In the Middle Ages, the material from the remains of the Ancient Fortress was used for the construction of the Medieval Fortress. In the 18th century, the remains of the Medieval fortress were used to build the citadel's artillery. There are only foundations underground of the Ancient Fortress.

The answer to your question. The fortress is where you entered. The rest has probably disappeaed over the centuries of conflict.

There is a fortress. 😊The entrance- consists of main gate, front wall and represents fortress itself. 😊 All n all... thats whats left of the fortress, but still worth of atention. 👍 Along with an ambient inside the park.

Here they are, out in the open, with no security. In the US they would be inside a building with heavy security.

Well, Naisus Castrum is probably built between I and II century, and Niš (Naisus) is probably the most famous as birthplace of Constanie The Grreat, but the fortress, and city inside, had no luck at all during history. You might say that dirt you are walking upon there is made 95% of human bones. For 2 mileniums it was totally destroyed and rebuild again multiple times. Only during Roman period, it was destroyed 6 times (recorded), twice to the ground (first time by Huns in 441, second time by Slavs in 615). Next 500 years for Niš (or Naisus) warrred Austrohungarians, Bulgarians, Byzanthine and Serbs. For instance, there is a record that Byzanthine Emperor Manojlo I Komin rebuilt fortress in 1165, making it again byzanthine fortification,(but that only means he previosly destroyed it in war, taking it from someone), and Serbian Grand Prince Stephan Nemanja retook it 1183 by detroying it to the foundation... He also completetly rebuilt it again in 1186. Then Byzanthine Empire took it again from him in 1189 (probably by compeltelly destroying fortress again)... I guess you can imagine on this 25 year sample how it looked for 2 milleniums. The final today look to fortress gave Ottomans from 1719. to 1728, making so called land dome fortress (artificial hill called Hisar) that is protected by walls, trenches and 7 bastions. It was triangle shaped, had 3 gates, 3 mosques and for sure 2 mahalas (civilian quarters inside). But making artificial landhill meant that they poored earth upon any survived previouse remains, while most of available stones and bricks they used for walls. That is why mediavel remains are very scarce (Ottomans probably demolished everything for construction materials), but there is still layer of very early Roman period, because it was probably also previously burried under land during medieval times. Well, that Ottoman fortified city had maybe the longest life, enduring to the 1878, when Turks finally withdrew from Niš. Then came WW i, WW II, and every occupying force used fortress for millitary purposes. Although slowly and inevitabely christianizied back after Turks left, final blow for Niš Fortress made Allies in WW II, when they bomb Nazies stationed there. After that, the buildings you see is what remained of XVIII century Ottoman city: 2 gates, walls, a moscque and only few other original buildings... P. S. But Naisus Castrum from its Roman time until 1950. served almost exclusevly as millitary post. The true jewel of Niš's archeology is actually Mediana, the settlement of luxuriouse palace-city outside the fortress. Because Nais was birthplace of Constantine the Great, it was so called exlusive location for all "rich and powerfull" to build their palaces. His descendants recordedly lived there also. But there you can enter only with organizied group and it is not free...
