I recently took a day trip to Dresden before spending the weekend hiking in the Sächsische Schweiz. We had about 6 hours to discover the city and packed as many sites as we could into this limited time. The Altstadt of Dresden was nearly completely destroyed in the last leg of WWII by controversial British and American bombing campaigns. After the reunification of Germany in 1990, reconstruction of historical buildings began and construction continues to this day.
We visited the following sites:
1. Brühl’s Terrace - 2:15
2. Frauenkirche Dresden - 2:37
3. Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister (Old Masters Picture Gallery) - 3:53
4. Semperoper Dresden - 4:26
5. Fürstenzug - 5:06
6. Golden Rider Statue - 6:24
7. Kunsthofpassage Dresden - 7:15
I will be posting more videos this summer of places that you can travel within Germany for those of you who are planning on visiting Europe or for those of you within Germany looking for travel options during Corona times.
If you have any recommendations of places I should visit, leave a comment below!

I actually still have to visit Dresden but as I am fond of architecture I once donated money to the very sucessful society "Gesellschaft Historischer Neumarkt" whose aim is to rebuild the city and heal the architectural wounds the bombing caused. They have been very sucessful in a lot of projects and are still pushing for more reconstruction in the city council. Thanks for the great tour!

I think it is such a shame that so many buildings were destroyed during the war. I think it is a good thing that there are organizations like the one you mentioned as well as the East Germany tax that helped to rebuild what was destroyed.

What a nice video. I'm from Amsterdam. I visited Dresden together with my dad in may 1990. We made a trip to Chemnitz to look for the place where my dad was forced labour during WW2 1942-1945 and where he survived an almost similar bombardment as on Dresden. We were unsuccesfull and decided to look in Dresden. Hotel accomodation was not there yet. We saw the heap of stones that now is the Frauenkirche and also the super tile mural. You made me want to go there again, with my wife. I'm going to start planning a camping trip Chemnitz and Dresden, Czech Republic as soon as Covid19 is gone.

Traveling is very difficult right now. It was hard to maintain proper distance and wear a mask throughout the city with the heat.

Very beautiful video! :) I have relatives in Dresden and it is a mostly beautiful city. Some more things I think one could keep in mind when staying there perhaps longer: • there is the „Mathematisch-Physikalischer Salon“ which presents astronomy- and science related tools (think: clocks, telescopes, early calculators etc.) dating back as far as to the Renaissance, I think this is very cool if one is interested in these early scientific instruments. It is located within the Zwinger. • another cool museum is the „Verkehrsmuseum“ (traffic museum) which contains many transport vehicles from cars to trains and planes, it may be worth a visit. • there is also the „Gläserne Manufaktur“, in which the VW Phaeton (a high-end VW car) is manufactured, and there are guided tours showing the production steps. I am not into cars, but this may be interesting to some. • there are many beautiful cafés around the Altmarkt or close to the Frauenkirche, for instance at the Cosel-Palais. Of course there is much more in terms of opera houses and art exhibitions, but the most important ones are the ones you saw and showed. :) Part of my family grew up close to Dresden when it was bombed, but it was not really an exceptional event during the war, even though these things are always a tragedy. Of course I cannot have a definitive opinion, being born more than 50 years after it happened, but to be honest, the fact that these attacks on Dresden are so infamous has more to do with its propaganda value than with the reality, even as horrible as it may be for the people who lived through it. Just to keep in mind that it may be a controversial thing, but it is not the first thing that German people think about when thinking about Dresden. :) Just very small thing: August der Starke (the golden Rider) did live in the 17th Century :) He was indeed the embodiment of the baroque Saxon nobleman. I hope you had a good time in Dresden Edit: if you are in Dresden longer, you may want to visit Meissen and its "Meissen porcelain" manufacturer, which is one of the oldest producers of porcelain in Europe.

Thank you for the more detailed account of what to do in Dresden! If you make a video, I will definitely watch (: That is an interesting perspective. I didn't really speak to any locals from Dresden other than in the context of service, but find it interesting that this maybe wasn't as big of a deal as it seems when you read about the city from a historical perspective. Other than the tragic loss of life, I find it very sad and shameful that so many historical buildings were destroyed.

Glad you enjoyed Dresden! Greetings from one of your subscribers from Dresden :D. You picked well for the limited time you had. If you ever come back with an extra day to spend here, I'd suggest a trip with the ferniculars or towards the Saxon Switzerland mountain area. You didn't expect it to be so clean? What exactly did you hear about Dresden before? 😁

So nice to hear from a sub from Dresden! We actually went to the Sächsische Schweiz right after stopping in Dresden and spent a few days hiking around the area! We parked near the Neustadt and walked then over the bridge and into the Altstadt and from that vantage we saw a lot of construction, so I assumed that it would be that clean! Should have explained that better in the video (:

If you look at the Frauenkirche, it is not completely new. They tried to use as much of the original ruins in the rebuilding, so it has that speckled look. also, many see it as a Roman Catholic church. It is Lutheran.

They even used the rubble, so it is as much a reconstrction as possible.

I read that when I was doing research before going! I think it's great that they were able to incorporate some of the old raw materials while rebuilding.

@@taylorintransit3421 I think re-using all the stones also made the project cost a lot more because they scanned and catalogued every single stone that they could find and they tried to re-use in exactly the same spot that it was used in in the original building. I remember that I found that incredibly cool when I was younger during the rebuilding process.

Enjoyed this a lot. Gonna visit Dresden in June as well. Kinda funny and sad how you were talking about "people" on that mural when it were actually just men. Which had me think for rhe rest of the video about how our city scapes even nowadays are just plastered with replicas of rich men putting their own faces somewhere or having it put there by their eich fanboys :(

Thank you very much !
