Another Great Video Josh! I learned things from your vlog, and now would like to go to Netherlands myself one day. The single MOST SURPRISING thing I learned was why there was two names for this country. I grew up knowing it as Holland, but also being referred to as The Netherlands. Nobody ever explained why... until you did in this video. Thank you Josh, as always a great video, especially with the voice-overs. Always watch all your videos from beginning to end. Nice work Josh! Regarding the body of water named IJ. The combination ‘IJ’ is actually considered a single vowel in the dutch alphabet which is roughly pronounced as the English words ‘eye’ and ‘I’. Because it is a single letter, both parts of the glyph are capitalized at the beginning of a sentence or on a map. Like in the case of the topographical names ‘IJmuiden’, ‘ IJssel’ and indeed ‘ IJ’. Secondly: the IJ is not a river, but a former bay. Nowadays it connects with the North Sea in the west via the man-made ‘Noordzeekanaal’, but until 1876, the IJ was a bay of the then ‘Zuyderzee’. A former sea which became a lake after being isolated from the Wadden Sea after the construction of a 30 km dam in 1932.
Thanks for the video Josh. We have been a couple of times. I wouldn't rank the Vondelpark in my top 30. It was tired, had dog doo, quite a few folks under the influence of something. Bicycle pedestrian accidents. But the Rijksmuseum was superb. Thing to do, is go to Brouerij 't IJ. Great beer in a windmill. Zaans Schans is another highlight. Just do the walk and avoid the tourist crush in the cheese shop. You didn't mention The Goldfinch painting in the Mauritshuis. Painted in 1654! They could make a movie about the real painting, the fictional movie of the name does not get great reviews. In Delft we found phone boxes converted into mini art galleries. The Oude Kerk, built 1246 appears to lean to one side, because it does. We'll probably be back again next year.
Thanks for the tips. Interesting regarding our opposing experiences at Vondelpark. As you can see from my video clips, it was clean and nice when I went there. We also saw the Goldfinch painting. We even bought a replica because we liked it so much. Our canal guide in Delft pointed out the leaning Oude Kerk. (None of the above made it into my video simply because of time constraints but overall a great trip.) Sounds like you will be returning. I hope to soon as well.
