I have processed many thousands of passports at the border. My quick tips for a more pain free experience: * Have all of your info at hand * Know where you are going * Know where you are staying * Know where you just came from, and what your flight number was * If there is anything that you should have filled in before before being processed (Incoming Passenger Card) fill it in completely. Answer the questions on the card at face value - do not place your own interpretation on them. * Do not try to make jokes - we've heard them a million times before.

You say nothing gets you to front of the line. Global entry does that essentially.

Also good to know if going to a place that's got strict quarantine and you could be fined for bringing something you shouldn't have (like certain foods), and you are not exactly sure what to declare, just declare it. You won't be fined because you are unsure (generally). This applies for Australia. If you are not sure if what you brought is not allowed, just declare as such and the most that will happen is that it's confiscated and destroyed, no fine for you.
@KimTaura

Another thing for getting through customs, Know what items shouldn't be brought to that country! Fresh food is probably the worst, but know what they care about. Taking an apple from the flight as a layover snack can have all your bags searched and delay you. Also, declare everything, don't hide it.
@owenshebbeare2999

Definitely true, even from developed countries: just because something is available and sold to you as a souvenir or legal substancein one country it doesn't mean it is legal to take into either tyour next country, or home country. Check quarantine and Customs regulations for every country you visit. Living in Australia we have among the strictest limits on Duty-Free and quarantine: those Findig shoes from Thailand might be an issue due to the widespread use of endangeted animal hides, as but one example. I checked thoroughly, so no Findigs for me! In Asia, traditional medicines can be hard to get through Customs in other countries. Lots of good travel guides to specific countries online. Lonely Planet works for me, but make sure any information you get is up to date and official.

About the customs thing. You wouldn't think this is a big thing, but bring pens with you. I've had this happen so many times where they pass out the customs forms on the plane and I don't have a pen. So than I have to ask people for a pen. It's kind of like the bathroom thing. It doesn't seem like it would help much, but it does.

Taking a picture of your passport and having it in your email is a great idea! You could also take a picture of it and keep it in your phone. Also, I keep a photocopy of my passport on me and present that. Especially in Mexico the policia will keep your passport and extort you to pay to get it back.

Professor mark, one time in Frankfort I almost missed my next plane because of customs. So after that I always scheduled flights with at least two and a half hours in between (if possible) for buffer time. Customs uses face- recognition software, they know exactly who you are as you're waiting in line long before you approach the counter. They already know everyone who to expect from the plane that's arriving.

Biggest fright I had with a passport was when I was staying with friends in NJ. Got into the habit of carrying it for IDing for buying drinks and put the trousers (pants) I was wearing the night before in the wash. That evening I am starting to get a panic on as I can't find the passport. It was in the wash. Surprisingly, it was not damaged. So I now have one of those waterproof plastic carry cases for it that you wear around your neck. Great for passport, tickets and money.

Sensible as always Mark. One point though, although pretty obvious, make sure you report any theft to the local police station. You'll need a reference number of some sort from them in order to make an insurance claim. Nor sure how it works for the U.S.A., but replacement British passports are expensive.

I found out the hard way that yes despite being a U.S. citizen (the flight attendant told me I didn’t) that I did need to fill out a customs form! When they hand those out get one and fill it out! Fortunately the customs officer was very very understanding & helped me fill it out thankfully I had been awake for 30 hours.

In some EU countries (France and Germany for example), you also have automated customs checkpoints for EU passport holders. It's basically sort of a box that scans your passport first, and then your face. If there's anything wrong, you'll be asked to an actual customs agent after going through, but it can still save you a lot of time.

One tip you missed Wolter was being enrolled in frequent traveller programs like Global Entry they save a ton of time if you travel a few times internationally. As a Canadian who has to travel thru the US from abroad, having it often means I can enter the US faster than most American citizens! And best of all there is no forms to fill out or apps to use. Simply stuff my passport in the machine answer two questions and hand a sheet off to the immigration officer. No 20 questions or waiting in line! A real time saver!

rztrzt the part about Schengen is not about your passport but rather about the origin and destination of your flight. If it is within the Schengen (depending on airport) your flight will be determined to be domestic and not international cutting down on hassle. But on the other side you can't use tax free then :-( however I understand your thought about it as on arrival there will not be passport checks the customs is just 2 corridors one with a mail box to declare in (if no staff) and the other just empty

If you fly from Barcelona to outside EU you will pass passport and custom check And BTW "Schengen passport" is term for passports EU country's

I fly from STL to Vancouver quite frequently. I leaned that going there since I tend to connect between home and Vancouver, no need to worry about time when going through customs when arriving because I'll clear customs in Vancouver. But when I return I make sure my connecting flight has an hour plus between since I got to clear customs where my layover is.

My best vacation affordability hack is to book your departing flight separate from the return. It doesn't necessarily make the total trip cheaper, but it lowers the cost you'll pay at that particular moment. For example, I purchased my departing flight out of one paycheck for $350 to Germany from ORD on aer lingus. The next paycheck I'll buy the return for $450. Then the next paycheck Ill book the room. Then I'll save a bit out of the next 4 paychecks for transportation and pocket money. Instead of having to pay $1,580 all at once. Just be sure to allow yourself time to get to your connections between bookings.

US citizen: I’m sure someone else has mentioned this already but I went out to Amazon UK and purchased a curling/flat iron & surge protector that is good for most European countries & China. Instead of traveling with all the toiletries I will need for the duration of my trip, I purchase what I need in the country I’m visiting & pick up an extension cord at the local dollar store. You would be surprised how many countries have a dollar store. When my trip is over, I trash the toiletries. One other thing, never ever ever use a surge protector on a cruise ship! The cruise line will confiscate a surge protector. Only take an extension cord.

If you live near the Canadian Border, NEXUS card is a better option then Global Entry. NEXUS requires an interview and the interview centres are generally at USA/Canada border crossings or the larger Canadian airports. The reason I say it's a better option is that it's $50 for 5 years (not $100 for 5 years) and children under 18 are free. Plus, once enrolled, you get a trusted traveler number, which works on Global Entry and TSA pre-check lines. (also, dedicated NEXUS lanes if traveling to Canada/USA via road; there are benefits for using NEXUS on water, but I'm not a boater). For Canadians applying, it's $50 USD to do it online, but if you apply to an Canadian Enrollment centre via snail mail, it's $50 CAD. True story We got back from the Caribbean last month into Toronto Pearson Terminal 3 (about 1500hrs on a Tuesday---I don't know if flight patterns or days make a difference). Our plane landed about the same time as 2 other planes. Once we deplaned, there was about 300 people in front of us waiting to use the self declaration kiosk on the right hand side of the hallway and on the left hand side that was roped off, there was an official looking lady saying "NEXUS holders to the left, everyone else to the right". We bypassed the 300 people and went straight downstairs to the Customs area. When we got down there, there had to be 500+ people queued up waiting to talk to a CBSA agent. There was a roped off area for special services and about 15 red kiosks for NEXUS, three which were empty. Flash the NEXUS card to the official standing watch at that checkpoint and zipped right through to the machines. 2 minutes later (first time using the machine and we had to process the kids also), we as a family proceeded to the "Special Services/Air Crew/Nexus" CBSA agents. There were 3 of them and us being a line of 4--the dozen or so people who were in front of us at the kiosks were long gone when we walked up to the agents. If our luggage wasn't delayed (our flight landed 20 minutes early) and we only had carry on luggage, I bet we could of cleared the airport in 10-15 minutes from de-boarding to standing outside waiting for a shuttle.

In the UK you WILL normally get through "customs" quickly, you just walk through and are unlikely to be stopped. (Same in the EU.) As for immigration, last time, it was a remarkably short queue at Schiphol, like a few minutes (maybe I was lucky) and back at Cardiff I could use the e-gate and could basically go straight through. I had a tight connection at Cardiff Airport too, which I missed (i.e. I missed the bus to Rhoose), but could get a taxi to Barry and get the train from there.

Fly non US airlines, especially from Asia. Recently flew r/t to Beijing on Hainan and there were only 6-7 Americans on a packed 787 each way. Took 15 minutes in Beijing and 7 minutes in Chicago to get through customs. Most folks seem to only fly their home country’s airlines. Makes it pretty easy at times. JFK not withstanding!

Hainan is a dream. As is Hong Kong Airlines. Amazing service. Wonderful meals. Bring your own headphones though. Never have had luck with either of theirs.

If you have a US or Canadian passport, and you're entering the US: download Mobile Passport and complete it in advance, then submit it when you're about to go through immigration and customs. You'll "breeze" through compared to other travelers.

Going through customs is always extremely quick - you just go through the red lane if you have goods to declare or the green one if you don't, or the blue one for travel within the EU. Going through passport control is where it can get slow. Of course as well as countries having a separate lane for their own citizens (or EU/EEA/Swiss citizens in the EU), many also have electronic gates that are for citizens of their own country, but also select other countries (the ones in the UK accept, UK, EU, EEA, Swiss, US, Australian, New Zealand, Canadian, Japanese and South Korean passports, or other countries if you're a registered traveller). Those are always going to be much quicker than waiting in a long, snaking queue

I actually have gotten through customs quickly. Not sure why but while traveling alone with my baby in LAX I got mistaken for a celebrity and they literally cut me past hundreds of people. I felt kind of bad actually, but it was pretty momentary feeling that was replaced by relief. 😂

If you fly to Ireland, fly into Shannon. US Customs was less than 3 minutes, including waiting in "line."

I had foot trouble from gout on my last time in the U.K. so at Gatwick I asked for a wheelchair- security was a breeze! the lady rolled me right up to the gate.

one way I've been put to the front of the line (or in the line for diplomats and flight crews) is when I'm traveling with my father, who's in a wheelchair. Nowadays I always request airport assistance as having airport staff with you greatly speeds up that process (customs, passport check, TSA check, both departing and arriving). Although I'd rather just stand in line with my father and that he didn't need a wheelchair, those few benefits I'll take.

With global entry, the only time I stop is to do the passport scan and fingerprint thing. Otherwise I keep moving. Very fast process.

As an eu citizen travelling to toronto a few times now the second time i did it i was automatically referred to the machines that scan passports not through the customs where the officers are. Everything went fine until crossing the border back from a trip to the US where they couldnt find the stamp of entry (i didnt have one except a year prior) so it looked like i stayed in canada illegaly for almost a year. Thankfully this happens to be a common mistake so they believed me that airport staff messed up. But scary anyway. Make sure to ask many people at the airport lol (i asked 3 and they still sent me to the machines)

Thanks for the help I've been binge watching your videos as it's my first time flying in December and I'm flying to Germany from Australia and you mentioned that 1 hour between flights I could miss my flight because of customs and each of my flights it's about an hour till the next flight from when I land, will this really be an issue? :(

Hey there! I recently look a 'long haul' flight UK to the USA, it was the first 10+hour flight for me and I struggled. Would you be able to make a video on how to prepare for long haul flights and what to do to make it as comfy as possible? Thanks, great video as always!

Hey Wolter👋. I want to travel this summer from US to Greece. Do you know if I can take with me in the airplane my iPad or a portable usb battery? Thanks for the tips in this video👍
@spydude38
@spydude38 5 лет назад
iPad, yes. Portable USB charger, check the specific airline's website that you are flying for their battery size restrictions. TSA website in the U.S. has information as well. Most airlines allow you take a battery charger up to a specific capacity limit. You can't put any lithium ion batteries in your checked luggage. You must take with you as carry-on.

@ronikarlsson1546
@ronikarlsson1546 6 лет назад
I would like to add a few more things: When coming to customs and/or passport control, have your travel documents ready (passport, visa or residence permit). It'll take everyone's time, if you have to go through your carry-on just to find your passport. (This should go without saying.) Find out beforehand, what documents you need and what you need to declare for customs before the trip. If you lose your passport, in addition to contacting your consulate/embassy, contact the local police, so they can report it stolen/lost. This will help prevent Identity theft and misuse of the document. I hope this is helpful for you folks! P.S. Use automated border control if you are eligible for it.

When do you go to US Customs? Before you leave your flight or after you get to your destination? I am thinking about going to Bali and one of my flights lands in South Korea. Do I go through Customs there? I'm really confused lol.
