Renting a villa is a great way to live like a local and can have extended stays for cheaper than hotels.

This spot was located in the Casitas, that is the few streets between the port areas called Costa Maya and the beachfront part of the town of Mahahual.

Just a 5 minutes' walk to the port area or 5 minutes' walk to the beachfront area with the Hotels, shops, bars, restaurants, dive shop, and the snorkeling ... the snorkeling with the turtles.

One of the recommended spots for a beach break is "The Chunky Monkey Beach Club", located at the southernmost part of the hotel & beach area. I love it because it is away from the busy tourist spots, secluded, charming and authentic. Owned by Mike from Arizona, but being managed locally by Fernando, his wife and his son, who all work here. She is from El Salvador and taught them all how to grill the seafood that they boys catch while diving and spearfishing.
