning seasons? I saw your video re your trip to London carrying your blazer and trench. BTW l love the Bali sandals, Brave leather belts, POMP shirt I’ve received and am waiting for the convertible leather backpack from JMB - such great people to work with!

video was great, very helpful. I have a question for you, have you ever been in Italy at the end of march or early April? I am looking for style tips for a colder spring weather.... I hope you have a wonderful day and thanks for making these videos

My big thing is always pack a light wollen sweater or cardigan since either you are in a colder country or in a work one with way to cold ac

Like you, I love wearing shirts but find that tees are more practical in that they can be worn more than once and still look okay. How did you handle laundry on your trip? Looking forward to future videos about your travel wardrobe.

Shoes…I’ve traveled to Italy annually for the past 27 years and I spend the time in between looking for the most comfortable AND stylish shoes I can find. After a month or more of non-stop walking on all surfaces including cobblestones those shoes are put into home use or donated. I cringed when I heard you say you wore your aunt’s shoes that were a bit too wide. The comfort, stability, functionality and style (in Italy) of my chosen shoes are so important. If my feet are miserable, so am I. 😂

The cold is different there in shoulder season. It’s hard to prepare.

I have learned from my last trip to Europe in September that from now on, I need to pack a travel-friendly wind/rain hoodie coat no matter what. I know it's not the most stylish thing to bring but there are days when layering (short trench + thin knit + summer scarf) is still not warm enough because of the wind! I think bringing a chunkier knitwear is really a good idea - maybe a knit cardigan would be more versatile?

oooh yes a wind and rain coat is essential!

A weatherproof coat and shoes is essential. But lots of thin base layers like vests and tights/leggings (under jeans or pants) will do wonders! It's not unusual for Europeans to wear 4 or 5 layers in winter 😅
